How To Fix the Jobs Problem
by Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr.

All this talk of unemployment is preposterous. Think of it. We live in a world with lots of imperfections, things that need to be done. It has always been so and always will be so. That means that there is work to be done, and therefore, always jobs. The problem of unemployment is a problem of disconnect between those who would work and those who would hire.

What is the disconnect? It comes down to affordability. Businesses right now can't afford to hire new workers. They keep letting them go. Therefore, unemployment is high, in the double-digits, approaching 17% or more. Among black men, it is 25%. Among youth, it is 30% or higher. And the problem is spreading and will continue to spread so long as there are barriers to deal-making between hirers and workers.

Again, it is not a lack of work to be done. It is too expensive to pay for the work to be done. So ask yourself, what are those things that prevent deals from being made?

Let me list a few barriers:

    * The high minimum wage that knocks out the first several rungs from the bottom of the ladder;
    * The high payroll tax that robs employees and employers of resources;
    * The laws that threaten firms with lawsuits should the employee be fired;
    * The laws that established myriad conditions for hiring beyond the market-based condition that matters: can he or she get the job done?;
    * The unemployment subsidy in the form of phony insurance that pays people not to work;
    * The high cost of business start-ups in the form of taxes and mandates;
    * The mandated benefits that employers are forced to cough up for every new employee under certain conditions;
    * The withholding tax that prevents employers and employees from making their own deals;
    * The age restrictions that treat everyone under the age of 16 as useless;
    * The social security and income taxes that together devour nearly half of contract income;
    * The labor union laws that permit thugs to loot a firm and keep out workers who would love a chance to offer their wares for less.

Now, that's just a few of the interventions. But if they were eliminated today, and it would only take one act of Congress to do so, the unemployment rate would collapse very quickly. Everyone who wanted a job would get one.

Depending on the credibility of the new approach, businesses would begin hiring immediately. It would be a spectacular thing to behold. However, the new approach would have to be certain and not something to be reversed in a couple of months. No one wants to invest in employees only to have their investment taken away. So there could be no expiration date on the new laissez-faire approach.

A lot of half truths and half bricks. He doesn't mention Wall Street and the influence of stock holders, nor does he mention self employed. Even with the self employed, some have more assigned" value" than others and make more money. "The cobbler's children have no shoes" was true. In some cultures people who fish don't eat them themselves, because they can make more money by selling them and buying cheaper but less nourishing (low protein) food for themselves. There has always been the working poor class. But I guess he doesn't count "under employed" as unemployed. People always have the chance for self employment. They can't say the boss exploited them. They are on their own. They buy their own insurance and if they ever retire, they live on what they saved, invested,+ S.S.

It's a good article.  Isn't everybody self-employed?

He has made a good list of barriers and those barriers
ought to be removed for the working folks.

I don't understand your question.

Good article, Red.  The barriers do need to be eliminated but, under Bo, it will never happen.  Now Obama wants to print another 100 billion so he can play the piped piper of Government and create more jobs.... hmmmm...but won't that necessitate another tax hike to pay for those NEW jobs?  This CLOWN is so far out of touch with reality its actually frightening.  If someone asked me to choreograph the destruction of an economy, I could not do it any better than Obama and his pack of political thieves.

If congress wants to do something for the tax payer and indeed for the country instead of for themselves for a change then get them to enact this:  Proposed 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution - "Congress shall make no law that applies to any citizen of the United States that does not apply equally to all US Senators and Representatives, and Congress shall make no law that applies to any US Senator or Representative that does not apply equally to all citizens of the United States.  All existing laws and regulations that do not meet these criteria shall be declared null and void!"

It is truly amazing how this sob has been able to get away with his crap.  And what is even more amazing is that 49.5% of this country (mostly democrats) is willing to go along with him and think he's doing a great job.  I guess the song of the day is Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man" for the democrats as Gallup, the polling organization, found that 88 percent of democrats approve of the president at the one-year mark, but just 23 percent of Republicans approve — the largest partisan gap they've ever recorded at this point in a presidency.

And Diane... as a left-leaning independent, you are probably somewhere within that 49.5%.  How does that make you feel?  Think Bo is doing a superior job?  Even Biden's son Beau saw the writing on the wall.  You are about to get a new republican Senator for the state of DE so get ready to say goodbye to Ted and hello to Mikey.  Don't you know by now that everything Obama touches turns to shit!  Both democrats and republicans have taken notice of Obama's INABILITY to help pull fellow democrats over the finish line in political campaigns.

Alright Mr. Smart Alec.  Mike Castle is very well thought of here and I'll be voting for him myself. You can take your remarks about me and shove 'em.  :P

LOL...Tsk...Tsk.. now is that anyway for a lady to talk.  Since you do lean to the left are you thinking that Castle is a RINO and very moderate in his conservative views and will probably hurt the Republican Party more than help it so I'll vote for him?  You do know that when he was Governor, some people complained that it was hard to tell if he was a Republican or democrat.  Is that what you are hoping for Diane??  HUH ???

Go find somebody else to play with. I know all about Mike. Know him personally too. You won't get a rise out of me.
