Grade School News from 1955

Kindergarten

There are 28 enrolled in Kindergarten this year.  They are:  Rosalie Barger, Elaine Baumgartel, Joyce Beaumont, Sandy Boone, Tommie Carter, Malinda Cranford, Carla May Criger, Karen Fay DeWitt, Loren Drake, Loretta Sue Fear, Linda Faye Gragg, Bobby Hebb, Karen Ingle, Terry Lanning, Susan Leonard, Larry Light, Kathy Marion, Michael McClure, Vicki Miller, Gary Montgomery, Doug Moore, Dennis Northam, Johnnie Parsons, Eugene Perkins, Linda Reid, Teresa Thompson, Ian Veach and Robert Louis Vinette.

Michael McClure has been absent this week because he has undergone an operation.  We made "get well" cards for him Tuesday and we hope he well soon be well and back in school.

Gary Montgomery had a birthday Thursday, September 29th.  He treated us with candy bars.  Mrs. Montgomery and Dale brought the treats and visited us for the party.

We have seen two films this week, "Stupid Carelessness, The Fire Clown" and "Why Young America Paints."  We enjoyed the "Fire Clown" film very much and it gave us helpful information about fire safety: The other picture gave us some suggestions on painting.

First Grade

We have eight girls in our class.  They are: Janet Cookson, Becky Durbin, Teresa Gorman, Janis Harrod, Karen Hebb, Linda Hobson, Rita Juaire, and Delores Shipman.

We also have ten boys.  They are: Larry Craig, Jim Crisp, Allen Hammer, Hal Harrod, Tim Harrod, Randy Highsmith, Rodney Indermill, Dwight Lauffer, Danny Parker, and Jimmie Wiseman.

On Tuesday, Allen Hammer treated the class with candy bars and bubble gum.  Allen was six years old.

In reading readiness we are using "Getting Ready" in the morning class and "Practice for Getting Ready" for the afternoon reading period.  We have had the sounds of "M" and 'C".

We have a bird, two goldfish and several snails.

Second Grade

We have 27 enrolled in our class, 16 boys and 11 girls.  The new class members are:  Janet Shipman, Eddie Drake, Lois Montgomery, Bill Kling, and Lyle Signer.

In art class we have cut out fall leaves and made a bunch of grapes.

We have an aquarium.  Trudy Gray brought us some snails, moss, and a castle for the fish.  John Snodderley brought us a frog one morning.

The children are enjoying the new reading series.

Perfect spelling lessions for the past four weeks were made by: Johnnie Baumgartel, Eddie Drake, Joe Hebb, Alan Roberts, John Snodderley, Ross Veach, Geneva Barnaby, Trudy Gray, Lois Montgomery, Janet Vinette, Stephen Miller, and Mary Lanning.

We have some very good new library books.  Mrs Gragg reads to us each day.

Third Grade

We have 24 pupils in our room and three new pupils.  They are Virginia Perkins, Carol Craig, and Irvina Osborn.

In science we are studying about aquariums.  We have collected fish, snails, and water plants for a balanced aquarium.

The birthdays that were celebrated were:  Pat Moore, September 13th, Randy Divine, September 20th, Carl Mullendore, September 29th,  The visitors were Mrs. Kenneth Craig and children, Mrs. John West and Pamela, and Mrs. Noel Mullendore.

The perfect spelling lessons for September 30th were made by Joe Hamill, Willard Morris, Carl Mullendore, Paul Snodderley, Irvina Osborn, Virginia Perkins and Jeanne Vinette.

Fourth Grade

There are 17 girls and nine boys in the fourth grade.  Jean Sexton, Donald Cummings and Jack Kling are new pupils this year. We are glad to have them in our class.

Six girls and two boys had perfect spelling lessons this week.

Angela Hebb, Shirley Landwehr, Jo LaVelle Warren and Carl Ingle have had birthdays and treated the class since school started.

We are enjoying our new library.

Fifth Grade

We have two new pupils this year.  They are Mary Montgomery, and Trent (?) Von Behren.  Eight pupils made one hundred in spelling.

In social studies we had two films, "The Big Island" and "Alaska's Silver Millions."

In art we drew a picture about the skin and one of Alaska's flag.

Mary Montgomery's birthday was last Friday and she treated us to Milky Way candy bars.  Her mother and brother brought the treats and visited us.

Donna Barber was sick Wednesday.  Sue Perkins was absent three days.  By-Helen Bauder and Suzanne Crisp

Sixth Grade

The boys and girls who made one hundred in spelling were:  Maxine Cook, Shirley Hebb, Joyce Houser, Connie Landwehr, Ruth Montgomery and Mike Elliott.

Francis Juaire had a birthday the 31st of August and served candy bars.  We were very glad to have Mrs. Wanda Dilli visit that day.

We enjoyed two films, "An American Journey" and "Smokejumpers".

We are all making books in social studies on Latin America.

In music, several boys played their trumpets.  They played the introduction to "God of OUr Fathers" and "Taps".

Mrs. Staley is reading aloud "The Wheel On The School.:

In art we made designs on squared paper and on colored paper.

Some of the girls and boys are doing extra reading in order to improve.

Seventh Grade

Mr. Partin is our new seventh grade teacher.  There are 19 pupils, counting our new girl, Aleta Drake.

We saw several films, "Norway Safety" and "How Not To Conduct A Meeting."

Sixteen pupils made one hundred in spelling.  They are:  Elaine Kennedy, Nancy Barger, Aleta Drake, Glenda Beaumont, Sharon Miller, Geniveve Webster, Sue Miller, Patsy Roberts, Robert Dilli, Stephen Barnaby, Wayne Landwehr, Scott Perkins, Dale Pickell, Neighl Robertson, and Jimmie Smith.  -By- Nancy Barger and Elaine Kennedy.

Eighth Grade

We have three new students this year.  They are: Frances Drake, Ronnie Osborn, and _______(unreadable) Cummings.

In arithmetic, we are working on fractions.

We are all happy to have Mr. Schmidt for our teacher again this year.

We have organized our class this year with the following officers:  President, Weldon Harrod; vice president, Roberta Wilkes; secretary, Guida Lee Hammer; treasurer, Dorothy Garrett  By--Jon Burghart

I think it's really neat to take a glance backward, to see what we, as kids, were doing back then.  But it's starange.......I don't remember much about my early school days. 

It is interesting to note how much the educational system has changed thoroughout the years.

Hey! Speaking of obits........I've got them running out my ears.......it would take me several days to transcribe them.......and I wouldn't want to bore anyone.  As I look thru old newspapers, there seem to be several obits that were published every week, along with various marriages, etc.
