Thirteen million lessons on political torpedoes from Tom Clancy's Captain Tupolev.

"You arrogant ass! You've killed US!"

The line comes from an enraged Soviet Navy officer to his superior, Captain Tupolev, in the film version of Tom Clancy's thriller The Hunt for Red October. Clancy fans will remember Tupolev as the Soviet submariner tasked with destroying the Russian super-sub Red October, captained by Tupolev's old teacher, the defecting Marko Ramius (Sean Connery). Egotistical, obsessed with getting Ramius, in the heat of battle the not very bright Tupolev impulsively launches a torpedo against the advice of his senior officer. Too late he realizes the torpedo has been led back to a target other than the Red October. At the very last moment he understands the horrible truth as his senior officer screams the line above seconds before Tupolev's sub is destroyed -- by the torpedo launched with Tupolev's own hand.

Barack Obama is now in the process of being Tupoleved by the American Left. More amusingly, the American Left is in the process of being Tupoleved by the American Left. The torpedo? Two simple words repeated ad nauseam now for years. The words?

Bush lied.
This is the driving narrative of the Bush administration as portrayed by the likes of the Huffington Post, the Daily Kos, MoveOn.org and the rest of the perpetually outraged members of the Angry Left. An intelligence mistake in the Bush era like those missing WMD's? Bush lied! Changes of position by the administration? Bush lied! Bush and company, we are repeatedly informed, simply tell flat out lies. Big lies, small lies, medium-sized lies. These lies are told deliberately, from dawn to dusk 24/7 with the malice aforethought of cold-blooded liars possessing vastly ill intentions towards truth, justice and, well, all that stuff (they don't really like to speak of The American Way over on that side).

Talk about the law of unintended consequences. The twist here is so delicious it almost deserves a Clancy thriller of its own.

THE PROBLEM THE ANGRY LEFT has brought Tupolev-style both to the door step of Barack Obama as well as to its own is that having emphatically laid down the rules in the body politic as to what constitutes a lie it is suddenly finding the same rules are now being applied not only to their candidate but to themselves as well.

Let's start with Obama.

On issue after issue, whether confessing to a mistake or tailoring his latest position for political effect ("moving to the center" is what they call this in political lingo), Obama's words are now increasingly being received as bald untruths. His image is turning into that of presidential candidate as Pinocchio, the would-be president as habitual liar. Simply googling "Obama Lies" produces thirteen million references on the subject -- thirteen million! -- as opposed to just over a million references to "Bush Lies" and three million for "Bill Clinton Lies." Type in "McCain Lies" and you find a meager 213,000 entries. Among the Obama thirteen million are "Obama's Fifty Lies" and "More Obama Lies the Media Will Ignore" while You Tube features a video clip called "Barack Obama Lies to America." Others are busy cataloguing Obama statements as "bigger" or "demonstrable" lies, with an entire site devoted to Obama's "laundry list of lies."

Presented as examples of Obama's blatant lying are everything from his descriptions of his personal relationships to his political positions. This includes his statements on his relationships with convicted felon Tony Rezko (something Obama called "a boneheaded mistake"), his controversial pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright (a 20-year relationship which he has now disavowed) and his political supporter and fellow Woods Foundation board member, the Weather Underground terrorist William Ayers (Obama dismissed this relationship as "flimsy"). The portrait of Obama as liar also zeroes in on his every twist and turn in his political positions. This includes but is decidedly not limited to his sudden reversals on issues as varied as campaign finance reform, single payer health care, vouchers for District of Columbia school kids, Iraq, Israel, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), welfare reform, NAFTA and the building of a fence along the Mexican-U.S. border.

With liberals having laid out very bright markers as to what constitutes a "lie" by the Bush administration -- mistakes, outright changes of position or anything that can remotely be interpreted as misleading -- it should be no surprise then that Obama's mistakes, sudden and/or repeated flip-flops, or misleading statements on issues are not taken, as they were with Senator John Kerry in the 2004 race, as a sign of indecisiveness or weakness. This time around, with the left's "Bush lied" mantra beaten into the public consciousness, what Obama presents as mistakes or as a "refining" of his positions are being seen as outright lies.

