Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall
Sharon Jaynes

Today's Truth
"Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: 'Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.' He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit." (Galatians 3:13, 14 NIV)

Friend to Friend
Today, I want to take you back a few years to one of our childhood fairy tales. Even though it may be familiar to you, stay with me for a surprise ending.

It all began long, long ago, in a land faraway, where a young Princess named Snow White lived.  Her stepmother, the Queen, was very cruel and jealous of Snow White's beauty.  Every day, the vain queen approached her magic mirror and asked, "Mirror, mirror on the wall.  Who's the fairest of them all?"  For many years, the mirror answered, "You are fairest of all, O Queen."  But Snow White grew from a little girl into a woman.

One day, the Queen approached her magic mirror and asked, "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all?"  Much to her regret, the queen heard the answer she knew would inevitably come.

"Fair is thy beauty, Majesty, but behold -- a lovely maid I see, one who is more fair than thee.  Lips red as a rose, hair black as ebony, skin white as snow..."

At once, the Queen shrieked in anger, knowing that the mirror spoke of none other than Snow White, her beautiful stepdaughter.  The queen decided to eliminate her competition.  She ordered one of her huntsmen to kill the fair princess in yonder woods.

The next day, the huntsman took the princess to the woods, but could not bring himself to end the life of one so lovely. Thus, he left her in the forest, hoping the queen would think he had accomplished his mission.  Snow White stumbled across seven adorable young dwarfs with giant hearts who loved and cared for her.

The next day, the evil Queen asked the mirror once again, "Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's the fairest of them all?"

Once again, the mirror answered, "Snow White."

Realizing her competition was not dead; the queen transformed herself into a witch (which did not take much effort, I might add) and went to find the girl.  When she did, she devised a fool-proof plan to offer Snow White a poisoned apple that would cast her into an eternal sleep.

The dwarfs warned Snow White not to talk to any strangers while they were away doing their chores in the forest.  But when the witch came bringing the tempting apple, Snow White took the fruit, ate a bite, and fell into a sleep that was supposed to last forever.

As a child, I remember reading the story of Snow White and almost crying at the fate of one so lovely.  As an adult, I read the story and realize it is more than a fairy tale: it is our story as well.

Satan was once a lovely prince.  Ezekiel describes him as once being "full of wisdom and perfect in beauty" with every precious stone as his covering.  He was the anointed cherub who was on the mountain of God (Ezekiel 28:12-14).  But pride was his downfall and he wanted to be like God.  As a result, God cast Satan from heaven with one-third of all the angels (Isaiah 14:12-23).  After his downfall, he was no longer the "fairest of them all." Satan, like the cruel and wicked queen, then came after us with the poisoned fruit of disobedience.

But the story of Snow White didn't end with her being caught in the evil spell.  One day, a handsome Prince rode through the forest on his white horse.  When he saw Snow White deep in sleep, he fell in love with her and placed a kiss upon her lips.  When he did, she sat up, blinked her eyes, and sprang to life.  The prince scooped Snow White into his arms and took her off to his castle where they lived happily ever after.

Oh dear sisters, a handsome prince has come into our lives as well.  His name is Jesus.  Our prince has placed a kiss upon our lips, taken us in His strong arms, and lifted the evil curse. Now when we look into the mirror of God's word and ask, "Who's the fairest of them all?" God answers," You are, my child" -- for He sees the reflection of His Son in our eyes.

"As a child of God
Looks daily into the Word of God
And beholds intently the glory of God
As manifested in the Son of God,
She shall, by the will of God,
Be transformed into the image of God."
Harry Reeder

Let's Pray
Dear Lord, Thank You for rescuing me from the forces of evil in this world and transferring me to the kingdom of light.  Thank You for breaking the curse that was placed on all mankind due to the disobedience of Adam and Eve in the garden and awaking our dead spirits to newness of life.  I praise You that nothing, absolutely nothing, can separate us from Your love.

In Jesus' name. Amen

Now It's Your Turn
When you were a child, how did you feel when reading the story of Snow White?  Were you concerned about her fate?

How did you feel about the wicked Queen?  About the handsome prince?

Now, as an adult princess who has been rescued by the Prince of Peace, how do you feel toward Him?

The Bible tells us to "resist the devil and he will flee from you."  What would have happened had Snow White said "no" to the Queen's tempting fruit?  What would have happened if Eve had said "no" to Satan's tempting fruit?

Have you ever been in a tempting situation and taken the bait?  What was the outcome?

Have you ever been in a tempting situation and refused to take the bait?  What was the outcome?

Try your hand at writing your own version of Snow White with you as the damsel in distress and Jesus as the handsome prince.

More from the Girlfriends
Adam and Eve had everything!  They lived in the perfect world in the Garden of Eden.  Then the evil one tempted them to disobey God and they ate the forbidden fruit.  They lost it all.  But Jesus Christ came to destroy the work of the devil and restore to us all that was lost.  Then why do we continue to struggle?  I believe it is because we don't realize what we have as a child of God.  We still live like fallen creatures rather than restored children of God.  Want to know more?  See Experience the Ultimate Makeover and discover who you are and what you have as a child of God.

My Psalm 23 Season
Mary Southerland

Today's Truth
Psalm 23:1 (NASB) "The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want."

Friend to Friend
Stores are already filled with Christmas decorations. Television ads for the newest and best toys multiply every day. It won't be long until we are wringing our hands, wondering where the money for Christmas gifts is going to come from, a fact that must sadden the heart of God. To think that our first thoughts of His birth are wrapped in financial distress clearly indicates the reality that we do not understand or trust the sufficiency of God.

Have you noticed that it is always more fun to pay the bills when you actually have money to pay them instead of holding what my husband calls "The Monthly Draw"?  The Southerland Monthly Draw is held when there are more bills than money. The rules are quite simple. All of the bills are placed in a stack. Dan then rifles through the stack, drawing out one of the bills to pay. This process continues until there is no more money. The rest of the bills have to wait until more money comes in.  Sound familiar?

