Phyllis Nadine Hawkins, age 88, a resident of rural Grenola, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at the Howard Twilight Manor in Howard, Kansas.  She was born in Grenola on March 11, 1926, the daughter of Ralph and Bessie (Storms) McAlister.

After graduating high school, Phyllis completed cosmetology school and worked as a beautician for a time.  On March 23, 1948, she was united in marriage to Howard Abbott Hawkins at the Methodist parsonage in Moline, Kansas.  Phyllis would work side by side with Howard on the farm that they owned in the Belknap area of Chautauqua County until his death in 2002.

For many years, Phyllis attended the Belknap Community Church.  She enjoyed making quilts for all of her children and grandchildren.  She also enjoyed sewing, playing "circle the word" games, fishing, and watching her television shows - Big Joel's Polka, Cowboy Church, and rodeos on RFD-TV.

Phyllis is survived by her sons, Howard R. Hawkins of Grenola, Kansas, Bert L. Hawkins of Sedan, Kansas, and Fred E. Hawkins of Stephenville, Texas; her daughters, Rita J. Hebb of Howard, Kansas and Doris L. Bracken of Cedar Vale, Kansas; her sisters, Mary Ann Osborn, Karen Hey, Helen Yocham, and Wanda McAlister; 12 grandchildren, Howard Andrew "Andy" Hawkins, Guy Wayne Bracken, Barry James Hebb, Curtis Max Hawkins, Cody Ross Bracken, Bayle Joe Hebb, Fred Emory "Buddy" Hawkins II, Joshua Daniel Hawkins, Lana Louise Hawkins Williams, Abby Jo Hawkins, Charity Sue Hawkins, and Grace Noel Hawkins; great-grandsons, Levi Lowe, Garrett Everett, and Breken Hebb; and great-granddaughters, Ava Hebb, Lexington Williams, Emery Hebb, Aralynn Hawkins, Fallon Bracken, and Olivia Bracken.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard; brothers, Darrell, Wilson, and Melvin McAlister; and sister, Darlene Stephenson.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Countryside Funeral Home in Howard, Kansas.  Interment will follow at Belknap Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to the Belknap Community Building Fund and may be left with the funeral home.  Online condolences may be left at www.countrysidefh.com.
