Why Frank, I am certainly surprised that it wasn't blamed on Nancy Pelosi!  :D :D
it couldn't have been pelosi, she was too busy and concerned with stopping a important energy bill from being voted on and promoting her new flop of a book.

Unfortunately we will have to go in and throw them out, rebuild rep of Georgias defense capability and this time we'll end up giving them weapons that can defend them along with probability of military base there.

They asked us for help.  Do we want to ignore them and take the risk of the USSR forming again?

He's KGB.  Always has been.  The problem is people got this warm fuzzy feelin when the soviet union collapsed and forgot that russia has never been a ally.  They have always kept the regime alive.

Georgia is a tiny country with limited internal resources, Pam.  Picture the state of New York, wiped clean.  What does it have going for it?  The same thing Georgia has: a seaport and some wealthy neighbors (somehow, in this scenario, the role of Russia will be played by modern-day Connecticut.  Bear with me anyway, yes?).  So Georgia has set itself up, in recent years, as a through-way for two major oil pipelines.

Oh-ho... OIL, did you say?  Black gold?  Iraqi tea?  Yep, Pam, that's what I mean.  So suddenly, Georgia is important, right?  It's strategically and financially important, because it is a country through which our coveted oil travels.

It gets better....  Georgia is also heavily invested in becoming a Westernized state.  It's applied for NATO and is expected to become a full member next year, it's a member of many European trade groups, and the current president has even said he wants to put Georgia on the path to membership in the EU....(UGH)   Using the New York metaphor again, this is the equivalent of Manhattan planting palm trees and inviting movie studios over for tea.  Georgia wants to be western very, very badly.  They have even renamed the road leading to their airport "George W. Bush Avenue," in honor of the president's visit last year.

Anyway, Georgia wants to be in NATO.  As part of its effort on this, the government has worked to build up its military -- by hiring U.S. trainers. To repay that favor, they've sent some of those well-trained troops (2,000 to 3,000) down to Iraq where (until this week) they had the third-largest contingent of troops on the ground, behind the U.S. and Great Britain.

We should care, selfishly, about Georgia and Russia being at war because we are right now failing Georgia, our fledgling military pal.  Yes, Georgia is not innocent in everything that's happened here; South Ossetia is a semi-autonomous region that's wanted to be back in Russian control for a while, and has found itself stymied in any attempt to move that way and even harassed by the government.  But the critical thing to note, is that Georgia has admitted to all of that.  It has said, we're beaten, we'll give South Ossetia back, and Russia has advanced anyway.  This country has been attacked; it's been invaded; it's asked for a cease fire and is still facing bombings of its major cities.  Some reports have said that Russia may have as its goal the removal of Georgia's pro-America president, which should send some chills down spines put together in the Cold War Era.  How this all plays out over the next few days is going to be very interesting.
