Mr. James Washington Howe was born Oct. 15, 1852 in Knox co., Ill.  He came with his parents to Nemaha co., Kansas, where he grew to manhood.  On Feb. 16, 1873 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary K. Jones, also of Nemaha co.  To this union were born ten children, Delbert Howe of Severy, Mrs. Alma Boh of Tacoma, Wash., Evan, of Miller, S. Dak., Isaac L. Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Esley Barr of Severy, James Howe, Jr., of Howard, Kans., Jasper, Grace, Tunis and Allison at home at Howard, Ks.  Mr. Howe died at St. Mary's hospital at Emporia, Kans., where he went for treatment.  His wife, eldest son Delbert and his sister, Mrs. Olive McKee of Topeka were at his bedside when he was called to his reward.  Death resulted form a complication of stomach disorders.  He leaves a wife, ten children and six grandchildren to mourn his loss.  One grandchild, a daughter of James and Annie, died in infancy about two months ago.  The deceased moved to Elk co. about the first of March this year, coming from Pottawatomie co.  The funeral was held at the M. E. Church in Severy, June 5, and was conducted by Rev. Rhodes.  The body was laid to rest near that of his granddaughter in the Twin Grove Cemetery.  A kind and loving father is gone from our home.  Although Mr. Howe had live here but a short time he had made many new friends.  He was a kind husband and father and a good neighbor.
