Opal Wanda Whittaker, age 92, of Severy, Kansas, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2016 at the Golden Living Center in El Dorado, Kansas.  Opal was born August 23, 1923 in Alicia, Arkansas, the daughter of Samuel and Gladys (Burgin) Hunt.

Opal joined the Army in 1941 and served in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps until 1943.  On October 12, 1946, she married Harold Forrest Whittaker in Hoxie, Arkansas.  Opal was a member of the Severy Baptist Church, the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, and 4-H.

Opal is survived by her sons, Sam Whittaker of Wichita, Kansas, Gary Whittaker of Severy, Kansas, and Albert Whittaker of Arizona; daughters, Gladys Sherby of Blaine, Washington and Linda McVicker of Pennsylvania; a brother, Larry Hunt of Black Rock, Arkansas; her sisters, Betty Hawkins of Michigan and Doris Gerritson of Lake Havasu, Arizona; 36 grandchildren; 71 great-grandchildren; and 24 great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; her children, Harold J. Whittaker, Charles Whittaker, Larry Whittaker, Glenda Dye, and two stillborn sons; her sisters, Loretta Doyle, Trevia Dooley, Freida Riggs, and Lowenda Hunt; her brothers, Donald Hunt, D.L. Hunt, and Carnell Hunt; and her grandson, Harold Whittaker III.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 22, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Severy Baptist Church in Severy, Kansas.  Visitation will be held Thursday, April 21, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Countryside Funeral Home, 206 E. Washington, Howard, Kansas 67349.  Family suggests memorials to the family to help with funeral expenses and may be left with the funeral home.  Countryside Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