One morning, I walked into the study and could immediately tell by the look on Dan's face that the "draw" was not going so well. Finances had been extremely tight for a variety of reasons.  Dan and I had prayed our way through that month, knowing that the next few months would only hold more of the same. I debated whether I should stick around to offer encouragement or run for the hills. I decided to stay. "Honey, can I help?" Dan looked up at me with a weak grin and said, "Not unless you have $900.00." Oh, boy! It was worse than I thought. Seeing the look on my face, my sweet husband quickly added, "Don't worry, honey, God always comes through." Now I must admit that at that precise moment, I would have preferred a tangible sample of God's provision. You know - something along the lines of a money tree in the back yard or an oil well in the front. I went to my desk, hoping to find a forgotten check from a speaking event or book sale but came up empty.  An examination of my check register was even more depressing.  Did we really need two children?  Maybe we should sell one! (Just kidding) "Lord, I want to trust You as my Provider but right now, we really need $900.00," I informed the God of the Universe.  How is that for a prayer of faith?

Dan did all he could do with the stack of bills and went next door to visit our neighbor while I stayed home, plotting and scheming ways to come up with $900.00. In fact, I spent the rest of the day in what my mother called "a tizzy" because as far as I could see, there was no plan and there was no scheme remotely looming in the Southerland picture that could produce the needed amount of money. And that was the problem.  I was only looking "as far as I could see".

Finally, I left the need at His feet and went on with what was left of my day. As I began to prepare dinner, I remembered that I had forgotten to check the mail and quickly headed outside. There it was, God's perfect provision just sitting in our mailbox, waiting for me to come - an unexpected check for $949.64.  Dan and I became aware of our need that morning.  The check was mailed several days before.  God met the need before the need was evident. He always does! In Philippians 4:19, Paul reminds us that our God will "meet all our needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus."

I often learn the most life-changing lessons at the feet of children. Ellie is the five-year-old granddaughter of a very close friend, Gina, who often cheers me up by sharing what she calls an "Ellie-ism".  Not long ago, Gina was telling me about the prayer Ellie had prayed the night before at dinner. The meal was ready. Everyone in the family was seated, and Ellie volunteered to say the blessing.  Every adult at the table smiled, wondering what childish offering they were about to hear. What they heard was profound truth from God as spoken through the words of a child.  Head bowed, hands folded, Ellie prayed, "God is great.  God is good.  Let us thank Him for our food.  By His hand, we all are fed.  Give us, Lord our daily bread.  THE END!"  That about sums it up!

Just as the shepherd meets every need of his sheep, God meets our every need. Just as the sheep totally depend upon their shepherd's care and provision, we would be wise to depend totally upon God.  He is our Provider.  He is our Source and in light of that reality, stress flees, leaving only peace.  As the holidays approach, fix your heart on God, rely upon your Shepherd, and trust Him to meet every need in your life and rest in the fact that He is the beginning ... and the end.

My Psalm 23

Lord, You are my Shepherd
You are my Identity

I shall not want
You are my Provision

You make me lie down in green pastures
You are my Rest

You lead me beside the still waters
You are my Replenishment

You restore my soul
You are my Healing

You lead me in the paths of righteousness
You are my Guide

For Your name's sake
You are my Purpose

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
You are my Strength.

I will fear no evil
You are my Security

For You are with me
You are my Peace.

Your rod and your staff they comfort me.
You are my Deliverer

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies
You are my Hope

You anoint my head with oil
You are my Blessing

My cup runs over
You are my Abundance

Surely, goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life
You are my Promise.

And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
You are my Destiny.

Forever
You are my All in All!

Let's Pray
Father, in the midst of preparing for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, I pray that I would constantly be reminded of the truth that it really is all about You. Give me the eyes to see those in need around me.  Give me the heart to reach out to the walking wounded.  Help me recognize and be thankful for the amazing journey this year has been and remember that You have been there every step of the way, through every valley and over every mountain.  I give You praise!  In Jesus' name, Amen.

Now It's Your Turn

Read Psalm 28:7.
How does the psalmist encourage us to praise God?
When the psalmist writes that God is our strength and shield, what do you think he means?  How does that apply to your own life?
According to this verse, what is the right heart attitude that prompts us to praise God?
Notice the psalmist tells us to "give" praise.  What about our feelings?  Will we always feel thankful?
More From The Girlfriends
If we based our Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations on Psalm 23, I think it would change the way we experience each one.  I am easily distracted these days, especially when my "to do" list grows longer by the minute but I am praying that this year, my heart and mind will be wrapped up in Him alone. In my two new MP3s, The Secret of a Merry Christmas and Giving the Perfect Gift, I share practical ways to make that prayer a reality, and if the holiday stress is getting to you, download my new bible study, God's Answer to Stress as a gift to yourself.  Blessings!

Shattered Dreams (part 1)
Sharon Jaynes

Today's Truth
"Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has born?  Though she may forget, I will not forget you!  See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands."  (Isaiah 49:15 NIV)

Friend to Friend
My husband and I were reveling in our time with our good friends from our college days, Larry and Cynthia Price.  It had been almost a year since our last visit and I was hungry to hear of the latest family news about their children, Daniel, Julianna, and Laura Beth.  While the four adults feasted on grilled teriyaki chicken, steamy baked potatoes, tossed salad with home grown sliced tomatoes, the kids ran out the door to attend the Friday night high school football game.  For over an hour, conversation and sweet tea flowed like a mountain stream. We were just finishing the last bites of chocolate silk pie when our laughter was interrupted by the ringing phone.

"Hello," Cynthia answered.

I could only hear one side of the conversation, but I could tell something was terribly amiss.

