Pay Attention
Sharon Jaynes

Today's Truth
"Listen and hear my voice; pay attention and hear what I say" (Isaiah 28:7 NIV).

Friend To Friend
Every weekday morning, my husband's alarm clock goes off at 5:30.  He gets up, showers, shaves, brushes his teeth, gets dressed, and places his jingling keys in his pocket.  He clears his throat, blows his nose, and well, other noisy things. When he opens and closes the door leading to the garage, the alarm in the bedroom beeps three times... loudly.  This happens every day and I don't hear a thing.  I sleep right through it.  My body has grown so accustomed to his routine that I don't even hear the noise.

We can grow so accustomed to lies that we don't even realize the noise is there.  Our alarm may beep, but we ignore the alert.  Our senses grow dim.

David talked to himself regularly. In one Psalm he wrote, "Awake, my soul!" (Psalm 57:8)  The Hebrew word translated "awake" is used 80 times in the Old Testament.  It means to rouse oneself or stir up.  It could be translated, "Pay attention! Open your eyes!"

We can get used to the lies and not even realize that they are there.  Now it's time to wake up!  Pay attention! Be on the alert! Watch out! Don't be lulled into the hum of Satan's lies about who you are, what you have, and where you are.  "Awake, O my soul!"  To win the war, we must wake up to the battle and become un-desensitized to the lies.

Let me give you another example.  Come sit with me in an airplane just before take off...

Here we go again, I mused as the flight attendant began her routine instructions.  I grabbed the latest copy of Sky Mall magazine tucked in the seat pocket in front of me and began flipping through the pages.  The man to my right continued reading the headlines in the day's paper.  The woman to my left was a first time flyer and paid close attention.

I glanced around the plane and noticed very few people listening to the flight attendant's life saving instructions.  Then it hit me.  The frequent flyers paid little attention, not because we were being rude, but because we had heard it all before.  The safety procedures were routine information.  The hum of the flight attendant's voice merged with the roar of the engine, so we ignored her.

But you better believe that if the pilot announced in mid-flight that a crash landing was imminent, all of us "been there, done that" passengers who did not pay attention to the emergency procedures would all be reviewing those safety instruction cards in the seat pocket in front of us quicker than you could say "buckle your seat belts."

Friend, sometimes in our Girlfriends in God devotions, we review safety instructions that you most likely have heard before, but I want you to read these truths from the Bible as if you are in danger of a crash landing.  We never know when life will hit turbulence. Scrambling for the life jacket and fumbling with the oxygen mask on the way down is not the answer.  We can be prepared so that when the storms of life hit, when the engines fail, when the machine runs out of gas, we'll be ready to land safely on the ground.

As you begin detecting lies in your thought life, look objectively at any thoughts and attitudes that do not line up with Christ's teachings.   When you recognize and expose the lie, you disarm its destructive potential in your life.  Our power depends on believing the truth and I pray that God will open our eyes to the power available to each and every one of us (Ephesians 1:18, 19).

Buckle up!  Let's get ready to fly!

Let's Pray
Father God, open the eyes of my heart that I might know You better.  Help me hear Your voice and see Your handiwork in my life more clearly.  Help me to never get lulled into the rhythm of life and become immune to Your gentle nudges.  I pray Your words will be fresh and new every time I read them. I cry out with the psalmist, David, "Awake my soul!"  I pray that I will be alert to the spiritual workings around me and on guard with the Sword of the Spirit ready to meet whatever comes.

In Jesus' Name,
Amen.

Now It's Your Turn
Pick a familiar passage in the Bible - perhaps Psalm 100, Psalm 23 - or any number of your favorite chapters.  Then pray that God will show you something that you have never seen before in the verses.

More From The Girlfriends
Today's devotion was taken from Sharon's book, I'm Not Good Enough and Other Lies Women Tell Themselves.  We need to pay attention to the lies we tells ourselves, such as I'm not good enough, nobody loves me, I'm a failure, and God doesn't care about me.  We need to replace those lies with liberating truth and begin seeing ourselves as God sees us.  But be warned...this book could change your life!

Never Alone
Mary Southerland

Today's Truth
Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.  Seek his will in all you do, and he will direct your paths."

Friend To Friend
The Bible is filled with miracles where God intervened directly in time and space.

·         Dividing the Red Sea

·         Raising the dead

·         Healing the blind

·         Turning water to wine

God used miracles in a limited world to demonstrate His unlimited power.  It is easy to see Him in the miraculous events of life but I believe God's greatest work is in our everyday lives where He takes the ordinary and uses it to create a magnificent design.  We are experiencing God daily.  We simply don't know how to recognize Him.

I heard about a pastor's young son who came running in the house after playing outside for hours.  His mother took one look at his dirty hands and told him to go wash them carefully.  When the little boy asked why he had to wash his hands, his mother told him that there were germs living in all of that dirt.  The little boy refused and began to complain, "Germs and Jesus!  Germs and Jesus!  That's all I ever hear around this house, and I've never seen either one!"

