Mary Ellen Edwards, age 96, a long time resident of Elk Falls, Kansas, passed away Sunday, January 5, 2014 at the Sedan City Hospital in Sedan, Kansas.  She was born on August 13, 1917 five miles south of Longton, Kansas, the daughter of James Fay and Edna Bird (Dodson) Stilwell.  After the death of her mother, Mary Ellen was raised by her Grandmother  Stilwell.

She was a graduate of Longton High School Class of 1936.  Mary Ellen attended college at Pittsburg State Teachers College, Emporia State, and earned her B.A. from Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas.  She retired in 1979 after 41 years of teaching.  Mary Ellen taught for 9 years in country grade schools, 14 years at Elk Falls, Kansas, and 18 years at Haysville, Kansas.

In 1940, Mary Ellen was united in marriage to Austin Kenneth Edwards in Howard, Kansas, and he preceded her in death.  She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at Countryside Funeral Home, 206 E. Washington, Howard, Kansas with Pastor Robin Haines officiating.  Visitation will be Wednesday, January 8, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to the Elk Falls Senior Center and may be left with the funeral home.  Online condolences may be left at www.countrysidefh.com.  Arrangements are under the direction of Countryside Funeral Home in Howard, Kansas.
