Janet Harrington

Rex V. Tarwater, 85, a resident of Howard, Kansas, died Monday evening at the Twilight Manor Nursing Home in Howard.

He was born January 13, 1890 at rural Howard, Elk County, to Isaac and Narcisse (Hawkins) Tarwater.  He was a life-long resident of that vicinity.

He served in World War I, going into the Tarwater Brothers Insurance business with a brother upon his return.  He was a retired farmer and stockman and also served as City Clerk for Howard for many years.

He married Katheryn Strachan Vinette on May 14, 1932.  She preceded him in death August 5, 1968.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Howard, the American Legion, Hope Masonic Lodge, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Howard Rotary Club.

He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Helen Vinette of Howard, Kansas, who has cared for him the last several years; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at the Spurrier Funeral Home chapel in Howard on Thursday, January 15, 1976 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Roy L. Brown, United Methodist Church, officiating.  Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard with Masonic and American Legion graveside rites.

Two memorials have been established in his name:  one to the Twilight Manor Nursing Home in Howard and one to the Elk Manor in Moline.  Contributions may be left at either of the two banks in Howard or the bank in Moline.
