Arthur Donald Simon, age 79, of Independence, Kansas and formerly of Howard, Kansas, died Sunday, February 17, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Independence.  Arthur was born on November 8, 1933 in Buffalo, New York, the son of Ed and Florence (Reynolds) Simon.

After high school, Arthur served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.  He received his AA from Mesa Community College and worked most of his life in construction and as a steel worker.  Arthur was a Christian man.  He loved to read and go fishing when he could.  Most of all, Arthur loved his family.

On February 20, 1965 in Burbank, California, Arthur married Judith I. Helms.  To this union, they had five children.  Arthur and Judy were married for 48 years.

Survivors include his wife, Judy, of the home; his children, David Simon of Moline, Kansas, Brian Simon of Wichita, Kansas, Amy Shaw of Coffeyville, Kansas, Mary Errington of Buffalo, New York, and Scott Thompson of Wichita, Kansas; his siblings, Maryann Kilgore of Winfield, Kansas and Caroline Borzelleri of Buffalo, New York; and 10 grandchildren.  Arthur was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Fritz and Joey Simon; and two sisters, Judy Theon and Jeanette Eliasz.

Cremation has been requested, and the family will hold a private service at a later date.  The family has suggested memorials to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) which may be left with or mailed to the funeral home.  Online condolences may be left at www.countrysidefh.com.  Services have been entrusted to the Countryside-Zimmerman Funeral Home, P.O.
