from Day by Day with the Persecuted Church,

The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated? (1 Corinthians 6:7)

Pastor Zhu's wife

Quarrels among believers are never good. Lawsuits among believers are even worse. When there is a conflict among believers, they should talk it over in the love of the Lord - with a humble and forgiving heart.

Do not wait and grumble against each other. It only gives the devil a chance to intervene. "Completely defeated" means "failure."

Jesus teaches us that victory is not the emphasis of personal innocence and fairness, but peace and humility among the Body of Christ (Matthew 5:39,40).

We Christians in China often find ourselves in a situation where we have to appear in court. We are ill-treated, put in prison without cause; nobody defends our rights.

We have every "right" to complain. But it will not be to our advantage. We will only suffer more and lose our peace in the Lord.

If we are learning not to react in a worldly way against unbelievers, how much more should the mind of Christ dwell in us when we disagree with fellow Christians? "Make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose ... in humility consider others better than yourselves ... your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus" (Philippians 2:2-5).

"Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and then remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother, then come and offer your gift" (Matthew 5:23,24).

Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation. (1 Peter 2:2)

Li An

The Word of God nourishes us and meets the needs of our spiritual life. It generates in our hearts, causing us to grow gradually. Modern man prefers to listen to new and trendy teaching. It works temporarily as it is new and soothing to the ears. But it does not last.

"All men are like grass and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands for ever" (1 Peter 1:24,25).

This is the pure spiritual milk which causes us to grow up in our salvation.

"I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word" (Psalm 119:14-16).

"The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple" (Psalm 119:130).

"How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter that honey to my mouth. I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path" (Psalm 119:103-105).

(This meditation was edited from the booklet Morning Light compiled by Jonathan Chao, Chinese Research Centre.)

from Day by Day with the Persecuted Church,

David is very, very sad. His best friends have left him, or even worse, they have turned against him. David is suffering from this, spiritually, emotionally and physically. He can deal with the fact that his real enemies are against him, but to be considered an enemy by his friends hurts deeply, very deeply.

David

O God, whom I praise, do not remain silent,
for wicked and deceitful men have opened their mouths against me; they have spoken against me with lying tongues.
With words of hatred they surround me; they attack me without cause.
In return for my friendship they accuse me, but I am a man of prayer.
They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my friendship.
With my mouth I will greatly extol the Lord; in the great throng I will praise him.
For he stands at the right hand of the needy one, to save his life from those who condemn him.
(Psalm 109:1-5,30-31)

Day by Day with the Persecuted Church,

If you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed ... in your hearts set apart Christ as your Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience. (1 Peter 3:14-16)

Oswaldo Magdangal

Every testimony of struggle and victory contains a danger. After all, the person in question can be made the center of attention so much so that not Christ, but a man or woman is glorified. When you read about victories in the coming week, you must not think: how strong this man's faith was!

When you read about his pain, you must not think how he suffered!

Brother Wally himself said the following, "My testimony is not even my testimony, really, but the story of the Lord Jesus Christ in my life. Every Christian has a story to tell and it is always the story of Jesus. That is the most wonderful thing about being a Christian - we have a common story to tell, the story of what Jesus Christ did in our lives. I thank God that a Christian's life is the best life conceivable. Everything else pales into insignificance beside the privilege of being called a child of God."

So let our life and suffering, our struggle and our victory, our words and silence always glorify His holy Name. "Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name be glory" (Psalm 115:1).

Day by Day with the Persecuted Church,

For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered ... I am convinced that neither death nor life will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:36-39)

Oswaldo Magdangal

Saudi Arabia is the cradle of Islam. Every Saudi who becomes a Christian can be sentenced to death for it. Christians can only meet in total secrecy, and building Christian churches is strictly forbidden.

As the Saudi Arabian Minister of Information, Ali Ben Hassan ash-Shair said in an interview with the French paper Le Figaro in August 1992, "The Saudi government cannot allow any churches on its territory because it is Allah's command."

Brother Wally comes from the Philippines and he had been working in Saudi Arabia for more than ten years, when he was imprisoned and sentenced to death.

In Saudi Arabia, the death penalty can be executed in two ways - decapitation or hanging. Decapitation is for criminals, murderers, drug dealers etc. Hanging is reserved for blasphemy and subversive activities. Brother Wally was sentenced to death by hanging - because of his testimony that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Islam considers this blasphemy, which deserves the most dreadful way to die - hanging. Brother Wally wrote, "Although we had prepared ourselves for suffering and the Lord had also prepared us spiritually, it is quite different when it happens to you personally. In the middle of my struggle in a dirty little death cell, the Lord encouraged me with the following words, 'My son, I have seen everything. I assure you that I will not leave you or forsake you.' The Lord is close to the brokenhearted. In the deepest darkness, He is the light. God gives strength in suffering - always, everywhere."

from Day by Day with the Persecuted Church,

This poor man called and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him and he delivers them. (Psalm 34:6-7)

Oswaldo Magdangal

The religious police in Saudi Arabia, the so-called "Mutawa", interrogated and mistreated Brother Wally for many days. He was beaten in the face, punched and kicked. The flogging, on the back, palms of the hands and soles of the feet were the worst.

