Those old fire chutes were common all over. Mom's school in Brown County had several. I remember seeing them.

Yes there was, my Sister Shirley Anne got a big cut down the back of  one of her Legs Sliding down it. On Saturdays Kids would Gather to Slide Down it, if Peggy or Ben Cox caught you they would Make you leave. LarryJ those were the GOOD old Days.
