TYSON FOODS ELIMINATES LABOR DAY IN  FAVOR OF MUSLIM  HOLIDAY

Tyson Food in  Shelbyville , Tennessee has eliminated Labor Day as a paid holiday in favor of the last
day of Ramadan because they have 700 Muslim employees. The fact that they have almost that many
non-Muslim employees is beside the point apparently!

This was verified:

I  did not believe even Snopes, so I checked it out myself:

This story is three years old, and was true for less than two months than a year as the union and Tyson reopened the contract, added Labor Day back and gave the workers a ninth holiday, which was the last day of Ramadan in '08, and then became a flex holiday which could be taken on the workers birthday, a religious holiday or any other day approved by the workers supervisor.

The following response from the link you provided isn't too informative.  Got another?

The link works when I click it.  It links to a repost of a Shelbyville Times-Gazette article from Aug 8, 2008 that I could not find a direct site for.

Here are some excerpts:

"Members of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) and Tyson Foods workers at the poultry processing plant in Shelbyville overwhelmingly voted to overturn a union contract provision that replaced Labor Day as a paid holiday with the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr, it was announced this morning."

"The new agreement will increase the number of paid days off for workers in the current calendar year to include both Labor Day and the Muslim observance as paid holidays for workers in the Shelbyville plant."

I also based my statement on the information at (and links thereon):  http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/tyson.asp

I made an error when I said the story was true for less than two months.  The original contract was approved "last year" meaning sometime in '07, but this did not become a web-frenzied story until some time after that.
