Keep Watch!

Gwen Smith

Today's Truth
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith... (1 Peter 5:8-9a, NIV).

Friend to Friend
I was really excited that evening because I actually had a fun dinner plan ... which is not always the case. There was some grilled chicken left over from dinner the night before, so I decided to bust out my griddle and whip up some yummy grilled chicken quesadillas – a simple, yet very popular Smith-family delicacy. I know: it's a crazy-easy make, but for some reason my kids think I'm a genius when quesadillas are on the menu. Go figure.

I grabbed a knife, a chopping board, and the leftover chicken from the fridge. Minutes later, the chicken was ready for it's cheese and tortilla companions. While the griddle was heating up, I turned my attention to a few other family matters. I don't even remember what those matters were. It might have been a buzzer, noising from laundry room – alerting me of dry clothes that needed hung. I might have turned away to set the table or perhaps I had to intervene between my children who perpetually struggle to keep their hands to themselves. Whatever it was that drew my attention away from dinner prep was innocent – normal stuff – nothing out of the ordinary.

When I turned back to the business of quesadilla making, confusion gripped me as an empty cutting board glared at me. With an eyebrow raised quizzically, I asked my husband if he had moved my chicken.

"No Honey. I haven't touched your chicken." He replied, with a twinkle in his eye.

Hmmmmm. A chicken mystery. How odd.

I grew a bit anxious and quickly began to interview each of my children, "Did you take the chicken off the cutting board?"

"No Mom. I didn't touch the chicken." They said one after another.

I wondered, "If I didn't move the chicken and my family didn't move the chicken, then where is my chicken?" I looked around the room once more just to be sure that I hadn't simply placed the chicken somewhere else.

Then I saw it ... a look of guilt. A look that screamed and pleaded, "Yes! I took your chicken, but please don't be angry with me. It smelled so good and ... and ... I'm a big dog – I need my nourishment. Was it wrong? Okay. I know it was wrong. Please forgive me. I did it. I ate your chicken. I'm sorry. I'd like to go to my crate now..."

His ears lowered as my eyes met his. My brows furrowed. "Rocky! YOU ate my chicken! Bad dog!" I lamented in frustration as I began to make a new dinner plan...

Rocky's just a dog. He's not out to get me and he didn't mean to mess up our dinner plans, but he did prey on our family meal that night. He came and took what wasn't his because I had let my guard down. I wasn't watching over my chicken.

As believers in Jesus Christ, you and I must guard our hearts and watch over our homes. The Bible warns Christians to keep watch. Beyond things seen, there are spiritual battles taking place around us continually. If you are a believer and follower of Jesus Christ, then you have an enemy and his name is Satan. If you live to listen to the voice of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, then strap on your battle gear, girlfriend, because your enemy has a mission to destroy you. Beware!

In the New Testament book of John, chapter 10, Jesus identified himself as the exclusive way to our salvation – as the Gate for the sheep of God – as the One who loves, leads and rescues us. In John 10:10, Jesus warns that though His plan for us is protection, love and help, the enemy ... Satan ... "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they might have life, and have it to the full."

The Bible has a lot to say about this. It tells us time and time again to be alert to the schemes of Satan. To keep watch. "Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith..."(1 Peter 5:8-9a, NIV).

Though we have an enemy with a real plan to mess with our emotions, our health, our marriages, our children, our relationships and our thoughts, we are not without help or hope. We have both. God's power and protection are readily available to believers, 24/7. "But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one" (2 Thessalonians 3:3, NIV).

"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people" (Ephesians 6:10-18, NIV).

I was caught off guard the night that my dog took the chicken off my counter, and there have been times when I've been caught off guard in the midst of spiritual battles. As Christian women, let's remember to keep watch – over our hearts, our minds, and our homes. Let's purpose to proactively pray for protection, power and perseverance. May we always keep watch.

Let's Pray
Dear Lord, You are all-powerful and mighty to save. I praise you and delight in your plan for me to have abundant life through Jesus. Please cover me in Your Spirit today and equip me to fend off attacks from the enemy in your power and help.
In Jesus' Name I pray,
Amen.

Now it's your turn
What came to your mind/heart as you read this devotion? Can you identify an area where you feel the enemy is attacking you? Grab your journal and write about it. Pray for specific people and relationships that you feel need protection.

