Linnaeus O. Oakleaf, 87, of Mound Valley, Kansas died Thursday at Cherryvale Care Center, Cherryvale, Kansas.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Potts Chapel of Independence, Kansas.

Memorials are suggested to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and may be left with the funeral home.

Mr. Oakleaf was born June 16, 1920, in Mound Valley, to Orton and Helena (Read) Oakleaf.  He grew up in Mound Valley and graduated from Labette Community High School in 1938.

On Feb. 15, 1942, he married Mable Umbarger, in Wichita, and she survives.

He entered the United States Army Air Corps in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1946.  

He worked as a farmer until 1966 when he became an insurance agent for 18 years.  He also worked for the Rural Water District in maintenance.

Mr. Oakleaf was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, AARP and the VFW.

Other survivors include a daughter, JoLynn Slaughter, Silver City, N.M.; two sons, Samuel Oakleaf, Howard, and Karl Oakleaf, Claremore, Okla.; a brother, Charles Oakleaf, Hot Springs, Ark.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

MOUND VALLEY - Linnaeus Orton Oakleaf, 87, died January 17, 2008.  Survivors:  wife, Mable; daughter, JoLynn Slaughter of Silver City, N.M.; sons, Sam of Howard, Karl of Claremore, Oklahoma; 2 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; brother, Charles of Hot Spirngs, Arkansas.  Potts Chapel, Independence.
