Douglas Marion Barkley was born near Hazel Dell in Cumberland County, Illinois, October 22, 1860, son of John H. and Mary Ann (Welker) Barkley.  The father, a native of Kentucky, was born January 19, 1836, and died in Kansas City, Missouri, in March 1932.  He was a farmer, who homesteaded in Elk County in March 1880.  The mother was a native of Ohio, who died in Kansas City, Missouri, in November 1910.

John H. Barkley had two brothers, who served in the Union Army, Payton and Martin, from the State of Illinois.  Mary Ann Welker, his wife, had three brothers who served, William, Joseph, and Elijah, all from Illinois.

Douglas Marion Barkley attended country school, Kansas Normal College at Fort Scott, Emporia and Great Bend, Kansas.  For a number of years after leaving school he taught in the public schools of Kansas and later served as county superintendent of Elk County four years.  He has engaged in farming, banking and in the grocery, feed and flour business for a number of years. At the present time the firm name is McKinney and Barkley.

For a number of years Mr. Barkley was a Republican and later helped to organize the Populist party.  He represented Elk County two terms, two regular terms and one special term, in the Kansas state legislature.  At the present time he is independent politically.

On July 17, 1899, he was married to Etna Carpenter at Howard, Kansas.  Mrs. Barkley was born at White Sulphur Springs, Kentucky, December 22, 1872.  Mr. Barkley is a member of the Modern Woodmen and the Security Benefit Association.  He is a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner.  (Photograph in Album).
