Clarence Monroe Carter passed away Wednesday, January 14, 2015.  He was born on a farm near Hewins, Kansas on July 21, 1929 to Artie and Bernice (Burns) Carter.

He started selling insurance for Farm Bureau in 1961 and then opened Double-C Agency  on September 1, 1969, eventually opening offices in Moline, Grenola, Sedan, and Severy.  He was a driver for the first ambulance in Elk County and continued to serve as a first responder and volunteer fireman.  He loved to hunt, fish, garden, trade cars, water ski, and even tried his hand at raising worms.

Clarence was very active.  He was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force, Past District Governor of the Lions Club, Past President of the North Central District Square Dance Association, and member of the Promenade Club in Independence, Kansas.  He also served as Past Worshipful Master of the Masons and a lifetime member of Hope Lodge, Past Worthy Patron of LaDonia Chapter #243 Oder of Eastern Star of which he as a 25 year member, and Past Grand Chaplin of the Eastern Star of Kansas.  He was also a lifetime member of VFW Post 1186 in Independence.  He was an active member of the Community Fellowship in Moline and a 50 year member of Ferguson-Spease Post 388 American Legion.  When not doing services for the community, Clarence had traveled to every state in the United States and also Canada, Mexico, Japan, and South Korea.

Clarence is survived by his wife, Connie, of the home; two daughters, Sharle Watkins and Pamela Fickle and her husband, Lynn; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Artie and Bernice Carter and his sister, Edith Scheurman.

Graveside services will be held Monday, January 19, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at the Moline City Cemetery.  Visitation will be Sunday, January 18, 2015 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Countryside Funeral Home in Howard, Kansas.  Memorials have been suggested to either the LaDonia Chapter 243 or the Ferguson-Spease American Legion Post 388 and can be left with or mailed to the funeral home.  Services have been entrusted to Countryside Funeral Home, 206 E. Washington, Howard, Kansas 67349.