PERHAPS MOST AMUSINGLY he is seemingly being held to these standards not just by his opponents. His creators and idolaters over there on the Angry Left profess to being shocked -- shocked! -- with his new political positions as well. Or so they say. Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitas says, "There is a line between 'moving to the center' and stabbing your allies in the back," a polite version of calling his creation a liar. Arianna Huffington was so alarmed she wrote a Huffington Post "Memo to Obama" imploring him not to shift positions because to do so was to make "a very serious mistake" not to mention a "losing strategy." She stopped just short of using the "L" word. Over there at the Talking Points Memo the buzz phrase is "supporter discontent." Others on the left are now sneering that Obama "is just another politician" or that he is "betraying his base" by "caving in to Republicans." These too are barely polite ways of making an accusation their hero has lied to them.

Two things:
First, what is most striking in watching the "Obama lies" image take off is the left's inability to learn from their own history of the last several decades. This is not the first time they have launched a Tupolev. Carried away with a zealous lust to "get" this or that opponent, they consistently launched torpedoes that sooner or later honed in on their own leaders. Repeatedly deploying special prosecutors against both the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations, they were stunned and embittered to see Republicans successfully use the tactic Democrats had made so acceptable -- against the Clinton administration. In 1991's drive to smear Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas and deny him a seat on the Court, they launched a torpedo labeled "women tell the truth" when it came to claims of sexual harassment. A mere seven years later they were staggered to realize that their torpedo, freshly re-labeled "Paula Jones," almost sank the USS Clinton completely with an assist from another torpedo launched way back in the get-Nixon era: a special prosecutor-induced impeachment.

Second. The lethal nature of all this to Obama's credibility ironically poses the real twist in this story. Because it isn't just his credibility that's at stake. A refusal to distance themselves from Obama as he mysteriously becomes a FISA supporter or a NAFTA cheerleader or when, as he did just the other day, disavows MoveOn.org and says he is "refining" his anti-Iraq war policy leaves his allies who brought him to this presidential nominating dance with a serious credibility problem of their own. Do all these Obama mistakes, refining of positions, and outright changes mean all these Obama-boosters got him wrong? Did they trust a guy who turns out to be not the restorer of Camelot but just another lying Chicago pol? Did they tell the rest of us something that wasn't true? In other words, to put it in the blunt terms they like to use, did Barack Obama lie to them? Or did they lie to the rest of us? And are they continuing to do so?

IS IT JUST Obama who lies? Or are we watching a scenario unfold that tells us Huffington Lies, Moulitas Lies, MoveOn Lies and that their empires are now devoted to lying a man they know to be a liar into the White House?

Having set out with not inconsiderable success to torpedo the Bush Administration by getting the public used to the idea that every word Bush utters is a deliberate, willful lie, the American Left is discovering too late that they have launched yet another Tupolev torpedo. This Tupolev torpedo is now hurtling straight towards the heart of Barack Obama's credibility. Not to mention the credibility of the American Left itself.

"Obama lies" outvotes "Bush lies" thirteen million to one million on the Internet. There's an election result you won't hear much about in the media. The "arrogant asses" are killing themselves. And that's no lie.

Can you say "BOOM!"?

Below are just a few of the many, many lies this clown prince has thrown at the American People!:

The Obama Record
The Obama Record: The most frightening aspect of this president may not be his radical ideology but his rank dishonesty in selling that ideology. Now he's been caught lying about family racism.

In "Dreams from My Father," his 1995 memoir, Obama used the story of his paternal grandfather's imprisonment and torture at the hands of British colonists in Kenya as an example of white cruelty. He claimed Hussein Onyango Obama was unjustly detained for six months before being released a crippled, lice-ridden "old man."

In fact, none of it is true, according to Washington Post editor and biographer David Maraniss, who traveled to Kenya to investigate the tale. His grandfather was not detained or beaten by his "white rulers," as Obama, writing as a 34-year-old lawyer, claimed.

This is only the latest example of a growing body of fabrications, embellishments and outright lies told by this president, who has a real and possibly pathological problem with the truth.

Stacked up, his whoppers would make even Bill Clinton blush. Here's a sampling:

Lie No. 1: Obama has repeatedly claimed his white grandfather, Stanley Dunham, "fought in Patton's army," when he was a clerk with no combat in WWII.

Lie No. 2: Obama claimed Dunham, a communist sympathizer, signed up for duty "the day after Pearl Harbor," when in fact he waited six months.