Not Guilty

Sharon Jaynes

Today's Truth
And I will ask the Father and He will give you another Counselor, to be with you forever – the Spirit of truth (John 14:16-17 NIV).

Friend to Friend
During Jesus' last supper with his disciples, He reassured them that He would not leave them as orphans. He said, "And I will ask the Father and He will give you another Counselor, to be with you forever – the Spirit of truth" (John 14:15). The Greek word which is also translated Helper (NASB) and Comforter (KJV), isparakletos and means a "person summoned to one's aid." Originally it was a term used in a court of justice to denote a legal assistant, counsel for the defense, an advocate; then, generally, one who pleads another's cause, an intercessor.

I love the image of the Holy Spirit representing me in a court of law. Satan is called the accuser and he accuses us day and night (Revelation 12:10).  He points His gnarly finger in our faces and says things like, "You aren't a very good Christian." "Jesus doesn't really love you." "You were a mistake when you were born." "You've really blown it this time."  "What makes you any different now than before you accepted Christ?"  "I don't see much fruit in your life." "You're a pitiful excuse as a wife, as a mother, as a child of God," etc.

Now tell me, have you ever thought any of those words before? Perhaps you've always assumed they were your own musings. That's exactly what Satan wants you to believe, and he does a pretty good job at making us believe them. They sound like us, it feels like us, but those words are from the accuser himself. It is always amazing to me that while I might have trouble hearing God's voice, Satan's usually comes through loud and clear.

On the other hand, the Holy Spirit is our counselor, our attorney, who comes along side us and repeats, "Not guilty!  Not guilty!  Not guilty!" He says, "No jail time!  You, my child, have been set free!"

Now, who are you going to believe?

Let's Pray
Dear Lord, there are many days when I feel guilty.  I know now that it is Satan who tries to make me feel guilty and whispers accusing thoughts into my head. Thank You that Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for my sin so that I can walk in freedom and live for eternity in heaven with You.

In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Now It's Your Turn
Do you feel guilty because of past sin?

Have you asked God to forgive you for those mistakes?

If so, have you accepted God's forgiveness or are you listening to the lies of Satan that continue to taunt you?

Who are you going to listen to?  Are you going to listen to God who says you are forgiven or Satan who says you are guilty?

The Beatitudes of Anger Management Part 1

Mary Southerland

Today's Truth
"In your anger, do not sin" (Ephesians 4:26).

Friend to Friend
Everyone has to deal with anger. The challenge is to deal with anger in the right way. Anger is powerful - an emotional warning that something is wrong. We have been hurt or rejected. Something has changed and we don't like it!

Anger itself is not sin. We just have to learn to express anger in the right way. Mishandled anger is destructive but anger that is handled correctly can become a tool for good. God's Word is filled with tips for learning to handle anger in a healthy and godly way.

Be still.
Psalm 46:10 "Be still and know that I am God."

If we are busy, it is much easier to ignore or refuse to face and deal with the real source of anger. Anger that is not dealt with in the right way accumulates over time, allowing bitterness to take root and rage to simmer just below the surface of everything we do, say, think or feel. In order to manage anger, we need to incorporate frequent and regular "stops" into our schedules; time set aside to simply be still and hear the voice of God.

Be quiet.
James 1:19-20 "Everyone should be slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires."

Our first response to conflict is often not a response at all ... but a reaction. We jump in with a brutal rebuttal or a thoughtless correction – which is like pouring gasoline on a fire. An explosion is bound to happen. Our first action should be to stop and think instead of rushing to respond in a way that could escalate tensions or provoke an offensive response from others. Listen to the other person before responding. Try counting to ten before saying anything. This may not address the anger directly, but it can minimize the damage you will do while angry.

Be wise.
Proverbs 25:28 "Like a city whose walls are broken down, is a man who lacks self-control."

Wisdom is doing the right thing at the right time for the right reason. Anger management comes from wisdom rooted in self-control. I love the story of Jesus driving the money-changers out of His Father's temple. In John 2:15, Scripture says Jesus "made a whip out of cords." Don't miss this picture. At the height of His anger, Jesus gathered several cords and braided a whip. I imagine it took several minutes at least to form a whip substantial enough to drive grown men anywhere. I think Jesus was so angry that He knew He needed to cool off, so He deliberately chose to be still, quiet and wise. When we are close to losing control of anger, we need to be wise.