Just because we can't see God at work doesn't mean He isn't at work.  In fact, God is always at work in our lives. We just need to look for Him.

1.       Look for God in circumstances.

God is constantly at work in our lives preparing us to do what He created us to do.  A.B. Simpson says:  "God is preparing His heroes, and when the opportunity comes, He can fit them into their place in a moment.  And the world will wonder where they came from."  When we understand that God integrates every circumstance to accomplish His will, it is easier to trust Him.  Even when we do not understand, even when we can't explain it, even when it doesn't make sense or seems wrong, we can choose to trust Him.  It is easy to trust God when the seas are calm and the skies are clear, but the strength of our faith is measured in the midst of a storm.

A crisis always reveals what is really inside.  Letting go means that we trust God enough to obey Him.  Trust is demonstrated by obedience and what I do reveals what I believe about God, regardless of what I say.  God will not waste direction on a disobedient heart.  The more we obey, the more we will trust.  The more we trust, the more we will obey.  God reveals His plans to an obedient heart.  When we trust God enough to surrender our will to Him, we will find that He is Lord of our circumstances.

2.  Look for God in people.

Proverbs 27: 17 "As iron sharpens iron, so people can improve each other."

"Each other" literally means "companion or friend; neighbor or associate".  God uses every relationship to improve us and to accomplish His will in us.  People come into our lives for eternal reasons.  Relationships are mirrors.  In them, we see reflections of ourselves.  Relationships expose the weaknesses we try so hard to bury and teach us important lessons like forgiveness, patience, kindness, goodness and self-control.  If we need to learn patience, He brings someone that is irritating.  If we need to learn to love, He will bring the unlovable.  God takes those people we call "difficult" and uses them as pruning tools, tools of molding and refining.  If we fail to learn from one, He will send another.  Even if we do learn from one, He will send another to teach us a different lesson.

3.      Look for God in mistakes.

Romans 8:28 "We know that in everything God works for the good of those who love him. They are the people he called, because that was his plan."

Even the disasters that strike us are intended for our good.  God is in control.  Ivory soap is the "soap that floats" but it wasn't always that way.  Years ago, this soap was just another brand among many -- until a factory foreman made a mistake.  He left a batch of new soap in the cooking vat and went to lunch.  He was late getting back and the soap overcooked. It seemed to clean the same.  It was just lighter.  He could choose to report the mistake, and get fired, or he could make the best of it and ship it out.  The results of the "new" soap surprised everyone. Instead of complaints, the company was deluged with orders for this floating soap and the foreman was promoted.  God often works the same way.  He takes our mistakes and brings good out of them.  If we let Him, God will use the pain of our sin the destruction of our mistakes as the foundation upon which He builds a new life, a better life.  What we call "dis-appointment" is really "His appointment."  God does not waste a single experience.

4.  Look for God in a personal relationship with Him.

John 10:27-28 "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never die, and no one can steal them out of my hand."

The plan of God is revealed through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  We were not created just for time.  We were created for eternity and if we live just for this life, we will miss the ultimate purpose of creation.  When our circumstances don't add up, the people in our lives seem to be clueless and our mistakes make no sense, we can keep coming back to this relationship because we can depend on God to meet every need.  When we know God, His power is credited to our life account.  We could be living in spiritual wealth instead of spiritual bankruptcy.

The story is told of a business man who was selling some warehouse property.  The building had been empty for months.  Vandals had damaged the doors, smashed the windows and trashed the place.  As he showed a prospective buyer the property, he took pains to say that he would replace the broken windows, make any repairs needed and clean it up.  The buyer said, "Forget about the repairs.  When I buy this place, I'm going to build something completely different. I don't want the building.  I just want the site."

God is waiting to work in your life.  You don't have to repair anything or clean up anything. He just wants you and is waiting for you to come ... just as you are.

Let's Pray
Father, I want to see You and know You more.  Please help me to look beyond myself and my own circumstances to see Your hand at work in my life.  Help me remember that You are my source and will supply my every need.  When I make a mistake, help me find a seed of victory in it.  I pray that You will open my eyes and my heart to the people and circumstances around me and help me see You in every part of my life.  Thank You, Lord, for all that You are doing -- now -- in my life.

In Jesus' name,
Amen.

Now It's Your Turn
Read the following bible verses and think of ways each one can be applied to your life.  Then memorize these verses and invite the Holy Spirit to bring them to mind when you need them.

Psalm 33:20 "We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield" (NRV).
2 Corinthians 12:9 "But he said to me, 'My grace is enough for you. When you are weak, my power is made perfect in you'" (ICB).
Psalm 23:1 "The Lord is my Shepherd. I shall not be in want" (NIV).