Lie No. 3: Obama claimed his father "fought when he got back to Kenya against tribalism and nepotism, but ultimately was blackballed from the government," when in fact he fought against capitalism and lost his job when he advocated communism.

Lie No. 4: Obama has claimed his late mother's health insurer refused "to pay for her treatment" for cancer while citing a "pre-existing condition," when Cigna paid all her hospital bills and never denied payment.

Lie No. 5: Obama claimed he and a black high school friend named "Ray" were ostracized in Honolulu, when in fact the friend, Keith Kakugawa, was half-Japanese, and neither of them experienced discrimination.

Lie No. 6: Obama claimed the father of his Indonesian stepfather was killed by Dutch soldiers while fighting for Indonesian independence, when in fact the story turns out to be "a concocted myth in almost all respects," Maraniss found.

Lie No. 7: Obama claimed his parents decided to marry in the excitement of the Selma civil-rights march of 1965 — and that he personally has "a claim on Selma" — when in fact they were married several years earlier.

Lie No. 8: Obama claimed his father got to study in the U.S. thanks to JFK's efforts to bring "young Africans over to America," when in fact the Kenyan airlift his father participated in occurred in 1959 under Ike.

Lie No. 9: Obama submitted a phony bio to his book publicist claiming he was "born in Kenya."

Lie No. 10: Obama denied being a member of the socialist New Party, when a member roster of the Chicago chapter of the party lists him joining on Jan. 11, 1996.

Lie No. 11: Obama claimed he had only a passing acquaintance with Weather Underground terrorists Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, when in fact they held a fundraiser for their Hyde Park neighbor in their living room, and years later, while Obama served in the U.S. Senate, hosted a barbecue for him in their backyard.

Lie No. 12: Obama claimed he never heard Rev. Jeremiah Wright spew anti-American invectives while sitting in his pews for 20 years, when in fact Obama was moved to tears hearing Wright condemn "white folks" and the U.S. for bombing other countries and even named his second book after the sermon.

Lie No. 13: Obama claimed he got in a "big fight" with old white flame Genevieve Cook, who after seeing a black play asked "why black people were so angry all the time," when in fact she never saw the play nor made the remark.

In both his autobiographies, Obama paints a false portrait of a still-racist America and West, where he, his friends and relatives are victimized by that racism. Conveniently, his remedy is redistributive justice through bigger government.

It's hard to think of a president that has been more of an Epic Failure than President Obama. Even Carter is glad this guy came along, so at least he knows he is no longer the worst president ever. Here is just a short list of Obama's Failures:

*Hawaii is in Asia
*Passing on the keystone pipeline.
*Touts a Green Energy Company as exemplary that fails a year later.
*Using the Gulf Oil Spill to promote Green Energy – instead of cleaning it up.
*Thinking the Tea Party is a passing fad – or that they are racists.
*Pulling out of Iraq with no clear victory over insurgent forces.
*Trying to re-write history through speeches – with inaccurate information (i.e. Statue of Liberty)
*Getting a Nobel Prize for being the most ineffective President in the history of the United States, though some say it was for his pigment.
*Putting all legislation on the Internet for five days before it comes to a vote.
*Returning the bust of Churchill to the Brits.
*Giving a collection of DVDs to the British PM.
*Denying the notion of American Exceptionalism.
*Promising to close Gitmo — failing to do so.
*Securing the Olympics for Chicago in 2016.
*Naming numerous Communists/Socialists/Progressives to his various Czar positions and then watching them scurry for cover when Beck begins to call them out, forcing them to resign.
*Government races for NJ, VA and the Senate Seat in Mass.
*The midterm elections, which Obama himself called a shellacking.
*Prediction that stimulus would ensure that unemployment doesn't exceed 8%.
*Bowing to just about everybody.
*Proposing amnesty for illegal aliens to increase the population of voters for Democrat elections.
*He said, I have visited 57 states. Now there is just 1 left to visit.
*Obama to Medvedev...give me space I will have more flexibility after my election.

Obama's Truthiness
By Jonah Goldberg
6/22/2012

It's becoming increasingly clear that President Obama is not burdened with too heavy a commitment to honesty.

This is hardly a shock about any politician, but revelations of dishonesty hurt some more than others. Announce that Bill Clinton has been speaking falsely, and it hits the ears with as much force as the news that birds fly, fish swim and dogs lick their own nether regions.

