OSHEL, Rosetta Belle - b. October 14, 1921 - d. April 24, 2009

Rosetta Belle Oshel, age 75, a resident of Fredonia, Kansas, passed away Friday, April 24, 2009 at Golden Living in Fredonia.  She was born on October 14, 1921 in Burlington, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph and Helen (Layton) Wilson.  Her mother died when she was still an infant, and she was raised by her maternal aunt and uncle John and Rachel Moody.

Rosetta was united in marriage to Hubert "Red" Oshel on June 5, 1937, in Fort Scott, Kansas, and although she said she was 18, she was really only 15.  Rosetta always had extra kids at the house; some for a few hours and at least one for a few months. While the kids were in school, she would work outside the home.  She cooked at cafes, schools, and hospitals.  She would bake pies, bread, and other things she sold.  At times, she would do laundry and various other odd jobs to bring in extra money.  She also baked goods for the children's bake sales.  Although her husband worked pipeline and other jobs that kept them moving all over, she always managed to make it back to Kansas for the children to be born.  Rosetta liked to make quilts and clothing for the family.  If she had a pattern, she could follow it.  She even had a pattern for her children:  3 girls, 1 boy, 3 girls, 1 boy.  After living in Wann, Oklahoma with the younger children for 10 years, they moved to Cedar Vale, Kansas.

She is survived by her two sons, Wallace "Smokie" Oshel of Silbee, Texas and Jessie James Oshel of Corpus Christi, Texas; five daughters, Mary Squires of Fredonia, Kansas, Patricia Lamb of Sedan, Kansas, Hellen Sallee of Weir, Kansas, Jo Ellen of Moline, Kansas, and Rebecca Braden of Gonzales, Texas; 38 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchidlren, and 10 great-great grandchildren.

Rosetta was preceded in death by her husband, parents, aunt and uncle, a brother, a sister, her oldest child, 4 sons-in-law, 1 daughter-in-law, 1 grandchild, and 1 great-grandchild.

Graveside serviceswill be hel at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at Cedar Vale Cemetery with Pastor Stan Rumbaugh officiating.  Visitation will be 30 minutes prior to service time at the graveside.  Memorials are suggested to the Amercan Cancer Society and may be left in care of the funeral home.  Online condolences may be left for the family at www.countrysidefh.com.  Arrangements are under the direction of Countryside Funeral Home, P.O.