Be discerning.
Psalm 4:4 "In your anger do not sin ... search your hearts and be silent."

The longer I work with people the more I realize that there is always a reason for their behavior.  Hurt people – hurt people. When you are angry at someone, ask yourself why. Think back to what led up to the conflict. Was it something someone said to you? Has a past problem triggered your present anger? Give yourself time to consider why you are upset and what you should do to handle it in a way that pleases God.

God created us with the capacity for emotions. That means He has a right plan and a right place for emotions in our lives. Anger management is a spiritual discipline that God honors, blesses and empowers. Tomorrow, we will look at four more ways God gives us to control anger.

Let's Pray
Father, please forgive me when I allow anger to control what I say and do. I want to honor You in the way I manage my emotions – especially the anger in my life. Fill my heart with Your peace. Help me cultivate the spiritual discipline of anger management and learn how to control my emotions instead of allowing them to control me.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.

Now it's your turn
Evaluate the level of anger in your life. Would people who know you well describe you as an angry person? Identity the source of your anger; then make the commitment to face and deal with whatever is causing your anger. Review each anger management tip. Which one jumps out at you as a starting point for learning to control anger in your life? Read and memorize the verse of Scripture listed with that tip. Pray – asking God to show you the steps you need to take today to manage the anger in your life. Record your thoughts and the truths God gives you in your journal.

The Beatitudes of Anger Management

Part 2

Mary Southerland

Today's Truth
"In your anger, do not sin" (Ephesians 4:26).

Friend To Friend
A minister was making a wooden trellis to support a climbing vine. As he was pounding away, he noticed a little boy watching him. The youngster didn't say a word so the preacher kept on working, thinking the boy would leave – but he didn't. Pleased at the thought that his work was being admire, the pastor finally asked, "Trying to pick up some pointers on gardening?" The little boy said, "Nope. I'm just waiting to hear what a preacher says when he hits his thumb with a hammer."

The people around us want to see what happens when life pushes our buttons and anger puts the squeeze on our emotions. While God created us with the capacity for strong emotions, it is our responsibility to control them instead of allowing them to control us. Yesterday, we looked at four ways to manage anger. Here are four more:

Be focused.
Psalm 37:8 "Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil."

I witnessed the utter strength and beauty of our daughter-in-law as she went through hours of labor during the birth of our twin grandchildren. The pain was excruciating, but Jodi worked through each contraction by doing two things: controlling her breathing and choosing a focus point. We need to do the same when we are angry. Take a deep breath and focus on the peace of God.

Be understanding.
James 1:19 "Everyone should be quick to listen."

We have two ears and one mouth for a reason—to listen twice as much as we speak. When you find yourself getting angry with someone, take time to listen to what the other person has to say. Make sure you understand their viewpoint. In fact, it might be a good idea for you to repeat it back to make sure you do get the real point. Only then, when you have processed that information and reigned in your emotions, should you offer a reply. Listening for the purpose of understanding plays a significant role in anger management.

Be kind.
Proverbs 15:1 "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."

It had been one of "those" mornings and I was behind schedule in preparing to teach the women's Tuesday morning Bible study at our church. I am fairly certain I did not exude peace and joy as I rushed around. Finally, it looked like everything was ready – everything except my heart. I knew I needed to spend some time alone with God before standing to teach His Word, so I found a quiet room where I could escape for a few minutes of solitude. As I began to pray, the door flew open and crashed against the wall behind it as the husband of one of our group leaders burst into the room. I could tell by the look on his face that he was not happy and that whatever was wrong was definitely my fault. In a very loud and very angry voice, the man began to explain the problem, ending his tirade with the question, "And just what are you going to do about it?" I knew what I wanted to say to the man. I also knew God didn't want me to say it. In a rare moment of wisdom, I faced my accuser with a smile and whispered, "I'll tell you exactly what I am going to do. I am going to do whatever it takes to make you happy."

I was completely unprepared for the man's reaction. His mouth fell open, his eyes widened in surprise - no, make that shock - and he stumbled backwards as if I had hit him. We stared at each other for what seemed like an hour before he finally whispered back, "Thank you." Without another word, the man turned and literally ran out of the room. The most amazing part of this story is that from that day on, he has been one of my strongest encouragers.