But Obama was supposed to be different. He was a "lightworker," an ocean tamer and cynicism slayer. In short, he was supposed to be too good to be true -- and it turns out he was.

That's one obvious conclusion to be drawn from the all-too-delayed vetting of the president's biography, most notably in David Maraniss' aptly titled new book, "Barack Obama: The Story," but also at news outlets such as National Review Online and Big Journalism.

Obama has been less than honest about many things. Some of his biggest distortions should be the subject of sustained soul searching on the part of the media. For instance, as New York Times reporter Janny Scott first reported over a year ago, Obama lied about his cancer-stricken mother being denied coverage for her pre-existing condition. Yes, he was close to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and former terrorist Bill Ayers. Yes, he was a member of the socialist New Party (as my National Review colleague Stanley Kurtz has documented).

In the spirit of charity, some of the lies can be chalked up, at least in part, to fanciful family narratives. Obama claims his maternal grandfather fought in Patton's army and liberated Nazi death camps. He says his paternal grandfather was tortured by the British imperialists in Kenya. He's claimed his Indonesian stepgrandfather was killed by the Dutch while fighting for independence. None of that is true.

What I find more interesting are the lies Obama tells not so much about himself, but about society. In "Dreams from My Father," Obama tells readers that he struggled with racism and racial alienation all his life. He wasn't a starter on his high school basketball team because he played "black" while his coach coached "white." He confabulated a black friend in high school who, like himself, was shunned for racial reasons. He wrote of a "big fight" with a white ex-girlfriend who, after seeing a racially charged play, "started talking about why black people were so angry all the time."

As Maraniss methodically shows, these and other tales of racial woe were false. His coach didn't start him because he wasn't good enough to start. His friend in high school was half-Japanese, not black, and neither of them were racially ostracized. The girlfriend, Genevieve Cook, never saw the play and never said anything of the sort. And so on.

The Barack Obama who wrote "Dreams From My Father" probably never dreamed of becoming president of the United States. That man was a product of campus culture -- at Harvard, Columbia and the University of Chicago -- and his vignettes of racial struggle were in some respects the coin of his realm. Later, when he entered the national political scene, he discovered this currency was accepted by much of the mainstream media as well.

No doubt Obama experienced racial animosity in his life, but not enough to fill a memoir with true examples. No doubt life had been unfair to him, but not so unfair as to keep him from Harvard, the Senate or the White House. He has lived a charmed life in almost every regard, but the truth is not as compelling as the legend.

The lies, the self-made myths and the whole gestalt of the Obama story as told by Obama and his fans boil down to a man who has struggled with adversity and proven himself better than the society that spawned him. In effect, we don't deserve Barack Obama. Perhaps this helps explain why Michelle Obama once said that the impending nomination of her husband was the first time in her adult life she was proud of America.

One pattern holds from beginning to end of the tale: When things go wrong for the young Barack, the truth must be bent to show that it's somebody else's fault. Young Barry Obama had the right stuff as a basketball player but was denied by the smallness of his coach's vision. Older Barack Obama, likewise, has the right stuff, but voters, or the Republicans, or maybe the Europeans, are too small to recognize his greatness. The truth of the matter has nothing to do with it.

More Lies From Obuma:

http://www.stoptheaclu.com/2008/03/30/more-obama-lies-the-media-will-ignore/

Is it just me? Or does anyone else hear the "change" in his voice? he sounds like a preacher..he does not talk like this when he has an address? Who is this man? He is a phony...Does he feel that if he talks this way he somehow appeals to the black voters? And DAMN he is narcissistic!

Who is the real Obama? Please stand up...

When Mitt Romney stated that he saw his father march with Martin Luther King Jr., there was wall to wall media coverage reporting how he had to start backpeddaling. Even after witnesses came forward claiming they had seen his father march with him, the media story of Mitt fabricating the story still persists.

Will Obama get the same media treatment with his lies? Don't hold your breath. In a speech to a Selma, Alabama crowd meant to pump up his civil-rights movement authenticity and his Kennedy Camelot image, Barack Obama claimed that the Kennedy administration paid for his Kenyan father to travel to America on a student scholarship and therefore was responsible for his "very existence".

However, the first march on Selma took place on March 7, 1965. Obama would have been about three and half years old at that time. For some reason the media never did the math on this.
