Just got word from friends in Chautauqua County that Gene Evans passed away yesterday. Gene was a long-time resident of Wauneta, Kansas, and worked as a reserve deputy for several sheriffs in Chautauqua County. That is all I know at this time.

Harold "Gene" Evans, age 81, of rural Wauneta, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at his home.  He was born July 29, 1930 in Grenola, Kansas to Earl and Bernice (Yates) Evans.  

He was raised in Chautauqua County and graduated from Sedan High School in the Class of 1948.  On December 31, 1948, he married Patsy Mattocks.  They made their home in rural Chautauqua County where Gene worked as a mechanic for numerous years and also worked as a reserve for the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement agencies.

He was a member of the Wauneta United Methodist Church.  He loved hunting, fishing, woodworking, and especially loved his motorcycles.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Patsy, of the home; one son, Jerry and wife, Janice Mattocks of St. John, Kansas; one sister, Barbara Allen of Elgin, Kansas; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held Friday, August 19, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Round Mound Cemetery in rural Wauneta, Kansas with Reverend Jerry Bever of the Wauneta United Methodist Church officiating.  The family has suggested memorials to the Wauneta United Methodist Church, and those remembrances can be left in care of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