"Daniel, calm down!  What's wrong?  Talk slower," she urged. "Oh God, no," Cynthia gasped.  "OK, Daniel.  I'll meet you at the hospital."

An ashen Cynthia turned to her husband and could barely force the words out of her mouth. "Larry, Daniel said that Will took a bad hit at the football game.  He went in for a tackle.  They hit.  Will stood up.  He fell on the ground and never got back up.  They are taking him to the hospital in Clinton."

"Cynthia, you two go on to meet them.  Don't even think twice about us," I assured her.  "I'll clean up and take any calls that come in."

"Are you sure?" she asked.  "I hate to leave you here."

"Absolutely, now scoot!"

Before they left, we held hands and prayed for Will, his mother Luanne, his dad, Bob, and his two brothers and little sister who were all at the game.

Larry and Cynthia drove down their mile long driveway and my mind rushed back to another time fourteen years earlier when I first met Luanne Johnson.  She was Cynthia's best friend in the sleepy rural town of Rose Hill, NC, four hours from our home.  She had just given birth to her third child, Bailey.  Bailey was born with a hole in his heart.  When he was seven months old, Luanne kissed his cheek as the doctors and nurses rolled him into the operating room to attempt to correct the defect.  The physicians assured the Johnson's that the procedure had a 98% success rate and there was no cause for alarm.  While Bailey came through the surgery just fine, he developed complications a few days later and had to go back in for a second procedure.  This operation was not successful. Bailey died on the operating table.  Bailey died on his brother Will's third birthday.  Now this.

I pictured Luanne riding in the ambulance or perhaps following in a car close behind the blaring sirens.  I recalled the words I had penned in another book, "There is an inexplicable bond that exists between a mother and her child.  Even though the umbilical cord is severed in the delivery room, a cord of love connects them for the rest of their lives."  Luanne already had one deposit in heaven.  The thought of a second was almost too painful to imagine.

Oh, he'll be OK, I thought.  I'd grown up in a small North Carolina town where high school football was a part of life for the entire community.  When I was in elementary school, I went to Friday night games and ran around under the bleachers paying very little attention to the pigskin on the field.  When I was a teenager, I was a cheerleader and knew just enough to know which cheers to yell when.  My father-in-law had been a coach.  Boys were constantly, "down on the play."  But they always got up.  Didn't they?

I'm not sure how much time passed, but Cynthia's phone call startled me back to reality.

"Sharon, this is Cynthia. Will didn't make it."

"What do you mean 'didn't make it?'" I asked.

"Will died before he even got to the hospital," she said.

Somehow, the news spread through the quiet little town that Will Johnson had been hurt at the football game. All through the night, I fielded calls that came to the Price's home.  Cynthia was Luanne's best friend and Daniel had been Will's best friend.

The next day, the news reported the story.  Will had gone in to make a tackle and when he hit the boy carrying the ball, his opponent's helmet crashed into Will's chest  On impact, Will's heart had a concussion.  He stood up and said, "Coach, I think I need to come out."  Then he collapsed and his heart never beat again.

I was just a visitor from 200 miles away.  I didn't know most of these people but one thing was clear.  What affected one, affected them all.  A mother's dreams had been shattered and the entire town felt her pain.

Shattered dreams are a part of life.  Children die, husbands leave, jobs are lost, cancer tests come back positive, proposals are rejected, teenagers rebel, houses burn, terrorists attack,  and the list goes on.  Part of the pain is the feeling that God has forgotten us, grown deaf to our cries, or lost our address.  Zion cried, "The LORD has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me" (Isaiah 49:14).  David lamented, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?  Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning?  O my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, and am not silent" (Psalm 22: 1, 2).  Even Jesus called out from the cross, "My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46) I have cried, "Where are you, God? How could you do this to me?  Have you forgotten all about me?"  Then He answers, "Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne?  Though she may forget, I will not forget you!  See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands" (Isaiah 49:15).

Ah, the string around His finger, the brand on His palm, the scar on His heart.  No, He doesn't forget. Join me tomorrow as we continue looking at Shattered Dreams and God - the Restorer of Broken Dreams.

Let's Pray
Dear Father, sometimes I don't understand why things happen.  Why would a tsunami take hundreds of lives?  Why would a mother bury her child? But this one thing I do know.  You are always good and Your ways are always good.  Help me to trust Your heart when I don't see Your hand.  Help me to trust You in the dark.

In Jesus' Name,
Amen

Now It's Your Turn
Think of a time when you felt as though God had deserted you.  How did He assure you that He hadn't?

Perhaps you still feel like He has forgotten you?  That's OK to admit.  I have felt that way at times myself.  However, what does the truth of Isaiah 49:15 tell us?

The next time you are wondering where God is, just recite His promise to you found in Hebrews 13:5.

Shattered Dreams (Part 2)
Sharon Jaynes

Today's Truth
"I am the resurrection and the life.  He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die." (John 11:15 NIV)

Friend to Friend
In the New Testament, we find a story about two sisters whose dreams were shattered by a death in the family.  Jesus received word that one of His best friends, Lazarus, was sick. In reality, by the time the messenger had made the one day journey to inform Jesus about Lazarus' illness, he had already died. Jesus didn't leave right away, but tarried two days before making the journey to Bethany.  When Jesus arrived, Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days.  His death shook the entire village and many Jews from surrounding cities went to mourn their loss.  For these two women, their dreams for the future were bleak -- no husband, no children, no father, and now, no brother to take care of them.

When Martha heard Jesus was coming, her hopes soared and she ran to meet Him.

"Lord," Martha said to Jesus, "if you had been here, my brother would not have died" (John 11:12).  Can you relate to Martha?  Have you ever felt, Lord, if you had been here, this would not have happened to me. Where were you? Where are you now?

Then it is as if she thought better of the words that had escaped her lips and said, "But I know that even now, God will give you whatever you ask."

Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."

Martha answered, "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day."

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life.  He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.  Do you believe this?"

