Kansas, sumner county and the surrounding area will find out the casino route is a big mistake. There will be a lot of hungry children come out of this. They don't build casinos on what the people win there.

I find your parallarism of Casinos and hungry children highly distracting and quite not in the same ballpark.  But hey, ELK, twist all you want on your own values.

I disagree.  Those that don't gamble won't.  Those that do, will.
The children were hungry before the Casino was ever thought of.

In reply to the other discussion of management regarding the county and it's budget:
Elk County can't support a Casino based on the geographical area and population.
That being said, I truly believe a closer look needs to be taken at the line-by-line of Elk County's budget.
Budget is twitchy in meeting the needs of the county.  Look at the Roads, look at the infrastructure..

In another county, it's Mill levy was not raised due to cutting Road and Bridge and Appraiser staff.

Good luck getting State Statutes met!  But hey!, the Mill levy was not raised..............

You might want to check out the Sumner County budget by department, rather than by line item account.
Economic Development $99688 for 2011, 2012, and 2013.

My mistake.  Thanks for the info.

There's no good reason to have State sponsored gambling for those who do gamble.  We should not be obligated to provide them with
State entertainment or anything else for that matter.  How does that encourage honest government?

And we're not out to build a bigger government - are we?  Unless we want the government to have access to more more money
to expand socialism and aid to the corporates.

We ought to be defending our liberty instead of supporting more government benefits for socialistic lifestyles.

Go have your own private poker game.

Did I miss somethig?
Did I miss Beggar-Thy-Neighbor, Welfare Property Tax Rebates mentioned in this conversation?
Were the less fortunate asked to let them slide on paying their fair share of Property Taxes?

Just asking?

The casinos here are associated with the  Dover Downs Monster Mile car races and The Delaware Park Horse Racing Park. The State gets a share of the profits, which helps keep our taxes down. Couldn't that happen there also?

Honest, line by line review...Bingo!  A review of sourcing & pricing of purchases might help too.  When making routine purchases, it might help to remember that the government buyer has 2 responsibilities:  1) Purchase what's really needed (as opposed to wanted), and; 2) Source it with a stewardship mindset that recognizes the money belongs to the people, not the employee making the purchase... actually work at finding the best price.

Too often I've heard county employees refer to 'my/our money', as if it was theirs to do with as they please with no regard to the source of those funds.  That attitude seems to permeate government at all levels.

Of course, zero based budgeting has the effect of motivating wasteful spending as well.

Very interesting. If I remember correctly, several years ago we were all chatting about ways to boost Elk County's tourist appeal and someone did suggest a Casino, but that idea never went anywhere.

Probably because casinos bring in organized crime.