The next time someone makes you angry, put a smile on your face. It is hard to stay upset when you are smiling. Smiling is one of the best anger management tips because you can do it anytime, almost anywhere, and to pretty much anyone. The next time you are angry, choose to give a friendly smile of understanding, appreciation, or patience as you listen to the other side of the story.

Be ready.
1 Peter 5:8 "Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour."

The best way to manage anger is to prevent it in the first place. How? Balance your schedule and priorities so that you will not live in a constant state of frustration and exhaustion. Avoid spending time with angry people. Proverbs 22:24 says, "Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man; do not associate with one easily angered." We really do become like the people with whom we spend the most time. Pray constantly, asking the Holy Spirit to help you cultivate the habits that encourage peace – not anger. Memorize Scripture. The Word of God is a powerful weapon in dealing with and managing our emotions.

Anger is today's emotional epidemic. What does it take to make you angry? Do you have a short fuse or a long one? How many relationships in your life have been damaged by your anger? Remember ... more important than the way you were and more important than the way you are ... is the way you can be. Right now, surrender your anger to God and thank Him for a new beginning.

Let's Pray
Father, I need Your power and strength to help me control my anger. Forgive me for the damage and pain my anger has caused the people in my life. I want my emotional health to honor and please You.
In Jesus' name,

Amen.

Drifting

Sharon Jaynes

Today's Truth
"For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it" (Hebrews 2:1 NASB).

Friend To Friend
It was supposed to be a sailing adventure for Loran and his youth group at Central Church.  His friend procured three sailing vessels that resembled the Niña,Pinta and the Santa Maria. I'm not sure how much they looked like the ships that came across the Atlantic with the pilgrims, but they seemed just about as old.

When they left the dock, the sky was blue, the wind was brisk, and the teenagers were ready to ford the sea. However, by nightfall, a threatening gale blew in and the rolling waves grew to fifteen foot walls of water, tossing the tiny boats like toys in a toddlers tub.

"Loran," the captain said, "This storm could mean big trouble for us. You're going to have to stay up all night and hold the wheel steady to keep the boat on course."

So all-night, Loran fought the storm. He kept alert. He prayed to the One who calms the seas and kept his eyes on the sailboats in front of him, one of which held two of his most prized possessions: his daughters. Hundreds of times, the boat shot straight into the air and then dashed into the inky water. But Loran held fast. It was a battle he was determined to win.

In the wee hours of the morning, the wind and rains came to a halt. The storm had passed, and once again the boats cut a smooth path across the glassy sea. Everyone was exhausted from the rollicking of the night before, so the team decided to look for a lagoon to drop anchor and rest. One was found, and the three sailing vessels stopped for a few hours of rest and relaxation in the safety of the cove.

Loran jumped into the cool crystal blue water and suddenly realized how tired he was from the struggle of the night before. He turned over on his back, closed his burning eyes, and began to float. Slowly the knots in his neck and back began to unwind and tension escaped from his aching muscles. The noises of the teens playing in the water were soon muffled and the only sound he heard was water splashing against his skin and the occasional call of a sea gull. He was so relaxed he almost drifted off to sleep as his body drifted out to sea.

After some time, Loran looked up and noticed that he had drifted a great distance away from the rest of his party. They were playing happily in the water and had no idea Loran was gone.

"OK, Lord. Help me get back," he prayed.

Loran swam and swam, fighting the water with all his might, but the receding tide was stronger than he was. After what seemed like a lifetime, Loran was still a mile or so from his friends and family.

"Help!" he cried. But no one heard his distant cry.

"Oh God! Don't let me die now."

Somehow, Loran finally made it back to the boat alive. As he lay panting on the deck, he realized a great truth. Over the past twenty-four hours, he had been in great danger two times - once battling the storm and the other drifting out to sea. But of the two, he was in more danger when he was carelessly drifting along than he was when he was alert and standing fast.

God spoke to me by Loran's story. Paul tells us in Hebrews 2:1 "For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not  drift away from it."  Carelessly drifting can be a dangerous business, but storms keep us alert and ready at the helm. I need to be alert at all times, and be careful not to drift aimlessly along but listen as God speaks to me through the course of life.

