Mrs. Ethel Eunice (Wiltfong) (Mowery) Mersereau, 92, of Independence, Kansas, died Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at Regal Estates in Independence.  Ethel Eunice Mersereau was born October 13, 1916 at Oak Valley, Kansas, the daughter of Charles Edward Wiltfong and Laura Ann (Krider) Wiltfong.  She attended Elk County schools.  Mrs. Mersereau worked for a time for Mercy Hospital, and she also worked for Electra Manufacturing and Kansas Army Ammunitions Plant in Parsons.  She volunteered as a driver for the FISH organization.

She was a member of the Grace-Memorial United Methodist Church, the VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries, EHU, AARP, the Garden Club, the Independence Museum, and the FISH organization.  

On June 27, 1933 at Elk City, Kansas, Ethel was united in marriage to William F. Mowery.  Mr. Mowery preceded his wife in death on February 12, 1963.  On April 10, 1976 in Independence, Kansas, she was united in marriage to Mack Mersereau.  Mr. Mersereau died on May 10, 1987.  

Surviving are two sons, Gary Mowery of McKinney, Texas and Lonnie Mowery of Independence, Kansas; 4 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson.  She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, four sisters, and three brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 26, 2008 at the Penwell-Gabel Webb & Rodrick Chapel in Independence, Kansas with the Reverend Gerald Eytcheson, pastor of the Church of the Epiphany, Episcopal, officiating.  Interment will be at the Oak Valley, Kansas Cemetery.  Friends may call at the Penwell-Gabel Webb & Rodrick Chapel from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Friday.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on Friday.

The family has suggested memorial remembrances to  Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, and remembrances will be received at the funeral home.
