In other, less important, news drought conditions persist over most of the southern plains. Cattle & crop shortages expected in months to come, unemployment remains high, world economy in shambles, inflation looms on the horizon and there are drug shortages at medical facilities across the nation.

But please, don't worry about these things, they are relatively minor compared to the closure of Atlantic City casinos.

President Obummer will be meeting with top officials later today (Sunday) to discuss the federal govt response to Irene.

Oh, Mr Prez, what about our economy and the mess that your admin continues to stir in that arena? How was your vacation?

Patriot, if you don't think Irene hasn't had and will have an economic impact, you are much more ignorant of economics than I thought.Those NJ casinos employ thousands and the spin off jobs from food, supplies, truck drivers, buses etc. is huge.The beaches and piers are used too. As far as the news coverage...we can't control that. It's fresh and new and will keep them busy for awhile, but the other problems will still be there to cover when this blows over. Like the pun?

We haven't had a storm actually get here as still a hurricane since Hazel in Oct. 1954. I remember her all too well. Usually, when they get up here, they are strong tropical storms, which are deadly in of themselves.
The wind is still blowing very hard here, but it's not raining. This is a very deadly time. People go out and get crushed by falling trees or kids go out to play in the storm water, get swept away and drown. If the Reb. states are true to their platform, they will not accept any federal disaster relief money and do without. Let's see what they do.

We really are glad you are OK. But, most here are well aware of your oft repeated reminders that the freakin universe revolves around your little house in Delaware and the rest of the Least Coast. We realize that 1 or 2 inches of water in your precious basement could disrupt all of God's creation. If things are so miserable, WTF are you doing wasting precious time here? Attention? Surely there are other locals who could use your expertise and assistance. If 9/11 didn't kill us, a day or three losses of gambling revenues in Atlantic City surely won't.

Just a reminder: in 2010, more than 7 times as many lives were lost in traffic accidents alone in America each and every day as were lost to your vicious tropical storm, Irene. How about just considering your butt very fortunate and moving on. Many others suffer far more every day in this world than you folks have in the last day. Seriously, get a grip!

I'm sorry you don't enjoy casual conversation, but there are those on here who do. Nobody makes you read what I write.
I hardly think the world revolves around my place and there are some who do enjoy hearing about the east coast.
I enjoy hearing about all the activities out there and in the other states that forum members live in. It's a shame you don't.
By the way, my basement is hardly "precious", it's just laundry room, canned goods and shop. 'What am I doing here?" My job was done early this morning. We are an hour ahead of you. Other shifts are handling things, but if called, which I doubt ,I'd be a replacement again. Swift water rescue is for the young ones.
As far as throwing statics at me. Anybody can do that anytime after any incident. So what. I hadn't planned to say much more anyway but maybe now I will, just to annoy you. Funny,I don't remember you being listed as topic critic and boss. Just deal with it.

This thread was originally about the excessive, overbearing and rather boring national news coverage of what hasn't turned out to be the disaster of the century. That still stands, especially since we have you here for first hand updates on at least 2 or 3 threads. Any new deaths in Afghanistan, Iraq, Japan or along the US/Mexico border lately? More info on Iran moving its' nuclear production underground?

News? It's really wet and messy on the east coast. Yes, we heard.

So at 1059 Eastern it was too windy to leave the house and by 1307 Eastern you were done with your (implied) shift? And you've been here that whole time as well?

Wow. Must have been a really short shift. Was the tour of duty in front of your computer at home?