Holy Adonai
Gwen Smith

Today's Truth
"Then said I, Woe is me! For I am undone and ruined, because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!"  Isaiah 6:5 (Amplified Bible)

Friend To Friend
Have you ever been 'undone' before the LORD?  Have you shaken your head in awe at the mere thought of being accepted as holy in His sight?  The prophet Isaiah experienced God, in all of His splendor, through a vision that left him flat-out speechless.

"In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above Him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another:

"Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty;
the whole earth is full of His glory."

At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. "Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty."  (Isaiah 6:1-5)

I shudder to think how often I approach this awesome, powerful, holy LORD without the reverence that is due Him.  I confess that every fiber of my being should fall before Him and shout, "I am undone!" so much more than I actually do.  Isaiah's response takes us to the place we should be...face down before our holy, royal, heavenly King.

As a worship leader, I often find myself torn between feeling called and feeling unworthy of the call.  The fact of the matter is -- I am unworthy of the call.  I screw up on a regular basis.  I battle enemies like selfishness, anger, indifference, and pride.  I struggle to honor my husband at times and wrestle with shame and guilt more than I'd care to admit.  BUT GOD, through His only Son Jesus Christ, made a way for me to be holy and acceptable in His sight.

With the weight of this in mind, I was inspired to write the following worship song: (Adonai is a Hebrew name for God meaning "Master, Lord, LORD, or owner.")

Holy Adonai
Words and Music by Gwen Smith

Majesty
Mighty King
You are God
Everything

Holy One
Father, Son
Matchless Lord
We're undone

You are the One deserving praise
You are the Lord of all my days
You are the royal King of Kings
The only reason we can sing

You rule in splendor from your throne
Within Your grace our hope is known
You are the God who reigns on high
Holy Adonai

You are holy, holy
You are worthy, worthy, worthy, worthy!

My dear friend, I can't help but join the heavenly creatures as I shout from my home in North Carolina to you across the globe: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory."  As you read this devotion in Maine, Florida, Texas, Idaho, California, Indiana, Brazil, Guatemala, Germany, India, Uganda, Croatia, Australia, China or Norway.  In whatever city, whatever state, whatever country you reside, would you join heaven's song and lift the name of the LORD high today as a united body of sisters?  Let us be 'undone' together and bow before our King with a renewed awe of His greatness. He is worthy!

Let's Pray
Most Holy Father, Adonai, I pray that You would forgive me for all the times that I have come into Your presence lacking reverence.  You are worthy of all praise!  May You become greater in my life and may I become less.  Empower me to live a life that points to your glorious splendor.

In the matchless name of my risen Savior Jesus Christ,
Amen

Now It's Your Turn
Read Psalm 103

Take a few moments to hum or sing a favorite worship song that focuses on awesomeness of God.  (Here are some suggestions:  "I Exalt Thee" -- "Heart of Worship" -- "How Great Is Our God" -- "How Great Thou Art" -- "Fairest Lord Jesus" -- "Doxology")

Do you feel unworthy to approach God's throne this morning?  His love is unconditional and His grace extends beyond anything you have done because of Jesus.  He is waiting with open arms to embrace you right now.  Go to Him!

What's in a Name?
Sharon Jaynes

Today's Truth
"Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my territory!  Let your hand be with me and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain" (1 Chronicles 4:10 NIV).

Friend to Friend
Most likely you have heard about one man's little prayer tucked in 1 Chronicles 4.  His name is Jabez, and his name means "pain."  I don't know if it was a lapse in judgment or just plain meanness, but when Jabez was born, his momma was not a happy woman.  She bore this boy in pain and wanted to make sure he never forgot it.  So, she named him...Pain.  All his life, Jabez had to live under the cloud that he had caused his mother great pain.

Maybe you have echoes in your memory of your mother reminding you that you were a pain.  "You are such a pain."  "You cause me pain." "You are a bother."  "I sacrificed so much for you and you don't even appreciate it."  But you know what? Even if someone has made you feel like you were a royal pain that does not make it true.  God would beg to differ.  He absolutely adores you.  He loves you so much that He even gave His only Son so that you could spend eternity with Him.  We don't do that for people who are a pain.  On the contrary, we don't want to spend a minute with them...much less an eternity.

Let's go back to Jabez for a moment.  What did he do about the name he had been given?  He prayed.  He decided he was not going to let someone's estimation of him or the label his mother had placed on him, rule him for the rest of his life. Jabez cried out to God. "Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my territory!  Let your hand be with me and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain."

1 Chronicles 4:9 tells us that Jabez was honorable -- more honorable than all his brothers.  This was not a self-seeking prayer.  He just wanted to be free of the label that had been slapped on him by his momma, and be loved by the God who could slap a blessing on his heart.

Perhaps you need to renounce a few names that have plagued you for years.

            "You're no good."

            "You're not a good daughter."

            "You're irresponsible."