"Yes, Lord," she told him, "I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who has to come into the world."

Martha went back to her home and told Mary that Jesus was on the way.  Like Martha, Mary ran to meet him and said, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." Do you see a pattern? Once again -- If you had been here this would not have happened to me.  Where were you?

Do you think God hurts when we hurt?  Oh yes, dear sisters, God hurts.  Jesus wept when he saw the pain of those around him.  He wept for the two sisters and I suspect He wept for a people who did not understand the power of God.

After four days, Lazarus' body would have already begun to decay.  Make no mistake about it: God was about to do something so incredible, no one would refute His power.

Jesus ordered the stone rolled away from the mouth of the cave which served as Lazarus' tomb.  Then Jesus said, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?'

They took away the stone.  Then Jesus looked up and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me.  I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me."

When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"

And he did!

Jesus resurrected Mary and Martha's dream.

Those of us who have lost a loved one may be thinking....yeah, but God didn't bring my brother back.  God didn't save my child.  God didn't resurrect my dead marriage and if you read yesterday's devotion, God didn't bring Will back to life. (If you didn't see yesterday's devotion, I encourage you to go back and read part one of this series.)

Let's go back to Will for a moment. Did resurrection power take place after Will's death? His mother would say a resounding "yes."

Luanne shared with me that just days before Will's final football game he had said, "Mom, I'll be glad when this is all over. Now that I'm older, I see just how unimportant all this sports stuff is."

As Lou Ann knelt beside her boy on that football field, she begged him to keep breathing.  But then, as she felt him take his last breath, his words echoed in her heart,"I'll be glad when this is all over."

"It's all over, son," Luanne whispered.  "Go on home."

At Will's funeral a few days after his death, Luanne stood and shared the gospel message about the Jesus Will loved so much.  What was the result? Thirty people attending the service committed their lives to Christ or renewed their passion for serving Him.

"Mrs. Johnson, I gave my life to Christ today!"

"Luanne I haven't been following Jesus like I should. I recommitted my life to Him today and I'm going to get serious about my relationship with Him."

"Luanne, our family was in a shambles and I was thinking about leaving my husband.  After today, I have decided to make our marriage work.  I see how important family is."

"I have been putting my family on the back burner and letting everything and anything come before them.  After today, I'm putting my family second only to God."

The Johnson family continues to minister all across the state about the power of Jesus Christ that sustains us when our dreams are shattered.  Because of Will's death, hundreds have come to Christ, many family relationships have been restored, and churches have torn down denominational walls as the Presbyterians, Methodists, Baptists and Pentecostals in the tiny little town have made a historical move to worship together.  Being from a small North Carolina town myself, believe me - that is a miracle.

The Bible says that before we know Jesus Christ, we are dead in our transgressions.  We inherited a dead spirit from our father Adam.  However, when we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior, God gives us a new heart and a new spirit that is fully alive. This is resurrection power at its best.

Why did God allow Lazarus to die? He allowed it so His Son could be glorified through it (John 11:4). Why did God allow His own Son to die on the cross? To bring salvation to all who believe?  I suspect that is the same for Luanne and Bob's son as well.

Let's Pray
Dear Lord, there are some aspects of my life that have not turned out like I thought they would.  There are shattered dreams and many things I do not understand.  However, I do know this. You are a loving God and nothing happens to me that You cannot use for Your glory.  Help me to be open to see the good in the circumstances that seem at times to be so hard.  I choose to believe that You can redeem every situation in my life and use it for good.

In Jesus' name, Amen

Now It's Your Turn
Is there something that you have been praying about and perhaps you feel that God is "late?"

What can we learn about God's timetable from today's devotion?

In today's devotion, I quoted Jesus as saying, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?"  Could it be that Jesus is saying those same words to you today?

Would you be willing to pray that God would show you the dreams He has for you?

Would you be willing to give up your unfulfilled dreams and reach forward to what lies ahead?

Read the following verse and ponder what God wants you to leave behind and what He is calling you to reach toward. "But one thing I d Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead" (Philippians 3:13b NIV).

More from the Girlfriends
Shattered dreams are a part of life, but God has big plans for each of us.  Can you risk the hope that God still has dreams for your life?  That He hasn't forgotten you.  Place your hand firmly in His -- then take a deep breath and begin the exciting journey to a place you thought you'd never find:  the dream God planned for you all along.  You'll find all this and more in Sharon's book, Dreams of a Woman-God's Plan for Fulfilling Your Dreams.

Choose to Give Praise
Mary Southerland

Today's Truth
Psalm 50:23 "He who sacrifices thank offerings honors me and he prepares the way so that I may show him the salvation of God." (NIV)

Friend to Friend
My husband, Dan, grew up driving the family ski boat, pulling various family members and friends across some lake as they learned to water ski. Consequently, he is an excellent boat driver, especially for children or any novice on skis.  Both our son, Jered, and our daughter, Danna, learned to ski behind a boat driven by their dad. I knew they preferred Dan to other drivers but did not realize just how important it was to them until someone else tried to take the wheel.

Several years ago, we invited some friends to join us for a few days at the lake.  We had gotten to know Josh and Sarah at church and had become good friends. Our kids seemed to enjoy theirs so the idea of a combined vacation was perfect!  Right!

After several days of non-stop skiing, Dan was exhausted and asked the kids for a breather. "Guys, let me have one day off and I will be set for the rest of the week", he pleaded. Josh immediately volunteered to drive the boat, assuring Dan and the kids that he was an "expert." Doubt spread across the faces of Jered and Danna but since Josh was their only option, they grabbed their life jackets and skis and headed for the boat. Dan grabbed a snack, a cool drink, the novel he had been trying to read all week and headed for the nearest hammock, a gloriously unplanned day to call his own. Actually, it turned out to be a gloriously unplanned hour before we heard our boat returning to the dock. Jered and Danna scrambled out of the boat and headed straight for their dad. I could tell by the look on their faces that the boating excursion had definitely not been a success! "Seriously, Dad, Josh has no idea what he is doing!" Jered explained. "He nearly killed me!" Danna reported with her usual dose of drama. Jered summed up his thirty minute play-by-play account of the disastrous skiing incident by announcing, "Dad, from now on I will only ski when you are driving the boat!"

