Nathan D. Vestal, Jr., age 91, of Independence, Kansas and formerly of Longton, Kansas, died Sunday, July 13, 2014 at Medicalodge in Independence, Kansas.  Nathan was born on March 17, 1923 n rural Longton, Kansas, the son of Nathan D. Sr. and Iza (Howell) Vestal.

After school, Nathan served in the United States Army. On August 1, 1951 in Elk City, Kansas, he married Pauline Simmons.  Nathan and Pauline were married for 62 years, and she survives at their home.  Nathan and Pauline worked on their farm raising cattle.  He also worked for Union Gas Company.  After retirement, they moved to the Fredonia, Kansas area for a few years, followed by a move to Independence, Kansas.  Nathan worked hard most of his life.  He enjoyed raising cattle.  In his spare time, he enjoyed working in the garden and hunting.

Nathan is survived by his wife, Pauline, and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Chester, Floyd, Bufford, Loren, and Virgil Vestal; and one sister, Velma Wicker.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence, Kansas with Pastor Robin Haines officiating.  Visitation will be Tuesday, July 15, 2014 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Countryside Funeral Home in Fredonia, Kansas.  Online condolences may be left at www.countrysidefh.com.  Memorials have been suggested to the Shriner's Hospital and may be left with or mailed to the funeral home.  Services have been entrusted to the Countryside Funeral Home, 420 S. 20th Street, Fredonia, Kansas 66736.
