Thelma Irene Howell, age 96, of Sedan, Kansas, passed away January 15, 2017 at Pleasant Valley in Sedan, Kansas.  She was born on May 22, 1920 in Kimball, Nebraska, the daughter of Frank Stephen and Helen Laura (Francisco) McCreary.

On September 26, 1945, Thelma married Herman John Howell in Independence, Kansas.  Herman preceded her in death on January 29, 2011. 

During World War II, Thelma worked as a Rosie the Riveter at an airplane factory.  She had a few other jobs but spent most of her life working in her home and raising a family.  She enjoyed sewing in her younger years.  She also liked reading and working on crossword puzzles.

Thelma is survived by her daughter, Janis Hawk and husband, Charlie of Longton, Kansas and Joyce Miller of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; her brother, Max McCreary of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; 5 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman Howell; a brother, Marion McCreary; a sister, Marie Kirkpatrick; a grandson; and a great-grandson.

The family will hold a memorial service for Thelma at a later date to be determined.  Interment will be held privately at the Longton Cemetery in Longton, Kansas.  Online condolences may be left at www.countrysidefh.com.  Services have been entrusted to Countryside Funeral Home, 206 E. Washington, Howard, Kansas 67349.