What Jered was really saying was that he had no confidence or peace when someone besides his father was at the wheel. How true! When God is "at the wheel", every circumstance we face is in His hand and under His control! Peace takes up residence and the power of praise is revealed.

Praise turns trials into faith-builders as we learn to measure our problems against His limitless power, transforming the stumbling blocks of today into stepping stones for tomorrow.

Praise frees us from having to understand our circumstances, knowing that God is in control.  A heart that is filled with praise does not have to understand every detail of the circumstance. In fact, the details really don't matter. What does matter is that God is aware of every minute detail, monitors the circumstance and shapes it to fit His plan.

Praise transforms tragedy into triumph.  Fanny Crosby was six-weeks-old when she lost her vision because of a doctor's error as he applied the wrong medicine to her eyes, a mistake that set the course of the infant's life.  She could have easily become bitter but instead, chose to praise God.  I am certain she didn't understand all of the reasons for her lot in life, but I am equally certain that she made the choice to build a monument of praise on that lot instead of resurrecting a tombstone of bitterness.  Fanny Crosby wrote over 8000 hymns of praise including "All the Way My Savior Leads Me", "Blessed Assurance", and "To God Be the Glory".  Praise made the difference between becoming bitter or better!

I know that many of you have had a tough year!  Loss, disappointment, pain, financial stress ... the list is endless. Go ahead and make that list, my friend. Add it all up. Then factor in the grace, mercy and love of God -- and it is more than enough.  Praise God!

Let's Pray
Father, I give You praise for Your hand in my life this year.  At times, I did not understand what You were doing -- and still don't.  But it doesn't matter, Lord, because I know I can trust You.  Help me remember that my inner heart attitude does not have to reflect my outer circumstances.  No matter what, I can praise You, knowing it will all turn out for my good.  In Jesus' name, Amen.

Now It's Your Turn
Think back over the past year to a time when your faith was tested.  How did you do?  What lesson(s) did you learn through that trial?

Write a prayer of praise to God. Tuck it in your Bible, tape it on your mirror -- put it in an obvious place and refer to it often through the holidays.

Read Romans 8:28.  How does this verse encourage a spirit of thanksgiving and trust?

More From the Girls
Chuck Swindoll says, "The sovereignty of God is the Christian's security blanket."  Thanksgiving is the perfect time for our attitude to reflect that truth.  When I think of who He really is and realize again that He loves me unconditionally, I want to praise Him.  Join me, my friend!  And do not let the holiday stress get to you!  Download my new bible study, God's Answer to Stress, as a gift for a friend or to yourself.

What Now?
Sharon Jaynes

Today's Truth
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him who have been called according to his purpose." (Romans 8:28 NIV)

Friend to Friend
Have you ever had a shattered dream? If so, you're not alone.

If ever there was a group of people who lost their dream, it was Jesus' disciples and the women who ministered to and with them. They had such high expectations that Jesus would be the next political leader of Israel (Luke 24:20).  They had witnessed his power in feeding 5,000 men plus women and children with two loaves and five fishes; they felt the waves beneath their tiny boat subside at his command; they had watched him breathe life into a lifeless child, open the eyes of a man blind from birth, create new skin from rotting flesh on the limbs of lepers, and command a lame man to take up his pallet and walk. They had seen him walk on water, outwit the Pharisees, and win the lost.

In their narrow scope of hopes for a political leader to save the Jews, they missed the bigger picture of God's plan for a Savior to free mankind from the bondage of sin. While Peter realized Jesus' identity ("You are the Christ."), he did not understand His destiny.  Peter was shocked when Jesus explained that He had to go to Jerusalem, suffer, be killed, and on the third day rise from the dead.  He even took Jesus aside and said, "Never, Lord.  This shall never happen to you!" (Mark 8:33).  This was not part of Peter's dream. Suffering did not fit into his plan.

"Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me Satan!  You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."

Call me stupid, but don't call me Satan. Yet, that is how Jesus sees it when we try to block God's plans.  He sees us as an instrument of darkness, an offense, a hindrance and a snare. It is amazing that one minute Peter could be a building block and the next a stumbling block but that's the trap we all fall into when we have our minds set on the world instead of on the things of God.

Jesus told His disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me.  For whoever wants to save his life, will lose it, but whoever lose his life for me will find it." (Matthew 16:24)

Even though Jesus forewarned the disciples of his death and resurrection, they fled when the soldiers came to arrest him, and they hid when he was hung on a cross to die.  When Jesus was sealed in the tomb, their hopes and dreams were sealed in the darkness with him.

Every day, I receive emails from women who have had their dreams shattered.  A husband has an affair, becomes addicted to pornography, abuses the children, or deserts the family.  A child gets caught with drugs, gets pregnant or dies in a car accident. Parents divorce, friends betray, careers come to an abrupt halt.  The list is endless.  So what do we do when our dreams are seemingly destroyed?  The answer to that question will shape the rest of our lives.

Does that mean we give up our dreams?  I can promise you this, whatever dreams you have for your life, God's dreams are greater.  The power of the Holy Spirit the disciples received after Jesus' resurrection, and the impact they made on the world thereafter, was beyond their wildest dreams.  That's what God does with a heart wholly yielded to Him.  That's what He does when we give our shattered dreams to Him. I have learned to stop saying "Why me?" but instead start saying "What now?"