Let's Pray
Dear Father, help me to always be alert. I know that the devil roams around like a roaring lion looking for those who are aimlessly drifting through life. He sneaks in when we least expect it. Help me never get so comfortable with my life that I drift aimlessly along rather than stay alert to the changing winds and tides – holding fast to You in the storms of life and in the calm seasons as well. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Now It's Your Turn
Can you think of a time when you were caught off guard by a temptation or by the devil?

Holy Adonai

Gwen Smith

Today's Truth
"Then said I, Woe is me! For I am undone and ruined, because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!" Isaiah 6:5 (Amplified Bible)

Friend To Friend
Have you ever been 'undone' before the LORD?  Have you shaken your head in awe at the mere thought of being accepted as holy in His sight? The prophet Isaiah experienced God in His splendor, through a vision that left him flat-out speechless.

"In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above Him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another:

"Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory."

At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. "Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty" (Isaiah 6:1-5).

I shudder to think how often I approach this awesome, powerful, holy LORD without the reverence that is due Him. I confess that every fiber of my being should fall before Him and shout, "I am undone!" so much more than I actually do. Isaiah's response takes us to the place we should be ...face down before our holy, royal, heavenly King.

As a worship leader, I often find myself torn between the calling to lead people into God's holy presence and feelings of unworthiness. The fact of the matter is – I am unworthy of the call. I mess up on a regular basis. At times I behave selfishly, at times I allow anger to get the better of me ... honestly, the list could go on and on. BUT GOD, through His only Son Jesus Christ, made a way for me to be holy and acceptable in His sight. How amazing is that? How amazing is His love? He made a ways for each of us to be forgiven! When we place our faith in Jesus Christ, confess our sins and ask to be forgiven, the Bible tells us that God forgives our sins. (1 John 1:9) Not only does God forgive our sins, but He looks upon us as holy because of Jesus! Oh, friend, we have so much to be thankful for!

With the weight of this in mind, I was inspired to write a worship song called "Holy Adonai." Adonaiis a Hebrew name for God meaning "Master, Lord, LORD, or owner."

** Please take a moment to listen to and worship along with Gwen's song Holy Adonai. Turn up your speakers and CLICK HERE TO GO TO HER FACEBOOK PAGEwhere you can hear the song ... then come back to the devotion so we can pray together and go a bit deeper. **

My dear friend, I can't help but join the heavenly creatures as I shout from my home in North Carolina to you across the globe: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory."  As you read this devotion in Maine, Florida, Pennsylvania, Texas, Idaho, California, New York, Indiana, Brazil, Guatemala, Germany, India, Uganda, Croatia, Australia, China or Norway. In whatever city, whatever state, whatever country you reside, would you join heaven's song and lift the name of the LORD high today as a united body of sisters? Let us be 'undone' together and bow before our King with a renewed awe of His greatness. He is worthy!

Let's Pray
Most Holy Father, Adonai, I pray that You would forgive me for all the times that I have come into Your presence lacking reverence. You are worthy of all praise! May You become greater in my life and may I become less. Empower me to live a life that points to your glorious splendor. Thank you, Lord!

In the matchless name of my risen Savior Jesus Christ,

Amen.

Now It's Your Turn

Read Psalm 103.

Take a few moments to hum or sing a favorite worship song that focuses on the awesomeness of God. (Here are some suggestions:  "I Exalt Thee" – "Heart of Worship" – "How Great Is Our God" – "How Great Thou Art" – "Fairest Lord Jesus" – "Doxology")

Do you feel unworthy to approach God's throne this morning because of sin? His love is unconditional and His grace extends beyond anything you have done because of Jesus. Ask the Lord to forgive you. Pray. He is waiting with open arms to embrace you right now. Go to Him!

Who Knows ... Maybe a Miracle is Coming Your Way

Sharon Jaynes

Today's Truth
"Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me!" (Matthew 15:22 NIV)

Friend To Friend
Belva held her twitching daughter in her arms. With eyes rolled back and thrashing limbs, the child convulsed on the earthen floor.

"Oh Mara," the distraught mother cried. "When will this ever end?"

For years little Mara had violently convulsed in predictable synchronized intervals. The child often cried out in loud screeching voices, threw herself against the walls of their one room home, and cut her arms with rocks and broken pottery until blood flowed.