"You don't care about anybody but yourself."

            "You're just like your father."

            "You're so selfish."

Visualize whatever label you've allowed, to be written on a name tag.  Now, visualize Jesus walking up to you and pulling that name tag off your chest, crumpling it up, and throwing it in the trash.

Now visualize Jesus picking up a permanent marker and writing your new name on your heart.

            New creation (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Salt of the earth (Matthew 5:13)

Light of the world (Matthew 5:14)

            Child of God (John 1:12)

            Righteous and holy (Ephesians 4:24)

That's who you really are -- and don't let anyone tell you any different!

Oh, and what of Jabez's request? "And God granted him what he requested" (1 Chronicles 4:10).

Let's Pray
Dear Lord, Thank You for giving me a new name!  I pray that I will no longer remember the names that I have been called in the past. This one thing I do...forgetting what lies behind and pressing forward to what lies ahead.  I run the race with a new name...the one that you have given me...dearly loved precious child.

In Jesus' Name,
Amen.

Now It's Your Turn
Make a name tag with one of the above verses.  Consider wearing it under a sweater or jacket for an entire day.

Look up the following verses and note what they say about who you are in Christ.

John 15:15

John 15:16

Romans 6:18

Romans 8:14,15

I Corinthians 3:16

I Corinthians 6:17

I Corinthians 12: 27

2 Corinthians 5:18, 19

Whose opinion is more important to you and whose estimation is more correct -- the people in your past or the God who made you?  Whom are you going to believe?

The Fight for Freedom
Mary Southerland

Today's Truth
Galatians 5:1 (NIV) "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery."

Friend To Friend
I rarely watch television but have, in recent days, been drawn to the coverage of our troops who are fighting on foreign soil.  It is a stunning sight to see the diligence and courage displayed by these men and women as they march relentlessly toward their objective ... freedom for those who are prisoners of an evil regime.  All along the way, these freedom fighters have encountered major obstacles and unexpected attacks.  Still they move forward.  The plan is in place and these determined soldiers let nothing and no one deter them from their goal.

You and I fight a war every single day. Our Father created us for freedom, but we constantly give up ground to the enemy through an old habit, a wrong attitude or a defiant action.  Still, the Holy Spirit marches relentlessly through our lives with one goal in mind, total freedom for the precious child of God. It is amazing how many times I offer Him few weapons with which to fight. I have placed little or no truth in my heart and mind.  My shield of faith has been tossed aside. Sin has tarnished the breastplate of righteousness. I am a pitiful warrior who has gone into battle with few weapons and little preparation.

I remember watching the people of Iraq bring down the statue of Saddam Hussein.  God pierced my heart with the truth that there are things in my own life that need to be grabbed by the throat and brought to His feet in complete surrender.  Then, and only then, will I experience the freedom for which He created me.  I am so very grateful that I serve a God who is wholly committed to me and to His plan for my life - even when I am not wholly committed to Him.

We are living in uncertain times.  War and rumors of war fill the media.  The economy shows little sign of improvement.  Countless homes are in crisis, reeling from the devastation of an affair, a child in trouble or the familiar and suffocating weight of apathy.  It seems that everywhere we turn, we see a pile of broken dreams and wounded lives.  Some of you are dealing with a great sense of loss that has left you paralyzed and helpless in the darkness.  It is almost as if the winds of Hell itself are blowing through your life and the storm is raging out of control.  Fear has been waiting in the wings of your circumstances for the opportunity to take center stage in your heart and mind. Direction seems unsure at best and the pathway is filled with obstacles and hidden dangers.

We are living in extraordinary times that call for extraordinary faith. Our Father is not surprised by the events of our life nor is He unaware of our struggles.  Each and every one of them must pass through His hands and came to us with His permission.  Trust Him.  Abandon yourself to Him in childlike faith, knowing that no matter how you feel, no matter what you see - He is in control.  Choose to give Him praise now - when the skies are dark and the winds are blowing.  And when the storm is over, you will see the evidence of His hand and heart at work in your life.

Lift up your head and turn your heart toward home where your Father waits to gather you into His arms. Put your trust in God and keep your eyes fixed on Him, the author and finisher of your faith.  Choose to believe what you cannot see and refuse to depend upon what you can understand or explain.  Stand firm, knowing that freedom is yours today

Today, my friend, raise His banner high over your life, declaring that the King is in residence.  Throw off everything that would hinder His work in your life.  Rejoice in the truth that He has come to deliver you from bondage and to set you free.

Let's Pray
Father, thank You for the freedom You offer each one of us when we come to You in a personal relationship.  Give us the courage to stand firm in Your truth, Lord.  Fill our heart with Your truth and wisdom so that others may see You above all else.  Thank You for the men and women who fight today so that we can experience the freedom of our country.  Please keep them safe, strong, and encouraged.  Remind us to pray for them, Lord, as they stand in our place.  And thank You, Father, for the freedom You offer through Your son, Jesus Christ.

