James C. "Jim" Futhey, age 82, a resident of Grenola, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2013 in his home after a short battle with cancer.  He was born in Ponca City, Oklahoma on September 7, 1930, the son of Henry Clay and Irma Jean (McKelvey) Futhey.

Jim graduated from Ponca City High School in 1948 and shortly after moved to Grenola, Kansas.  He was drafted into the U.S. Army in November of 1951 and served until being honorably discharged in August of 1953.  On August 9, 1953, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Louise Sweet at the Christian Church in Grenola, Kansas. 

Jim worked for Boeing from August of 1952 until July of 1988.  During that time, the couple moved to Pennsylvania in 1963, returning to Grenola in 1971.  Jim enjoyed a good Western book, hunting, fishing, golfing, bowling, camping, and being a local cowboy.  He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, served on the board of Greenfield Townships, and was the Chief of the Grenola Volunteer Fire Department.  He was known as the type of man that you could depend on. 

Jim is survived by his wife of over 59 years, Evelyn; son, Rob and wife, Lori Futhey of Grenola, Kansas; sister, Judy Petkoff of Odessa, Missouri; grandchildren, Wyatt Knapp of Winfield, Kansas, Elizabeth Johnson and husband, Stephen of Winfield, Kansas; Cristen Bahr and husband, Lyal of Grenola, Kansas, and Nicki Llamas and husband, Matt of Arkansas City, Kansas; and four great-grandchildren, Andrea Johnson, Devon Johnson, Nathan Bahr, and Kelsey Llamas.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Connie Sue Knapp.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at the Grenola Christian Church in Grenola, Kansas with Pastor Wallace Wartick officiating.  Family suggests contributions be made to the Grenola Volunteer Fire Department or the Greenfield Township and may be left with the funeral home.  Online condolences may be left for the family at www.countrysidefh.com.  Arrangements are under the direction of Countryside-Zimmerman Funeral Home, 206 E.
