The last U.S. military mounted cavalry charge took place in the Philippines in 1942 when 800 plus men of the 26th Cavalry Regiment charged a Japanese infantry force.

The last time U.S. soldiers went into battle on horseback was in the Afghanistan Taliban War in 2001.

Custer's 7th Cavalry Regiment organized at Fort Riley, Kansas, in 1866 is still on active duty in the U.S. Army, and is part of the 1st Cavalry Division. The 7th fought in Vietnam and both Iraqi wars. Units of the 7th are scattered at one post in Korea, two Texas posts, and a post in Georgia.