Belva and her daughter lived in Tyre, a Gentile Phoenician city that bordered Galilee along the Mediterranean Sea. She was from Canaanite descent- a people who had been enemies of the Jews since they marched into the Promised Land hundreds of years before. The Jews despised the entire region from Tyre to Sidon, and avoided it at all costs. The land was home to idol worship of the false gods Baal and Ashera that practiced temple prostitution and human sacrifice.

But among the ungodliness that permeated the city, words of Jesus' miracles and teaching drifted among the streets. Belva drank in the stories like rain on the dry cracked streets upon which she walked. How she longed for a drop of hope to fall on her weary soul. One story caught her attention more than any other.

"Belva, have you heard?" a neighbor began. "Jesus delivered a boy much like your Mara."

"Tell me," Belva asked hungrily. "What happened?"

"There was a boy in Galilee who was much like your Mara. He had an evil spirit that seized him and caused him to scream out for no reason at all. The spirit threw him into convulsions and he foamed at the mouth. It was destroying the boy and his father, for that matter."

"So what happened?" Belva asked, hungry for a morsel of hope.

"Well, Jesus was just returning from a trip with three of his disciples. I believe their names were Peter, James and John. His other disciples had remained back in the village while they were away. This father took his son to them for healing. But nothing happened. He convulsed right before their eyes and they couldn't do a thing."

"But then Jesus and his three friends walked into the crowd and this father fell at his feet."

"Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child," the father cried. "A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth.  It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him."

"That sounds just like my Mara," Belva cried. "What happened next?"

"Well, the father begged Jesus to drive the demons out. And right then and there, while the father was pleading with The Teacher, the boy approached and the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion!"

"Oh my" Belva cried with her hand over her mouth.

"Then this Jesus rebuked the evil spirit! 'Come out of him!' he cried. And then, just like that, the demon was gone. Jesus picked up the boy and handed him back to his father."

Tears filled Belva's eyes as she listened to this miraculous account. If only I could go to Jesus, she thought. But he wouldn't have anything to do with the likes of me, a woman:  a despised Gentile woman with Canaanite heritage, none-the-less. That was the story of a man and his son. Does God even care about a woman and her little girl?

"Some say he is the Messiah – the Son of David. Who knows? Too bad Jesus won't be coming here," her friend continued. "He would never step foot in this forsaken place."

And with a shrug, the talebearer walked away.

"O God," Belva prayed. "If there is any way you could make an exception for one so lowly as me. I know I am from a cursed race, a despised people, but my daughter is being destroyed. She is only a child. I am not asking for me. I am begging for her. Please send Jesus my way.  Please heal my little daughter. You are our only hope." And with those final words on her lips, Belva cried herself to sleep.

Let's Pray
Dear Lord, I've felt like Belva so many times. "Is there any way you could make an exception for one as lowly as me?" I cry.  "Please send Jesus my way."  I'm waiting.  I'm anticipating His arrival.  In His Name I pray, Amen.

Now It's Your Turn
Today's devotion is a glimpse into what the life of the Syrophoenician mother's life could have been like.  It is so easy to read about the women in the Bible and not see them as gals just like us ... but they were.  They loved their children, did their housework, and longed for rest from their troubles.

Have you ever been in what seemed like a hopeless situation?

How did God come through for you?

I'd love to hear about it.  Let's share on www.facebook.com/sharonjaynes.

Perhaps you're still waiting for you miracle.  Join us tomorrow for the rest of the story.

He's Here!

Sharon Jaynes

Today's Truth
"Oh, woman, your faith is something else. What you want is what you get!' Right then her daughter became well" (Matthew 15:28 The Message).

Friend To Friend
I hope you read yesterday's devotion. We left Belva crying herself to sleep and muttering the following prayer: "O God, if there is any way you could make an exception for one so lowly as me. I know I am from a cursed race, a despised people. But my daughter is being destroyed. She is only a child.I am not asking for me. I am begging for her. Please send Jesus my way.  Please heal my little daughter. You are our only hope."

With those words she fell asleep.

"He's here! He's here!" A raucous crowd outside Belva's window startled her from her slumber.  She rubbed the sleep from her eyes and roused herself out of bed. Quickly she ran to the window and peeked out to see what the commotion was all about. Then she saw him. No one had to tell her the identity of the stranger walking past her home. Somehow she just knew.

"It's Jesus!" she cried.

Belva grabbed her shawl and flew from her home. Hope was passing by and she fell at his feet to block the way. "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me!  My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession."