In Jesus' name,
Amen.

Now It's Your Turn
Read the following verses and think about how these truths can set you free.

Ÿ         Hebrews 11:1 (NKJV) "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

Ÿ         Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT) "Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will direct your paths."

Ÿ         Proverbs 4:25 (NCV) "Keep your eyes focused on what is right, and look straight ahead to what is good."

What one obstacle is standing in your way of God's freedom in your life?  What step do you need to take in order to walk in freedom?

More From The Girlfriends
I am sure most of you heard about the sandstorm followed by drenching rain during the first days of the war with Iraq.  Some say it was the worst in over a hundred years.  Our troops were bogged down and could not move effectively. The media was already wondering if the troops were in a "quagmire" and dire predictions of gloom and doom came from the left wing media.  But what they failed to report was that after the weather had cleared, the Marine group that was mired the worst looked out at the plain they were about to cross. They were shocked at what they saw!  Hundreds, if not thousands of anti-tank and anti-personnel mines were uncovered by the wind and then washed off by the rain. If they had proceeded as planned, many lives would have undoubtedly been lost. As it was, they simply drove around them and let the demolition teams destroy them.

Do not despair!  No matter where you are or what you are facing, take hold of the eternal and steadfast truth that you can trust your God!   His grace is enough and His love is certain.  For encouragement during discouraging times, enroll in Mary's online bible study, Light for the Journey. It's Not About Me
Sharon Jaynes

Today's Truth
"Let them praise the name of the LORD, for his name alone is exalted; his splendor is above the earth and the heavens" Psalm 148:13.

Friend To Friend
Some of my Girlfriends in God are not going to like this devotion.  I'm not even sure I do, but I'm going to put it out there anyway.  During the month of February, I write devotions on marriage.  It is the month of love, and marriages certainly are in shambles all around the world.  Each February, I am flooded with e-mails:  some are appreciative for the reminders on how to love their husbands; some are hurting because they are in their own struggling marriage, and some are broken hearted because of shattered dreams. These women are so thankful for the balm of God's truth in a very tender area of their lives.  However, I also receive lots of e-mails from women who are not married, who do not like the attention to marriage at all.  They are flat out angry and frustrated because the devotions do not pertain to them.  The same types of complaints come during the month of May when I write about Motherhood.

I've seen the same thing in church.  "I didn't like that sermon."  "I didn't like the singing today." "I couldn't relate to that teaching." And on and on we go.  You know what I've discovered...It's not about me.  It is all about God.  If the pastor is preaching on a topic that is not my struggle, I pray that God will open my eyes to new truths that I've never seen.  If he is talking about losing a loved one, I pray for those who have lost a loved one recently...even though that not might not be my struggle at that particular time.  Is the teaching on raising young children?  I have a grown son, so I pray for those who are in the throes of raising the next generation.

One Sunday, I was singing in church.  Barely singing, I might add.  It was a dry old hymn and I just wasn't into it.  Then I looked at an older women a few seats down and she had tears trickling down her wrinkled face.  She was moved to tears by that old hymn and was taken to the throne room of grace. "Oh Father," I prayed.  "Please forgive me.  This is not about me.  It's not about what I like or dislike.  It is all about You.  Truth is truth.  Worship is worship.  Help my focus be on You and You alone.  It's not about me.

Listen to how David focused on God during worship:

"Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge." Psalm 62:5-8

"Teach me your ways, O LORD, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever." Psalm 86:1112

So let's commit to remember together...it's not about me.  It's all about God.

Let's Pray
Dear Lord, please forgive me when I make worship and Bible study all about me.  The purpose of my worship is to give glory to You and You alone, not to make me feel better.  The purpose of Bible study is to learn what Your Word has to say about Your character and Your ways and to discover the truths that lead me into the way of righteousness.  I praise You!  I thank You!  I worship You!

In Jesus' Name,
Amen

Now It's Your Turn
Here is a fun exercise.  Go back and pick out one of your favorite chapters in the Bible.  Now, focus on the verses that you DID NOT underline.

Here is a wonderful Psalm to use for your extended prayer time today.  Open your Bible to Psalm 136 and pray that prayer of praise with David.  Don't skip over the repeated refrains...His love endures forever!  He repeats it for a reason.  David meant it.  God wants us to get it!

Today's Truth
"You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart" (Jeremiah 29:13, NIV).

Friend to Friend
"Preston!  We give up!  Come out from where you are hiding!"  My kids were playing hide and go seek a few years ago while my husband and I were upstairs packing for a trip.  Hunter and Kennedy had looked everywhere they could think of for their sly older brother, but couldn't find him.  Reluctantly, they gave up.  As I packed, I checked some choice spots in my walk-in closet to see if I could catch a glimpse of the victorious hider.  Nothing.

