William Robert "Bill" Hughes, age 67, of Independence, Kansas, passed away on Friday, May 13, 2016 at his home after a long battle with cancer.  Bill was born on December 10, 1948 in Liberal, Kansas to Jim and Bette (McGuire) Hughes.

In 1970, Bill married Linda Lynch, and to this union were born two sons.  The couple later divorced.  In 1995, 'Bill married Mamie Heisler.  Bill found employment with City Service right out of high school and retired from Southern Star in 2008.  He loved to go to their home at Grand Lake where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and playing with his "big boy toys".  He was a man that liked to tinker.

Left to honor his memory is his wife, Mamie, of the home; his sons, Jeff of Winfield, Kansas and Mike of Rose Hill, Kansas; his sister, Donna Kay Rogers of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; 5 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; and the love of his life, Sissy II.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Jimmy; and Sissy I.

Honoring his wishes, cremation will take place under the direction of Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory, 306 W. Main, Independence, Kansas 67301.  The family suggests memorials to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, the Cancer Center or AWOL.  They may be left in care of the Chapel.  To leave the family a message of condolence, please visit www.webbrodrickchapel.com

William "Bill" Hughes was married to Mamie Heisler.  Mamie is the daughter of Leland and Winifred Heisler and grew up in Howard, graduating from the Howard schools.