Jesus didn't answer the woman but kept walking along the dusty road.

Again she cried. "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession."

"Send this woman away," the disciples urged. "She keeps crying out after us. Get rid of her."

Jesus then paused and spoke to the woman. "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel."

Kneeling humbly at his feet, she sobbed. "Lord, help me!"

"It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs," Jesus replied.

"Yes, Lord," she gently whispered, "But even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table."

Jesus held out his hand and pulled this woman to her feet - this woman to whom he had been sent. "Woman, you have great faith!  Your request is granted."

Belva ran home to find her daughter lying on her bed, brushing her doll's hair, and in her right mind. She never had a seizure again.

Years later, as she often did, Mara asked her mother to tell her a bedtime story as she tucked her into bed. "Mommy, tell me the story of Jesus again."

Let's Pray
Oh Jesus, thank You for caring about a simple woman like Belva.Thank You for caring for a simple woman like me. Just as Mara longed to hear the story of how Jesus changed her life, I love to tell the story of how You changed mine! In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Now It's Your Turn
Did that bother you when Jesus didn't answer the mother right away? I'll admit that when I read the scenario in Matthew 15, it caused my heart to ache for her. But Jesus had something up His sleeve. He was using this as a teaching moment in the lives of the disciples. His silence caused her to show just how much faith she had.

Has Jesus' silence in your life ever caused you to dig down deep to discover just how much faith you have?

What was the result of this mother's persistence?

What can you learn from her?

How has persistent praying ushered in a miracle in your life?  Let's share at www.facebook.com/sharonjaynes.

Got faith?

Mary Southerland

Today's Truth
Matthew 21:21-22 I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and it will be done.

Friend To Friend
We all have faith. We go to a doctor we hardly know. He hands us a prescription we cannot read. We take that prescription to a pharmacist we have never met. He gives us a medication we do not recognize or understand and we take it ... all in faith. Faith in God does not come all at once. Faith is a step-by-step process that begins with one small step and increases as we go.  An Old Testament story found in Joshua 3 illustrates this truth.

The Israelites are camped on the bank of the Jordan River. Forty years earlier, they had escaped from Egypt and have been wandering around in the wilderness ever since. All of their needs have been met by God. They have seen miracle after miracle and now they can see Canaan, the Promised Land. However, there is a problem.

A huge river stands between them and the Promised Land and there is no way around it. To make things worse, it is flood season and the usual places to cross are covered with deep, rushing water. The Israelites knew God could stop the river right before their eyes or He could throw a bridge across it - but He doesn't. Instead, He gives Joshua some very strange orders.

First order
The people are to keep an eye on the Ark of the Covenant.

Second order
As soon as they see the priests carrying the Ark, the people are to fall in behind them.

Third order
Joshua tells the people to expect amazing things to happen.

Fourth order
Joshua commands the priests to pick up the Ark and stand in the river.

God told His people that He would make a dry path through the river but the priests had never seen that happen. In fact, they hadn't even been born when the Red Sea was parted and there were no reruns of the Ten Commandments at the local Wilderness Theatre. The Israelites had spent their entire adult lives in the wilderness and finally, they could see a way out. Oh, and one more problem - the priests couldn't swim. This was probably the first river they had even been close to in their lives. I can imagine their fear and questions. God was asking them to step out in faith as never before.

I don't imagine the Israelites had a great deal of faith in God at that moment, but they had just enough faith to take that first step. And that was enough.

Joshua 3:15-17 (NCV) During harvest the Jordan overflows its banks. When the priests carrying the Ark came to the edge of the river and stepped into the water, the water upstream stopped flowing. It stood up in a heap. So the people crossed over.

Notice that God did nothing until those toes touched the water. That first step was all God needed to see. Many times, we won't take the first step because we're afraid we won't be able to make the whole journey.

Don't wait until you believe it all.
Don't wait until you can see it all.
Don't wait until you understand it all.

Step out in childlike faith and put your trust in God. Some people say it doesn't really matter where we place our faith, as long as our faith is real. I could not disagree more!

A United Press release told of a mid-western hospital where officials discovered that the firefighting equipment had never been connected. For 35 years, the medical staff and the patients had believed in this system, but it had never been attached to the city's water main. The pipe that led from the building extended 4 feet underground -- and then stopped. The expensive equipment was adequate for the building but it lacked the most important thing – water. Yes, their faith was real but it was dangerously misplaced.

