Joseph Schneider was born in Germany, June 24, 1833.  He came to this country as a young man.  At the outbreak of the civil war, he responded to President Lincoln's first call and enlisted as a private April 19th, 1861, in Company C, of the 9th Ohio regiment.  He was in service a little more than four years, being honorably discharged June 16th, 1865.

He came to Kansas in 1874, locating in Elk county, near Howard.  In 1877 he was married to Miss Melinda Fisher, who died March 16th, 1879.

He died July 16, 1911 at about noon.  The funeral service was held in his home, conducted by J. E. Deggendorf, pastor of the Presbyterian church at two o'clock, July 17th.  The remains wre interred in Grace Lawn cemetery with military honors by the E.M. Stanton Post, G. A. R.
