We always had a big cigar box, or two, full of crayon nubs that were fun to use too. When we got older sometimes we would melt some into paraffin to make candles. In my classroom I always kept a big tub of nubs too. Nobody had to worry about one of the unusual colors, I had them all. I always dumped a couple of the new big boxes in on the first day of school. I was also able to get wallpaper books for my classroom. The kids made book covers and art projects. I also was able to get carpet squares for the kids to sit on when on the floor. They helped identify the child's own space so they were not too close to each other or too far apart.
Useful for other projects too.
