Edith L. Oakes, age 84, of Clarksville, Tennesse, passed away on May 19, 2024.  She was born in Kansas City, Missouri to James A. and Roberta (Sloan) Carter in 1939.

Edith grew up in Howard, Kansas and graduated from Howard High School with the class of 1957.  She married Larry Oakes in 1964.  He was a career soldier and a highly-decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, retiring as a Command Sergeant Major in 1989. Edith and Larry were married for 39 years until his death in 2003.

Edith was employed as an Administrative Assistant for the United States Army.  She worked for over 20 years serving in several Army posts until her retirement from Fort Campbell, Kentucky.  She was a devout member of the Hilldale Methodist Church where she was a member of the choir, women's group, and The Golden Nuggets.  She was also a member of the Clarksville Civitan Club and the Red Hat Society.  She spent many hours volunteering for community service through the Civitan Club. 

Edith enjoyed life and always had a smile to share.  She loved Bible studies, playing card games, and Bingo.  She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Edith is survived by nephews, Rob (Gina) Greenwood, Steven (Rochelle) Greenwood, and David Greenwood and great-nephews and nieces. She was preceded by her husband, Larry; her parents, Jim and Roberta Carter; and her sister and brother-in-law, Bob and Barbara Greenwood.

A graveside service will be held on June 10, 2024 at Greenwood Cemetery in Clarksville, Tennessee.  A memorial has been established to the Dementia Society of American in memory of Edith.   Contributions may be sent to McReynolds-Nave and Larson Funeral Home, 1209 Madison Street, Clarksville, Tennessee 37040.   Online condolences may be made online at Navefuneralhomes.com.