Several minutes later, as I was loading toiletries into my travel case, the cabinet door beneath my husband's sink slowly opened. My contortionist son quietly and carefully crawled out from underneath the bathroom sink.  He glanced my way, and with a twinkle in his eye said: "Hey mom."

"Honey!  Your brother and sister asked you to show yourself 10 minutes ago.  Why did you stay in there so long?"  I inquired.

To which he replied in a hushed tone, "I didn't want them to know where my favorite hiding spot was!"

I have to admit, I was impressed with his hiding strategy.  Seemed pretty savvy for a 10 year-old.  He just didn't want to be found.

In the game of life, God never hides. To the contrary, He wants to be found. He is always with us and always sees us.  We are fearfully and wonderfully made by the hands of One who knows everything about us.  He designed us to know and to find Him.  And let's be honest girls -- whether we want to admit it or not, deep inside we all want to be known and loved.

In Psalm 139, David penned sacred words that paint an amazing picture of God's stubborn presence in our lives:

"Where can I go from Your Spirit?  Where can I flee from Your presence?  If I go up to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in the depths, You are there.  If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there Your hand will guide me, Your right hand will hold me fast." (Psalm 139: 7-10, NIV)

Have you ever felt hidden from God?  I can assure you today, that you are not.  He sees you.  No matter where you are.  No matter what you have been through.  No matter what you are going through. You are not alone.  God knows you.  God loves you.  He wants to be found by you.  One of the richest blessings in life is the privilege we have to know Him.  Call on Him today and find Him through prayer.

Let's Pray
Heavenly Father, It is so comforting to know that You are constantly with me.  That You know exactly where I am and what I face.  Please hold me fast with Your right hand and guide each moment of my day.  I love You, Lord.

In Jesus' Name I pray,
Amen.

Now It's Your Turn
Read Romans 8:35-39.

Nothing can separate us from God's presence and His love, but sin can hinder our intimacy.  Ask God to search your heart and reveal and remove any sin.

What is your hiding strategy?   Do you sometimes run from God's presence?  Why?  Grapple with this one.  Ask the LORD for insight.

More From The Girlfriends
Hey friend.  After moving across the country a few years back, I experienced a dark season where I just didn't FEEL God's presence. My mind knew He was present, but my heart felt disconnected. Thankfully, God's presence isn't about our feelings. He is always with us.  In that time, I penned a song called Comfort Sonata, which is the final track on my Because CD. I uploaded Comfort Sonata to my Facebook Music Page in case you want to listen to it. J

God Sense vs. Common Sense
Sharon Jaynes

Today's Truth
"The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple" (Psalm 19:7 NIV).

Friend To Friend
Sitting in my backyard, I love to listen to the sounds of all God's critters: birds, crickets, frogs, katydids, woodpeckers, and most of all -- children.  Framing our yard from every side, children's giggles, chatter, and raucous play are a symphony of stringed instruments and percussions alike.  There's the rhythmic thumping of a basketball bouncing on concrete, the squealing of little girls being chased by boys, the skidding of bicycles tires on asphalt, the popping of a cap gun, declarations of "you're it" and contentions of "you cheated."  All blend together in the symphony of youth.  Of course the orchestra would not be complete without the reprimanding of parents breaking up fights and reminding stubborn wills of house rules.

Rules, rules, rules.  What a bother -- especially when you are five-years-old.  When I was five, I never understood why parents had to interfere and ruin all the fun with rules.  I eventually decided it was just part of their job description.  Parent: law enforcement officer who patrols the neighborhood, ruining all the fun for little girls and boys.

As a five-year-old Tom Boy, my favorite possession was a pink sparkly bicycle with a silver glittery banana seat and u-shaped handle bars.  Streamers were attached to the ends of the handles and blew in the breeze as I peddled around the neighborhood at breakneck speed.  I could leave skid marks as long as any old boy, balance without holding onto the handlebars, and do "wheelies" with my front tire saluting the air.  Oh how I loved to ride around the race track (otherwise known as Pine Haven Drive) feeling the wind whip through my ash blond streaked hair and brush past my bare chest.  It was the "bare chest" part that was the problem.

"Sharon Ann Edwards," my mother would call from the front porch.  "Get in the house this minute and put on a shirt!"

"I don't want to war a shirt," I whined.  "Stewart doesn't have to wear a shirt.  Why do I?"

"Because you're a girl and because I said so.  That's why."

My brother was five years my senior and he often romped around without a shirt.  As far as I could tell, there wasn't any difference between him and me.  So why did people snicker when I rode past them without a shirt on?  I just didn't get it.  So begrudgingly, I'd knock down my kickstand, stomp through the house, and pull on a t-shirt, mumbling all the way.