Let's Pray
Dear Lord, there are things about my life that I don't understand, but I do know this.  You are good and You are kind.  I thank You that nothing happens in my life that is a surprise to You.  You have a greater plan than my small vision can imagine.  I pray that You will reveal that larger plan for my life to me.  Help me to pay attention to Your promptings and obey Your bidding.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Now It's Your Turn
Think back over your life and list two or three dreams that did not turn out like you thought they would.

Is there a prayer request or dream in your life that, in retrospect, you are glad God did respond to affirmatively?

Write down any areas of your life where you have said, "Why me?" and are now willing to say,"What now?"

Place yourself in the disciples' sandals for just a moment.  How do you think you would have felt the night Jesus died on the cross?

How do you think you would have felt the day you saw Him walk into the room ... resurrected from the dead?

How would that experience have affected the way you viewed trials in your life from that time forward?

Now, how should that affect the way you see trials today?

Operation Shoebox
Mary Southerland

Today's Truth
James 1:17 (NIV) "Every good action and every perfect gift is from God. These good gifts come down from the Creator of the sun, moon, and stars, who does not change like their shifting shadows."

Friend to Friend
Before you hit the malls and plunge into the Black Friday frenzy, set aside some time to pray, asking God to direct your shopping trip and give you insight as you purchase each gift.  Interesting thought, isn't it?  I have to admit that I tend to plan, think and worry about Christmas gifts more than I pray about them.  However, I recently heard a true story that has changed my perspective on Christmas giving.

Each Christmas, Operation Shoebox collects and sends over eight million shoeboxes stuffed with small gifts such as candy, school supplies, small toys, toothbrushes, soap, and shampoo to children across the world.  In Mexico, hundreds of boys and girls gathered at the church in a small village, excitedly anticipating the arrival of their precious shoeboxes.

Delightful chaos erupted as bulging shoeboxes, wrapped in brightly colored paper and ribbon were passed into the small, eager hands of each child.  Wrapping paper was hurriedly ripped into pieces and tossed aside, a smile spreading across the face of each child as their long awaited Christmas treasures were revealed.

However, one little boy dissolved into tears as he lifted the lid of his box and peered inside to see what he had received for Christmas this year.  One of the Operation Shoebox volunteers spotted the little boy and hurriedly made his way across the church to see what the problem could possibly be.  With the help of an interpreter, the volunteer asked the now sobbing little boy, "What is wrong?  What is in your box?"  With tears streaming down his face, the little boy said, "Socks!"  The worker instantly understood and assured the little boy that he could trade his box of socks for another box that might have crayons or a piece of candy in it.  Alarm spread across the face of the child as he vigorously shook his head and quickly jerked the box away from the now somewhat confused worker.

Clutching the shoebox to his chest, the boy began sobbing out an explanation to the interpreter who listened for a few moments and then, with tears spilling out of his own eyes, turned to the volunteer and said, "You won't believe this!"  Taking a deep, steadying breath, the interpreter explained, "This little boy has a rare skin condition with which he was born.  It seems to affect his feet more than any other part of his body.  The doctors have tried various medications and treatments but finally told the little boy that nothing will work and his feet will never heal unless he begins wearing cotton socks.  His parents cannot even afford food for this boy; much less provide socks for their son.  So, all year long, he has been praying for socks."

Have you ever considered the idea that your Christmas gift may very well be an answer to someone's prayer?  I have to admit that I have rarely, if ever, made a Christmas gift list with that criterion in mind.  Always in a hurry, my first thought is usually how to find the greatest deal at the lowest price in the shortest amount of time with the least amount of effort and hassle at the first store I enter -- and hope the person likes it -- because that is what he or she is going to get.  Ah, yes.  That is certainly the heart of God, isn't it?

Join me in making this Christmas season different.  Do not allow television ads, catalogues or shopping fliers dictate the gifts you give this year.  Turn your Christmas list into a prayer list and you may very well end up giving an "operation shoebox" gift to someone you love.

Let's Pray
Father, I so want to make this Christmas all about You. I pray that the gifts I give this year will be encouraging and truly helpful and not just items checked off of a list or obligations that have been met.  Please direct my thoughts, my heart and my shopping trips. Help me to spend wisely, in a way that pleases and honors You.  Give me Your heart, Lord, and remind me that Christmas really is all about You.

In Jesus' name,
Amen

Now It's Your Turn

Carefully make your Christmas list for this year.
Pray for each person on that list, asking God to give them peace and joy this holiday season.
Consider making gifts instead of buying them.
Give something of special value to you to someone on your list.
Ask God to bless each gift and each recipient.

Which Character Will You Play?
Sharon Jaynes

Today's Truth
"Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.'" (Jeremiah 33:3 NIV)

Friend to Friend
One Saturday night, my family hunkered down on the den sofa with an oversized bowl of popcorn, tall glasses of soda, and an action-packed video: Raider's of the Lost Ark, starring Harrison Ford.  We were ready to be entertained by suspense, intrigue, and a touch of romance.  Like any good movie, there were three principal characters: the good guy, the bad guy, and the damsel in distress.  The good guy, Dr. Indiana Jones, who was a professor of archeology, obtainer of rare antiquities, and student of the world-renowned Dr. Ravenwood of the University of Chicago, quickly charmed us. The bad guy, a waxy-faced Nazi with a sinister grin and breathy laugh, who was always accompanied by an entourage of brutal, salivating, gargantuan, henchmen, quickly appalled us.   Then there was the damsel in distress -- the not-so-fair Marian, daughter of the now deceased Dr. Ravenwood and sole proprietor of a drinking establishment in the snowy mountains of Nepal.

In the opening scene, Dr. Jones is pulled from teaching his archeology class to meet with two agents from U.S. Army Intelligence.  It seems that Hitler is obsesses with religion and the occult and is on a mission to find the whereabouts of the Ark of the Covenant which has been missing since Solomon's temple was destroyed in 586 B.C.  Obviously, the government officials missed a few days in Sunday school, so Dr. Jones fills them in on the significance of this rare treasure.  The Ark contains the Ten Commandments and symbolizes the presence of God.

