Stella Dallas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Dallas, was born at Auburn, Kansas, December 18, 1886.  Her mother died when she was two years old, she then went to Topeka to live with her grandmother.

She united with the North Topeka Baptist church when she was sixteen years of age.  She was educated in the Topeka schools, and the University of Kansas, with post-graduated work in Chicago university.  After she began teaching, she made her home with her sister, Mrs. F. M. Jones of Howard.

She was married on January 4, 1923, to Dr. R. V. Hays.  To this union were born two children, Maurita, aged 7, and Edward Dallas, aged 2.  In 1925, they moved from Arkansas City to Altoona, where they have since made their home.

Mrs. Hays passed away at 2:45 Friday morning June 17, 1932 after an illness of six weeks.  She is survived by her husband and the two children, a sister, Mrs. F. M. Jones of Howard; a brother, Eli Dallas of Redding, California, and other relatives.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. K. Ressler of the Methodist church in Altoona on June 19th.  Interment was in Grace Lawn cemetery at Howard.  Rev. J. W. Bayles pastor of the Baptist church of HOward, who was pastor at Auburn, Kansas, where they family had resided in her girlhood days, spoke briefly at the cemetery and assisted in the services at the grave.  For a number of years Mrs. Hays lived in Howard at the home of her sister, Mrs. Frank Jones.  During this time she was a very active member of the Baptist church.  Many of her friends were in attendance at the cemetery.  The mixed quartet from the Baptist church, Mrs. Rose Cochran, Mrs. A. K. Rader, B. A. Eby, and Wm. Barackman, Sr. sang the beautiful "Abide With Me."