Our faith is worthless unless it is placed in God alone. We have no hope apart from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. One of my favorite worship songs says it beautifully:

I have a hope that will never fade away.
It's alive in me – living day to day.
I have a hope.
And my hope has a name – Jesus Christ.

Let's Pray
Father, I come to You today in faith. I want to know You. I want to follow You for the rest of my life. I am afraid because my faith is small, but I am placing the faith I do have in You, Lord. I trust You to strengthen and grow that faith and help me become a fully devoted follower that pleases and honors You.
In Jesus' Name,
Amen.

Now It's Your Turn
Scripture tells us that without faith, it is impossible to please God. Matthew 17:20 also tells us that even a tiny amount of faith pleases Him. (Jesus) replied, "I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

A mustard seed is tiny, but once planted, grows into a large tree. Jesus said a little faith can have incredible results. We don't need a lot of faith - just as much as a mustard seed to produce great results. Why? Because our God is an awesome God and our faith depends on Him!

What is the greatest problem in your life today?
What step do you need to take to face that problem with faith instead of fear?
What is keeping you from trusting God and stepping out in faith?

More From The Girlfriends
You are not alone in your quest for a life of purpose and meaning. I am constantly evaluating my faith and seeking God for the next step He wants me to take. And I can tell you that He is faithful and will keep every promise He has ever made. He is faithful ... even when our faith is small.

Connecting the Dots

Gwen Smith

Today's Truth
"But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you." (John 14:26, NIV)

Friend To Friend
Ever since I was young, I've loved connecting dots. In my childhood, it was dots with numbers on paper that I could connect and color. As I threw my attention to the page and followed the numbered steps, a picture developed. A new creation appeared. It brought joy to my little-girl heart.

My grown-up dot-connecting challenges are far from a kid's fun sheet. There are "life dots" like: parenting dots, faith dots, emotion dots, relationship dots, job dots, and decision dots. I continually struggle to make sense of situations and circumstances and long for a simply numbered life sheet to give me guidance and direction.

Do you ever feel that way? Do you ever wonder how to connect the practical instruction of God's Word to your daily choices and behaviors? Do you struggle to understand how to connect the dots between your questions and God's answers? Between the decisions you need to make and God's wisdom?

If you have a pulse, I'm guessing you deal with this dot-connecting life stuff regularly like I do. The Lord knew we would struggle with this, and He gives each of us the power to connect our life dots according to His plan. How? Through His Holy Spirit.

In Scripture, we see a beautiful promise of God. Before His crucifixion and resurrection, Jesus told His disciples that He must die in order to connect the sinful hearts of man to the holy heart of God. He explained that though He was leaving this world, His followers would not be left alone or without power.

"If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever – the Spirit of truth" (John 14:15-17a).

Jesus went on to say, "All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you" (John 14:25-26).

The Holy Spirit works in and through us to connect the life dots between our heart and God's. He's the connector between our problems and God's solutions. When we go to God in prayer and ask Him to help us take the next step, or make the next decision, or choose the next response, He will faithfully lead us to the next dot with wisdom through the power of His Holy Spirit.

Invite the Holy Spirit to lead your decisions and emotions today. Open your heart to His counsel. Call on His wisdom and listen for the whispers of His truth. When you do, He will connect your life dots in order to bring glory to God the Father. Imagine what our lives, families, churches, and communities would look like if we allowed the Spirit of God within us to connect our life dots each day. The world would see a beautiful faith picture.

Let's Pray
Heavenly Father, You are all-knowing and all-powerful. You know every decision I need to make and every challenge I face. Please forgive me for the times that I try to figure this life out on my own. I need You. I need Your Holy Spirit to give me strength, wisdom, and direction, specifically concerning ______________. Thank you, Lord.
In Jesus' Name I pray,
Amen.

Now It's Your Turn
After telling His disciples about the Holy Spirit in John 14, Jesus blessed them with a peace promise: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" (John 14:27).

Where does this promise find you today?

Whatever you are facing, know that the Holy Spirit is ready to guide and comfort you. Journal your thoughts and ask God to connect the faith dots for you so you can bring Him glory in your circumstances and then experience His peace.
