GEORGE SHIPLEY LAID TO REST

Passed Away Saturday Evening After Ten Days Illness


Longton News:  One of the oldest and most respected citizens passed away at 10:30 last Saturday evening when George H. Shipley bade farewell to family and friends and stepped "over the river" to await their coming.

Mr. Shipley had been sick but a short time and said "I am just worn out; I have done all I can do in this world, and am ready to go.  I am not afraid to die."  That is a wonderful sermon to leave.

George H. Shipley, son of Joel and Amy Shipley, was born in Henry county, Missouri, June 23rd, 1848 and departed this life August 24, 1929, at the age of 81 years, two months and one day, at the farm where he had lived for fifty-six years.

He was married in 1877 to Miss Caroline Cook and to this union were born five children; Samuel W. of Longton, Kansas, Carrie and Charles of Halkirk, Alberta Canada; Mrs. Dolllie Roth of Emporia, Kansas, and George who died at the age of seven.  His wife died March 1, 1886.

He was married to Mrs. Sarah Munyon in 1889 and to them were born Frank of Elkhart, Kansas; Henry of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Mrs. May Morris of Winfield, Kansas, and one daughter who died in infancy.

He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, seven children, three step-children and sixteen grandchildren.

He was a faithful husband and a kind loving father, and was loved by all who knew him.

The funeral services were held Tuesday, August 27, at 2 o'clock at the Congregational church in Longton, conducted by Rev. Newton Hill, of Elk Falls, assisted by Rev. E. K. Resler.  The music was furnished by Mrs. Sabre Clark, Mrs. F. K. Day, Miss Selma Anderson, Chas Hainlin and H. E. Brighton.

The active pall bearers were: Al Frailey, Huse Shouse, Joe Lanning, Jim Davis, Walter Reeves, and George McCullough.  Honorary pall bearers were: Sam McDonald, Geo. McCullough (?), E. Schroeder, Mr. McHenry, Mr. Dobbs, Mr. Shouse, Mr. Wm. Colvin and Mr. Morris.
