I was saddened to learn from the Flint Hills Express that Janie Crisp had passed away.  Would some of the local Howard friends post details when you find out when her memorial service is scheduled.  She has suffered from numerous health problems for several years, but it is always sad when a former schoolmate and friend is taken.  She has taught school in Colorado for many years and is the daughter of Dennis and Irma Crisp, longtime residents of Howard.  May she rest in peace.

Janie Crisp passed away June 9, 2008.  She was born November 2, 1947 in Wichita, Kansas to Dennis Burton and Irma (Magers) Crisp.

Janie was always happy and grew to be a very intelligent, fun-loving child which carried through to adulthood.  When her older sister started first grade, Suzy brought her reader home every evening and read the lessons to Janie.  Janie was able to read almost everything on the first grade level when she started school two years later.

Janie graduated from Howard High School in 1965,  third in her class. She entered college at KSTC in Emporia, Kansas and worked in the college library through those years. She became qualified to teach English and French.  After seven years of teaching in Kansas, she decided to explore the world.  She resigned her position and explored the possibilities in Colorado.  Through night classes and summer school, she became certified as a librarian.  She was hired as a Basalt High School librarian in 1976 and then transferred to Glenwood Springs High School, retiring in 2005.

Janie was a great singer. She sang for weddings and funerals, in the madrigals group and gospel choir. She played French horn in a brass band and played Mother Superior in Nunsence I & II in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. She loved local talent productions, participated in many, and made great friends along the way.

Janie's retirement days were not as she expected them to be. She had health problems that kept her from traveling and enjoying the world, but she never complained.  She was a member of the Grand Valley United Methodist Church, PEO, and Friends of Cable 12 Television. Her retirement home was in Battlement Mesa.
She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed.

Janie is survived by her parents; brother, Jim (Denise) Crisp of Chula Vista, California; sister Suzy (Jeff) Springer of Topeka, Kansas; nieces Valerie Crisp of Pacific Beach, California, Ashleigh Crisp of Chula Vista, California, and Stacy (Quinten) Bailey of Topeka, Kansas; nephews Scott (Danielle) Crisp of Stevenson Ranch, California, and Mike (Tami) Springer of Collinsville Illinois; six grand-nieces and nephews; and many close friends who became her Colorado family.

A celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2008 at Carbondale Community Methodist Church, 285 S. Second St., Carbondale, Colorado.    In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Mountain Madrigal Singers, c/o Laura Porterfield, 0601 Canyon Creek Drive, Glenwood Springs, Colorado 81601.
