Fred Orwill Royse of Winfield, Kansas, 69, died Thursday, February 5, 2009 at the Kansas Veterans Home in Wichita, Kansas.  Fred was born September 17, 1939 in rural Longton, Kansas, the son of Hugh and Mary (Lewis) Royse.

Fred attended and graduated from Longton High School with the class of 1958.  He enlisted into the United States Army in January 1961 at Everett, Washington.  After basic training in California, he attended mechanical and electronic communication training.  Fred served in Korea, South Vietnam, and two terms in Germany.  He served in the U.S. Army for 16 years.  In his spare time, Fred liked to work with leather, making purses and other leather items.  He was an avid John Wayne movie collector and liked working with electronics.

Fred is survived by his daughter, Renee Castorena of Independence, Kansas; his mother, Mary S. Royse of Augusta, Kansas; four sisters, Susan Eppard and husband Jim of Augusta, Kansas, Alvena Spurrier of Boise, Idaho, Mary Lynn Howell of Wichita, Kansas, and Joyce Kelly of Neosho, Missouri; and 3 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson.  He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard, Kansas with Pastor Robin Haines officiating.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time with burial to follow at Grace Lawn Cemetery with Military Honors by Ft. Riley Honor Guard.
