Dumbing down at the Naval Academy - by Walter Williams

Diversity at the Naval Academy, as at most academic institutions, is not about equal opportunity but a race and sex spoils system to achieve what the Navy brass see as a pleasing race and sex mix.

This is reflective of what's happening in businesses around the country.  You can no longer hire the smartest person for the job or the most qualified... you have to satisfy the race and sex requirements that the gov't has put on you.  I'd rather be not hired for a position because I wasn't the most qualified, rather than being hired only because I'm a woman.  And we wonder why productivity of our country has decreased?

Actually productivity has increased, feel free to verify with the various economic reports on productivity that are released by the BLS every month.

Thank you Jerry for that clarification.  I guess I was meaning productivity as a non-reportable aspect... like why all our jobs are going overseas.
Bottom line is that just because you're qualified for the position, doesn't mean you're going to get it if that company needs to show they are an equal opportunity employer.  Unfortunately, like in the original post of this topic, it's apparently bleeding over to the Naval Academy and other schools, as well.

Tobino, I am just teasing you. "You guess you mean...?" If you are not sure what you are saying how are we supposed to know? Just teasing.

Now my serious comments:

The productivity of the US worker has never been higher.
The rate at which our productivity is growing has decreased.
Our jobs going overseas is bad, but maybe we need to concentrate on what our new economy will be not what we used to do.
America has always been very good at being a leader when it comes to economies and innovation.

It's been shown in study after study, as well as real world examples, that diversity increases performance on an organizational level.  Out here in california, many companies don't really have to try to meet guidelines.

I'm not sure why these posts about workplace diversity are popping up on the threads recently.  There are no quotas, there is no law that says you must hire x number of minorities.  The law says don't discriminate on something that isn't related to the job.  That means you can require a firefighter be able to lift a certain amount of weight.  You can require an athlete to be proficient at his sport before you hire him.

In another thread, it was argued that anti-discriminatory laws are too intrusive.  For the majority of our nations history, we went without them, and it didn't work out very well.  Ever since the laws have been put into place, efficiency, productivity etc has been increasing.  Yes i realize it's not just diversity in the workplace, but anti-discrimination laws are definatly a factor.  Thats an undisputable fact.

Oh, there are many undisputable facts...Not the least of which is the fact that I'm <yawn> leaving this all to you and going to soak in a hot tub...<stretching...flexing the claws>.  I'm tired of undisputable facts.  Besides which...This topic is rather passe', wouldn't you agree?  The efforts to correct how people are treated didn't end with the Emancipation Proclamation.  I'm a little surprised that this post is on here, to be honest...Although, maybe the news that our national institutions employ 'quotas' is just hitting that region of the country...Could it be that Kansas was indeed that far ahead of the curve on that one? lol

.....except on rare occasions when a judge orders a quota on a company that has been found guilty of extreme or blatant discrimination in employment.  ;)

Uh-hum...I know...Quotas are indeed illegal...and proving that a workplace (or a law officer, at the end of the month) doesn't use quotas is next to impossible.  So,  >:( all you like!
