Flora Amy Carpenter, daughter of James and Rebecca Carpenter, was born Dec. 25, 1857 at Baldwin City, Kans. and departed this life at 3:15 p.m. on August 18, 1956, at her home in Busby, Kans. at the age of 98 years, 7 months and 24 days.
On May 14, 1874 at Ottawa, Kans., she was united in marriage with Perry Sprague, who preceded her in death on March 31, 1936.  To this union was born five children: Warren Sprague and Jessie McDonald of Busby; Josie Davis, who passed away July 29, 1927; Eunice Dame of Longton and Winifred VanBuskirk of Busby.
She spent her early life in and around Baldwin City, later moving with her husband to Allen County.  Here they gave a home to one nephew and two nieces and his mother, until her death.  One niece, Della Gift of California, survives.
In June 1885, they came to Elk County and located at Busby where she resided until her death.  With her husband she maintained a store and post office for many years.
Flora Sprague was of a quiet and unpretentious disposition.  In her earlier life she took a lively interest in the affairs of the community and united with the church.  At all times she stood for justice and righteousness and her life was one of religious practice in her dealing with her family and fellow man; she was a kind and loving mother devoted to her family.  She led an active life until three years ago.
She leaves to mourn her departure her four children, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one brother, John Carpenter of Baldwin, Kan., and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church on Monday, August 20th with the Rev. Chester Eshbaugh in charge of the service.  Music was furnished by Mrs. Georgia Freeman, Mrs. Marie Howland with Mrs. Neva Morgridge at the piano.  Pallbearers were Ermine Gilbert, Clarence Patterson, Andrew Arnold, Ross Jontra, Earl Kitterman and George Ellis.