This was not a onetime incident, and my mother tired of making me dress like a girl.  But then something amazing happed.  I entered first grade.  Suddenly something clicked and I noticed that boys and girls were indeed different.  It all started with Isaac Thorp and his big blue eyes.  Well, mom never had to tell me to keep my shirt on again.

Rules -- what a bother.  Rules -- what a comfort.  Eventually, I learned that even if I didn't completely understand one of my parents' rules, it would usually made sense later.  And you know what?  It's just like that with my heavenly Father. If I don't understand one of His rules or commands, it usually makes sense later.  If He tells me "no," I've come to understand that it is for my own good. God's principles are not randomly contrived to ruin our fun.  They are meticulously thought out and created to protect His children.  God is a lot smarter than we are.  Have you noticed that?  "Because I said, so," is all the explanation I need from God.  Perhaps I'll figure out the reasons later -- but I may not.  If I don't, I just need to remember that Father knows best.

Let's Pray
Dear Lord, Thank you that You do not set up rules for us just to ruin our fun but to provide our protection.  Help us to stay within the confines of the safe boundaries you have laid out for us in the Bible.  Help us to obey even when we do not understand. Help us to be satisfied with "Because I said so," when it comes from You.

In Jesus' Name,
Amen

Now It's Your Turn
Write down a "rule" that your parents enforced that you did not understand at the time.

Now, as an adult, write down the wisdom of that rule and how it protected you.

If you have children, note any rules that you have set up that they do not understand.  Do you see a similar parallel between your wisdom as a parent and God's wisdom as your parent?

Now, here's more of today's truth:

"The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul.
The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple.
The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.
The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever.
The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous.
They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb.  By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward." (Psalm 19:7-11 NIV).

The Big Picture
Mary Southerland

Today's Truth
Romans 12:4-5 "Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function; so in Christ we who are many form one body" (NIV).

Friend To Friend
In order to prevent pride, we must be Kingdom people, people who see the big picture.  Instead, we tend to have tunnel vision and are usually concerned only with what affects us. After all, it really is so about us -- right?  What an easy and convenient way of thinking.  It seems so logical and is definitely a less demanding way of life.  But in doing so, we lose sight of God's Kingdom plan and purpose.

Every believer has a gift that is meant to help the body of Christ grow and achieve balance -- every believer including those sandpaper believers.  You know exactly who I am talking about - those people who drive you nuts, push your buttons and then sit beside you in the worship service, singing the praise songs at the top of their voices.  I have discovered that God uses these difficult relationships to keep my heart, mind and life focused on the big picture -- His picture.

When living in Fort Lauderdale, our neighbors had a pool that we all enjoyed on those relentlessly brutal, hot and humid summer days.  At first, I lamented the fact that we could not afford to have a pool but after watching my neighbor deal with the maintenance of his, I decided I had the best of both worlds.

It seemed as if every time I turned around, he was either going to or returning from the pool supply store. Maintaining the right level of chemicals seemed to be an almost impossible task. My neighbor fought the battle well, but still, the recurrent and slimy algae taxed his patience and checkbook.  Finally, after several bouts with the green slime, now his relentless, formidable foe, my neighbor surrendered, hiring a professional pool service to do the job. Success resulted and the pool stayed beautiful and algae-free because of the right chemical balance.

Balance is hard to maintain -- in swimming pools, in churches and in relationships -- especially those relationships with sandpaper people, those people who rub us the wrong way.  For the church and the relationships within the church to be balanced, every believer must function according to his or her God-given gifts.  That is the plan.

"A spiritual gift is given to each of us as a means of helping the entire church."
(1 Corinthians 12:7 NLT)

Spiritual gifts are neither toys nor weapons but rather tools that the Lord has placed in our hands to use in building the Kingdom of God.  When we focus on the gift instead of the Giver, we are missing the big picture, the kingdom picture, and will find it easy to become a prisoner of pride, thinking that we have arrived and are more spiritual than others. Pride destroys unity and sets itself up against God, a very dangerous place to be.

Every gift, every believer and every relationship is important and has a unique purpose in the Kingdom. God is all about relationships.  The very fact that He moved Heaven and Earth in order to make a relationship possible between God and man is nothing short of miraculous.

We may believe that our sandpaper person has little or nothing to offer in the way of serving God but scripture is clear that if they are believers, they are part of the plan and are gifted for service.  I know -- it just doesn't seem possible, does it?  To think that someone like my sandpaper person could be used in Kingdom work just as God chooses to use me just seems so unfair.  But Romans 8:28 is either true or false when it says that "all" things work together for our good.  To propose any other interpretation of that principle is to negate the Word of God.  It is true that God uses all life offers, the good and bad circumstances as well as the difficult and easy relationships to work good in our lives and in His Kingdom.

Sandpaper people need to know that the ground at the foot of the cross is level and that whose they are matters more than who they are. Our own pride keeps us from seeing those abrasive people as God sees them, and loving them as God loves them.  We need to choose God's perspective of difficult people, knowing that His grace covers them just as it covers us and that we are all part of God's big picture.