"In the midst of the flogging, the Lord stood beside me," Brother Wally testified. The torture lasted for two hundred and ten minutes - without interruption.

Later, Brother Wally said the following about it, "Boxers fight for twelve rounds at the most. Every round lasts three minutes, after which they get one minute of rest. They are massaged, they get something to drink, the wounds are tended to and everything else is done to get them to box for another three minutes. So they are in action for thirty-six minutes at most and they have about twelve minutes of rest. I was beaten and flogged for two hundred and ten minutes on end. But glory to God, after two hundred and ten minutes they came to an end because - they themselves were tired. I was still standing straight. No knock-out. God had supported me all the time. It was a miracle. The Lord was very close to me."

This is no theory, but practice. These are not pretty words about how God can help, but a testimony of strength in spite of suffering. The Lord allows suffering - sometimes even death - but, "I will be with him in trouble" (Psalm 91:15).

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. (Psalm 91:11-12)

Oswaldo Magdangal

In Saudi Arabia, when they flog you, the most painful lashes are those given under the feet. After the flogging, they force you to stand up, but because of the pain in the feet it is impossible to do so. When Brother Wally had undergone this torture, the pain was unbearable. He said, "I began to feel sorry for myself and begged the police not to make me stand up. I was down on my knees before them, for I could not stand up." But the police forced him, although it was impossible.

Brother Wally, "Suddenly I recalled Psalm 91 verses 11 and 12, just like that, in the midst of all this pain. It was the Holy Spirit who reminded me of these words. "For he will command his angels concerning you ... they will lift you up in their hands..." And that was exactly what the Lord did for me. I was able to stand up, hands and feet chained - but I didn't feel any pain. The police were flabbergasted. How could someone who just begged them to let him lie down be able to stand up all of a sudden? Angels had lifted me up in their hands. They could not see them, but I felt they were there. They were carrying me.

"Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens" (Psalm 68:19).

from Day by Day with the Persecuted Church,

If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.
(Romans 14:8)

Oswaldo Magdangal

It was the seventieth day of his captivity. The next day, he would be hanged. Brother Wally wrote a farewell letter to his wife and after that he prayed together with a fellow-prisoner. They recalled Paul and Silas, who praised the Lord in prison, after which the Lord made the walls of the prison shake.

They started to pray, too, from ten o'clock in the evening until eleven, but there was no shaking. Brother Wally looked at the bars and said, "Lord, if we are hanged, we will be with You. It is always the story of Jesus Christ. If we are set free, You will still be with us - it's still the story of Jesus. So there is no room for Satan, no room for a defeat. Whether we are hanged or released, it is Your victory, Lord. If we are hanged, another chapter will be added to Acts - two more martyrs like Stephen. If we are released, it will be Acts 29, for then the Gospel will be spread even further.

At a quarter past eleven, a high ranking police officer came in. Half an hour later we were released and I was put on a plane to Manila. I was free! On 25 December, Christmas Day, at eleven o'clock in the morning, we arrived in Manila."

"If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord."

We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us ... Be reconciled to God.
(2 Corinthians 5:20)

Oswaldo Magdangal

Every Christian is an ambassador. We represent God by presenting Jesus Christ as Savior of the world. Every Christian has a story to tell. The greatest story that this world has ever heard is the story of the coming of Jesus Christ, to save a dying world. We are Christ's ambassadors in proclaiming that great story. The second greatest story this world can ever hear is still the story of Jesus - in the lives of Christians like you and me.

Let us not hold back that story - the Jesus story, but tell the world. Proclaim the greatest news - in words and deeds, without counting the cost.

"They overcame him by the power of the Lamb, and by the word of His testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death" (Revelation 12:16).

What a challenge.

What a responsibility.

What a privilege.

The Lord is my light and my salvation,
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life- of whom shall I be afraid?
(Psalm 27:1)

For in the day of trouble,
He will keep me safe in His dwelling;
He will hide me in the shelter of His tabernacle...

Comments of a Chinese pastor who has spent 22 years in prison for his faith-

"If there's no struggle, there will be no strength.
If there's no cross, there will be no crown.
There is no way we can follow Christ without a cross. Let us cherish it and cling to it."

If a man in the free world would have spoken these words, one could have laughed at such theatrical statements. But now that a Chinese brother speaks from experience - 22 long years of imprisonment, torture, and hard labor - we should listen carefully.

When asked what sustained him in prison he replied: Psalm 27 and the song "The Old Rugged Cross." "Let us cherish it and cling to it." Today and every day.
