Robert J. Dowell, age 85 of Longton, Kansas, passed away October 8, 2015 at the Wilson Medical Center in Neodesha, Kansas.  He was born the son of Clarence and Ida Fern (Bush) Dowell in Randolph County, Missouri on January 17, 1930.

After graduating from high school, Robert attended Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa where he earned his Bachelor's degree.  He served his country by joining the United States Navy.  He worked as an Electrical Engineer for Boeing in Wichita, Kansas and farmed at their home in Longton, Kansas.  On June 3, 1951, he married Vivian Mapes in Winterset, Iowa.  Robert loved farming, playing cards, and sitting on the front porch while smoking a cigarette. 

Robert is survived by his wife, Vivian, of the home; sons, Donald James Dowell and wife, Cathleen of Wichita, Kansas, Douglas Brian Dowell and wife, Stephanie of Longton, Kansas, and Mitchell Robert Dowell and wife, Kandy of Longton, Kansas; daughter, Marcia Jean Baughman and husband, Kenton of Lincoln, Nebraska; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Ida; son, David Marshall Dowell; and half-siblings, Frances Farris, Opal Leaton, Dorothy Ball, Shirley Monahan, and Karen Monahan.

Funeral services will be held Monday, October 2, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Elk Valley School in Longton, Kansas.  Visitation will be held Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Elk Valley School.  Family suggests memorials to the Elk Valley School FFA or the Lions Pride Band and may be mailed to the funeral home.