The government officials explain they have intercepted a German communication that reveals the Nazis are searching for the Ark of the Covenant in Cairo, but in order to determine its exact location, they need a map that is engraved on a gold medallion, once owned by Dr. Ravenwood.  Dr. Jones' mission, should he choose to accept it, is to locate the medallion, uncover the Ark of the Covenant, and bring it safely back to the United States.

Professor Jones, with the gleam of adventure in his eyes, whisks off his bow tie and wire-rim glasses and dons his suede Indiana Jones hat, leather whip, and trusty pistol.  Off he goes to Nepal to find the fair Marian and hopefully, the medallion (which she has been wearing around her neck for years).  Unfortunately for Marian, the waxy-faced Nazi also realizes that she is the key to finding the map and pays her a little visit just before Indiana Jones arrives.  In adventure film fashion, a fight ensues, a fire breaks out, and the damsel's life is in peril.  Just before the blazing walls come crashing down, the spy notices the gold medallion engulfed in flames and hanging from a pole.  Without considering the consequences, he grabs the metal disc from the flames, only to quickly drop it from his hot little hand, but not before it leaves a lasting impression.  One side of the map is forever burned into the palm of his hand.  Of course, Indiana Jones comes to the rescue.  The music soars, the hero cracks his whip, saves the damsel in distress, and recovers the medallion.

The Germans, thinking they have the map in the palm of their hand (actually the palm of Mr. Waxy-Face's hand) start to dig.  But what Professor Jones realizes is that the map is actually on the front and back of the medallion.  The Germans have only half of the map and thus are digging in the wrong place.

Now I have to tell you, this was supposed to be an evening of mindless activity and pure entertainment, but God spoke to me is a big way.  He used this movie to teach me about searching for God's presence, hearing His voice, and how different people go about it.  Many people would like to have the presence of God in their camp.  And just like in the movie, we could potentially play one of three roles.

Some people are like the damsel, who had been wearing the treasure map around her neck for years, but had no idea what it was.  She only wore it because her beloved father had given it to her as a gift.  Likewise, there are those who wear a cross around their neck, but don't truly understand the significance of the gift of sacrifice and salvation from their heavenly Father.  There are others who have a dusty Bible on a crowded bookshelf or displayed on a living room coffee table, but don't realize that it contains God's Words to them.  They don't understand that the Bible is the map to experiencing God's presence and hearing His voice in their daily lives.

Some are like the bad guy with only one side of the medallion burned into the palm of his hand.  They have heard parts of Scripture, read a few verses here and there, or visited a church on Holy Days such as Easter or Christmas.  They are searching for hidden treasure of life, but because they don't understand the whole truth of God, they are digging in the wrong place.

Finally, some are like the heroic Dr. Jones who possessed the whole map and knew exactly where to search for the treasure above all treasure -- The Ark of the Covenant -- the presence of God.  Oh the joy that comes from following God's map...not just parts of it...but all of it.  God has not left us alone to figure out this thing called life on our own.  He speaks to us through the pages of the Bible to tell us great and mighty things we did not know (Jeremiah 33:3).

The movie was over.  My popcorn bowl was empty, but my heart was full. As the credits rolled across the screen, God seemed to say, "There are three principles roles. Which character will you play?"

Let's Pray
Dear Lord, Thank you that You have given us the entire map of where to find the treasure of all treasures...eternal life.  Help us to unfold Your truth all the way, see the entire picture, and not simply look at one panel or one particular part.  Thank You, Lord, for loving us enough to give us a map with such clear directions.  We are looking forward to the day when we reach our final destination and spend eternity with You.

In Jesus' name,
Amen

Now It's Your Turn
In the above devotion, which character do you resemble the most?

Which character would you like to resemble the most?

Do you need to make any adjustments in your life in order to have the map readily accessible in your mind?

If so, what adjustments do you need to make?

Do you know the steps to eternal life by memory?  Pretend that you have met someone and are leading them to a personal relationship with Christ.  Write the verses and the steps down on a piece of paper.

He Took My Place
Mary Southerland

Today's Truth
Psalm 106:1 (NIV) "Praise the LORD. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever."

Friend to Friend
In homes across America, friends and family will gather around beautifully decorated tables filled with warm, scrumptious food to give thanks. It's Thanksgiving Day.  However, this day will be nothing like holidays of the past for many people.

Lonely but committed soldiers covered in the dust of battle will patrol foreign borders, fighting for our freedom while their families back home long for word of their safety.  The homeless will make their way to the nearest soup kitchen, hoping for a warm meal and a smiling face as so many celebrate this day of abundance. An empty place at the table will be a painful reminder of the loved one lost not long ago. A worried husband and dad will sit at the head of the table, wondering how he is going to tell his family that he just lost his job.  The list of wounded hearts and unmet needs is endless.

We convince ourselves that life will be better when we have more money, when we find the right mate, when we get the kids raised or build the right house. We tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together, when we get a nicer car, when we get that promotion, when we are able to go on our dream vacation or when we retire.  We keep trying to find joy, contentment and peace in lifeless places and things.  Jesus Christ is life.  He is Joy and Love and He took our place on the cross.  That's why we can give thanks when it seems as if there is nothing for which to be thankful.

One day, a man went to visit a church.  He arrived early, parked his car, and got out.  Another car pulled up near him, and the driver told him, "I always park there.  You took my place!" The visitor went inside for Sunday School, found an empty seat, and sat down.  A young lady from the church approached him and stated, "That's my seat! You took my place!"  The visitor was somewhat distressed by this rude welcome, but said nothing.

After Sunday School, the visitor went into the church sanctuary and sat down.  Another member walked up to him and said, "That's where I always sit. You took my place!"  The visitor was even more troubled by this treatment, but still said nothing.

