Does anyone know the status of the Elk County Historical Society?

After a Flint Hills Express article in early 2005, I sent in $1.00 for membership and received a thank you but have not seen anything else concerning activities, membership, meetings, etc. since then.

Apparently, the Benson and other Howard musuems are not directly connected to the society. I know the society operates the Moline Shaeffer Musuem and published the county history book but other than that they seem to be a phamtom organization. Perhaps, they disbanded after Paul Boquim passed away?

Elk's sister Chautauqua really has a going historical society complete with their own building open several days a week, microfilm files, and other materials. They meet once per month and also send out a quarterly newsletter with historical stories, etc. However, they do charge $15 a year for membership.

I will try to check into this and let you know, as I have been wondering about whether they still had a historical society or not, as I have not heard anything about them for over a year.  Historical/genealogy information is rather scarce in Elk County.  That is the main reason for the obituary and genealogy boards on this forum.

If you will go to the genealogy board, under the heading:  Notice!!  Elk County Researchers  I hope you will fnd the answer to your question there.

Thanks,

Neva and I have talked before and she is quite helpful.

The Elk County Historical Society sponsors the Moline musuem and someone is opening the musuem on Wednesdays and Friday mornings through August. Maybe it is just someone doing it on their own but I am hoping to go through it on Wednesday.

If I understood correctly, it is the Moline museum that gets some money from the county.

I went through the Moline Musuem last Wednesay. A sign out front says Elk County Historical Society.  The lady in attendance said she was the vice president of the Moline Musuem but thought the Elk County Historical Society was in Howard. The latest Flint Hills Express has an item saying the Elk County Historical Society just this week received a $!,000 budget but included no other information. Where ever it is at or who ever is iin charge, they are getting county money. If someone ever finds out just where this organization is, please let me know.

The Elk County Historical Society is the one that takes care of the museum in Moline.  The Benson Museum at Howard has money from the Benson Estate.  That is not the Elk County Historical Society.  I do not know who is in charge of the Elk County Historical Society.  I will e-mail David Brace and see if he can answer that question or I'll e-mail the county clerk and she what she says.  The Benson Museum does not receive county money.  It is supported by the Benson Estate and other private donations.

I sent an Email to the county clerk and she replied back that David Brace is the person to contact for the Elk County Historical Society and provided an Email. Sent him an Email but it came back as unknown.

Anyone know David Brace?

Here's the e-mail that I have for David.  He is the retired Elk County Attorney and lives in Moline.

I hope it is still a valid e-mail.

Thanks,

That address has gone through although I dont yet have a reply back. The county clerk left on letter off from the address she gave me.
