Robert Dee Wade, 83, of Winfield, Kansas, died February 16, 2009 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita, Kansas.  Robert was born October 28, 1925 in Cambridge, Kansas to Drayphus Dewey and Cora (Hawley) Wade.  He was raised and educated in the Cambridge area, graduating from Cambridge High School in 1943.

After graduation, Robert served in the United States Navy.  He was a World War II veteran assigned to the USS Dickens (APA161), an attack transport ship that served in the South Pacific.  His duties aboard the USS Dickens was that of radio operator.  On February 19. 1945, the USS Dickens made the initial assault landing at Iwo Jima.  The ship was also present for the Tokyo Bay Surrender Ceremony on September 2, 1945.  The USS Dickens was the recipient of two battle stars for World War II services.

On October 28, 1946, Robert married Norma Jean Bailin.  He worked 30 plus years at the Winfield State Hospital & Training Center where he was the chief engineer.  He retired from WSHTC in 1991 and returned to farming, one of his many hobbies.  Other hobbies included fishing and hunting.  Throughout his life, he was active in both the Grenola and Winfield Christian churches where he served as a Sunday School teacher and deacon.

Robert is survived by his wife, Norma Wade, of the home; a son, Henry Wade of Winfield, Kansas; two daughters, Karen Morrell and husband Dale of Maize, Kansas and Marilyn Jones and husband Steve of El Dorado, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Daylene Morrell, Bryan Morrell, Sharon Leister, Brodie Jones, Shane Wade, Jason Keith, and Levi Wade; and three great-grandchildren.  A host of family and friends are also among those honoring his memory.  

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on February 20, 2009 at the Grenola Christian Church, Grenola, Kansas.  Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Grenola.  Arrangements are by Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home of Winfield, Kansas.  Visitation will be from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 19 at the funeral home with the family greeting friends from 6:00 to 7:30.

Services were held for Robert D. "Bob" Wade at 1:30 p.m. February 20 in the Grenola Christian Church.  The Rev. Wallace Wartick officiated.  Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Speakers were Tom Kessinger and Dwane Kessinger.  Pam Kessinger was the pianist.  Vocalists were Lynn Kelly and Curtis Keplinger.  Casket bearers were Bryan Morrell, Gary Leister II, Brodie Jones, Shane Wade, Jason Keith, and Armand Hillier

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home of Winfield, Kansas was in charge of arrangements.