Later, as the congregation was praying for Christ to dwell among them, the visitor stood, and his appearance began to change.  Horrible scars became visible on his hands and on his sandaled feet. Someone from the congregation noticed him and called out, "What happened to you?" The visitor replied, "I took your place."

Yes, we live in a broken world and life is filled with pain, challenges, dark times and trials, but today can still be a day of thanksgiving and praise because praise and thanksgiving have little to do with the Thanksgiving holiday and everything to do with our inner attitude toward God. It really doesn't matter how much we lose here, my friend.  I have read the Book and we win ... for all of eternity!  We just need to take the time to remember ... and give thanks.

Let's Pray
Father, we come to You today, praising You for meeting our needs this year in ways that we may or may not have understood at the time. Looking back, we see Your hand of mercy and love.  We recognize Your presence and your power and we celebrate You ...we celebrate life.

In Jesus' name,
Amen.

Sharon, Gwen and I want to wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving Day, a day of remembering all that God is, all that God has and all that He wants to be in your life.
We praise Him for allowing us to do life with you and with each other.
We want you to know that we are with you, on the same journey, here for you,

The Gift That Keeps on Giving
Ginger Plowman

We hope you are enjoying the Girlfriends in God daily devotions.  We (Mary, Sharon, and Gwen) would like to introduce you to some of our special friends.  From time-to-time, the Friday devotions will be written by one of our friends in ministry.  We call them our "Friday Friends."  So grab your Bible and a fresh cup of coffee and drink in the words from our "Friday Friend", Ginger Plowman.  Ginger Plowman, author of Don't Make Me Count to Three and Heaven at Home, speaks at women's events and parenting conferences across the country.

Today's Truth
"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."  Romans 6:23

Friend to Friend
The hustle and bustle of the holiday season finds us all seeking the answer to the same question, "What gifts will I buy for my loved ones this Christmas?"  We rack our brains for just the right items.  Like crazed bloodhounds, we bound from store to store eager to pounce on the perfect presents, ones that will please the receiver without depleting the pocket of the purchaser.  Searching for the ideal gifts can be frustrating.  If we're not careful, the hot pursuit of gift buying can hinder us from celebrating and enjoying the reason for the season.

Determined to find a better way to spend my time, last December I came up with the perfect solution to end my shopping frenzy.  Shrink-wrap.  Allow me to explain how it works.  You simply wrap the clear paper around an item, apply warm air from a hairdryer, and wait as the paper "shrinks" to wrap tightly and flawlessly around the item.  With just a flick of the switch on my hairdryer, I could make used items appear new while cleaning out my closets and attic at the same time.  "Ginger," I said to myself, "you have just revolutionized your holiday season!"

With newly found purpose and determination, I purchased a four dollar ninety-nine cents roll of shrink-wrap and climbed up the attic stairs.  Oh, the treasures I found!  I gleefully ran from box to box as I talked out loud to myself, "The comedy video of Dennis Swanburge would be perfect for Aunt Emily!  Terri Blackstock's suspense book would be just right for my mother-in-law, and my brother would absolutely love the multi-sized wrench set!"  If my arms weren't so short, I would have patted myself on the back.  It was a brilliant plan...or so I thought.

The glitz and glitter of Christmas Day was in full swing.  The stockings were hung by the chimney with care; the fragrances of warm cider, cinnamon, and pine permeated the air; and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas played softly in the background.  Laughter echoed throughout the living room, and hugs were exchanged as we opened our gifts.  A twinge of guilt tugged at my heart as I thought, "Should I feel bad for passing off used items as new? Naaaaa, what better gifts than ones I have personally tested and approved?"  I convinced myself that I had chosen the perfect gifts.

I had almost pulled it off, when suddenly my mother-in law opened the cover of her suspense book. "Hey!" she called out, "This book is signed to Ginger, from Dad!"  The music stopped, and the room grew uncomfortably quiet.  A ball fell off the tree.  So much for my brilliant plan.

While we may find the right size, the right color, and the right price, there is only one perfect gift.  It won't wind up in the attic or at a yard sale, and it lasts forever.  It's the only gift that it is ancient, yet new every day.  The gift of salvation was purchased especially for you by Jesus Christ.  He paid for it with his own life.  All you have to do to receive it is admit that you are a sinner, ask Jesus to forgive you, and surrender your life to Him.

The world offers many gifts that bring temporary satisfaction. Temptations come in neatly wrapped packages with shiny ribbons and enticing bows, but once you have un-wrapped the thin layer of cheap frills, you'll find nothing more than an empty box...and an empty heart.  If you would like to receive the gift that truly keeps on giving, un-wrap the presence of Christ this holiday season.

Let's pray
Lord, help me to put aside my own agenda for this month.  Open my eyes and my heart to see and feel Your presence each day.  May the song of my voice and the meditation of my heart be a sweet aroma of praise and worship to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Now it's your turn
Make a list of everything you have to do this month.  Cross off anything that can be eliminated.  Plan several nights at home with your family.  Ideas include:  reading and discussing the story of the birth of Christ, listening to Christmas music as you play games, sipping cider as you bake holiday treats and addressing Christmas cards for friends and family together.

More from the Girls
This year, I want my family to experience a Christmas season of peace, joy and love.  If I am to lead the way, I have to experience the true meaning of Christmas in my own life.  Let's take inventory:

What does Christmas mean to me?
Am I more concerned with buying presents and preparations than celebrating the birth of Jesus?
Are my children witnessing the real "reason for the season" in my words and actions?
What temporal tasks are hindering me from enjoying the gift of Christ?
How can I lead my children in focusing on Christ this Christmas?
Already feeling the stress?  Check out Mary's website to purchase her book, "Escaping the Stress Trap"  Need gift ideas? Visit Mary's on-line store for books, CDs, and unique stocking stuffers.  Blessings, friend!