Let's Pray
Lord, I ask that You would help me to keep Your big picture in mind when it comes to my relationships and the part they play in Your Kingdom work.  I don't want to be divisive, Lord.  I want to be an instrument of peace, loving even those who drive me nuts!  Help me to serve with joy...in love.  Use me to illustrate Your love to those who feel unloved.  Help me wage peace instead of allowing my selfish and prideful attitudes control my behavior.  I love You and thank You for the amazing privilege of being Your child and of serving You.

In Jesus' name,
Amen.

Now It's Your Turn

Identify those "sandpaper people" in your life and in your church.
What has been your attitude toward them in the past?
What changes do you need to make in how you treat those difficult people and how you encourage them to use their gifts in service?
Make a plan this week to encourage one difficult person in their service to God.
Pray for that person every day this week and then examine the changes God makes in your heart.

More From The Girlfriends
I have to admit that for every problem, I have an opinion and a solution.  Really!  If I could rule the world, I am certain that I could solve a whole lot of problems in a hurry!  Sounds like pride, doesn't it?  Only because it is!  I really believe God allows certain people to come into my life in order to break my pride and to remind me of God's amazing grace that allows me to live, breathe and serve. I pray that you and I will, day by day, moment by moment, focus on the big picture of a tiny baby in a manger, a cruel cross, an empty tomb and a coming King!

Does It Really Matter?
Mary Southerland

Today's Truth
John 15:13 "Greater love has no one than this; that one lay down his life for his friends" (NIV).

Friend To Friend
A young man who had been raised as an atheist was training to be an Olympic diver. The only religious influence in his life came from his outspoken Christian friend. The young diver never really paid much attention to his friend's sermons, but he heard them often.

One night, the diver went to the indoor pool at the college he attended. The lights were all off, but since the pool had big skylights and the moon was bright, there was plenty of light for practice. The young man climbed up to the highest diving board and turned his back to the pool on the edge of the board, arms extended outward.  It was then that he saw his shadow on the wall. The shadow of his body was in the shape of a cross. The man felt as if someone was speaking to him.  The words of his Christian friend filled his mind. In his heart, he suddenly realized the truth.  Instead of diving, he knelt down and finally asked God to come into his life.  As the young transformed diver stood to his feet, a maintenance man walked in and turned on the lights. The pool had been drained for repairs.

I often wonder how many desperate people cross my path each day; people who are one step away from certain destruction; people whose very life direction can be changed by the Light of God in and through my interaction with them.

If you are like me, every day is crammed full of tasks, errands, deadlines, demands and activities.  I run headlong through each twenty-four hours from the minute my feet hit the floor until I crawl into bed each night.  It is in those quiet moments before sleep that I hear Him ask, "Did you make a difference today? Is someone closer to the Light because you told them about what I have done in your life? Did you recognize that "intruder" or "interruption" as a divine appointment from Me instead of an inconvenience? Does what you did today really matter?"

Sadly, I have to confess that many times I miss opportunities to participate in eternal business because I am so focused on earthly business. My agenda becomes my god and time management my idol.  I could have been "God with skin on" to the frustrated cashier at the grocery store instead of brushing her aside because I was in a hurry to do something I deemed more important. I could have blessed the friend who called, needing an encouraging word, instead of preaching an unsolicited sermon in the name of compassion.  I could have taken a few more minutes to listen when the elderly man struck up a conversation with me at the gas pump, instead of walking away, leaving him just as lonely as he was when we met.

Jesus did things differently. With every breath, He was aware of the hurting and wounded, pursuing the broken people instead of avoiding them. Jesus carefully and deliberately invested every moment of His time on earth in eternal things.  And there has never been a life that made such a difference or mattered so much!

I want my life to really count, don't you?  We are never more like God than when we are reaching out in love to meet a need, comfort a broken heart, encourage a weary soul or challenge the darkness with His Light!  On your journey today, look for those desperate ones who need you to be God with skin on!

Let's Pray
Father God, I confess to You that I am often too busy to hear Your voice or determine Your direction for my life.  Please forgive me for being self-centered.  Help me to see those who cross my path as You see them. Help me to love them with Your love, drawing them from the darkness into the Light.

In Jesus' name,
Amen.

Now It's Your Turn

Ÿ         What keeps you from recognizing the need in others and then reaching out to meet that need?

Ÿ         Think back to a time when someone reached out to you. What was your response?  How did their action change your life?

Ÿ         What difference can an awareness of hurting people make in your daily walk?

Ÿ         Identify one person in need today and look for a specific and timely way to meet that need.

More From The Girlfriends
I know this truth is hard to put into action.  It is so much easier to just close our eyes to a need, turn away from hurting people and grieve the heart of God.  I challenge you to step out in faith and allow God to work in and through you.
