Alice Opal (Kling) Schwartzkopf, 91, died March 23, 2014 at Dillon Living Center in Hutchinson, Kansas surrounded by her family.  She was born January 29, 1923 to Adam Henry and Marie May (Clark) Kling in Howard, Kansas.

She was a 1941 graduate of Howard High School and a 1944 graduate of Wesley School of Nursing.  She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Hutchinson and a retired Registered Nurse of forty-one years.  On February 24, 1945, she married D. H. Schwartzkopf in Ardmore, Oklahoma. 

Alice was active in Ulysses Order of Eastern Star #471, holding many offices, Wesley Alumni Nurses Association, Business & Professional Women, United Methodist Women, a leader with 4-H sewing, a life member of American Historical Society of Germans from Russia, and American Legion Women's Auxiliary.  She was also a director of nursing at Bob W. Wilson Memorial Hospital and Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses, Kansas and a staff nurse at Stanton County Hospital.  She developed the curriculum for Med Aid course teaching aides how to distribute medication.  During the Polio crisis, she was one of the first student nurses to work with the "Iron Lung" at Wesley Hospital.

She is survived by her husband; children, Tresa Palmer and husband, David of Wichita, Kansas, Larry Schwartzkopf of Burien, Washington, and Cheryl Shackelford and husband, Mike of Hutchinson, Kansas; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Anne Kling; brothers, Loren Kling and wife, Elizabeth and Verne Kling and wife, Gretta; and sister, Marjorie Doyen and husband, Mark.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Harold Kling; her sister, Lavina Harper;  and her brother-in-law, Don Harper.

Cremation has taken place.  A Celebration of Life was held on March 29, 2014 at Elliott Mortuary Chapel in Hutchinson, Kansas with Pastor Jeanine I. Rishel presiding.  Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery at a later date.  Memorial donations may be made to the First United Church and may be sent in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, Kansas 67501.
