Clifton Eugene Signer, son of Frank H. and Hazel M. Signer, was born September 18th, 1926 on a farm 13 miles northwest of Howard, Kansas, and departed this life, October 11th, 1976, at the age of 50 years and 23 days, in the St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.

He was married to Mary Miller, June 12th, 1946 at Sedan, Kansas, and to the union was born three sons, Lyle, Staff Sargeant-United States Air Force, Altus, Oklahoma, Dennis and Teddy of Emporia, Kansas.

Gene (as everyone called him) was a person who loved people and was more than willing to go the second mile to help anyone in need, and was always available when needed.

He was a member of the Severy Chamber of Commerce.  He also served on the City Council, Volunteer Fire Department of Severy, and the Greenwood County Rural Fire Department.

Gene enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1946 and served in occupied Japan.

He had worked at various places in Wichita, for a number of years, as well as farmed.  He was also employed by Gladding Del Ray Camper Co., of Fredonia, and by Vancil's Auto Salvage, at Severy, as a truck driver.  He and his wife, Mary owned and operated Mary & Gene's Drive-In, at Severy.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, three sons, (Lyle, Dennis, & Teddy), three grandchildren-(Ryan, Tamara, & Alisha), of Emporia, three daughters-in-law, Mitsako of Altus, Oklahoma, and Linda Sue and ____________________________________________________________________*
two brothers, Frank J. Signer of Moline, and Donald R. Signer, of Howard, his father and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Glen O. Miller, of rural Howard, and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held in  the Chapel of the Spurrier Funeral Home, Howard, Kansas, at 2 p.m., October 14, 1976.  The Reverend Roy L. Brown of the United Methodist Church officiated.

Mrs. Robin Smith, organist, accompanied Mrs. Robert Greenwood and Mrs. Jerry Harrod as they sang, "He Touched Me," and "How Great Thou Art."

Casket bearers were Howard Vancil, Gary Vancil, Harold Mitchell, Bill Harris, Frederick Smith, and Ted Knight.  Honorary bearers were Willie Ervin, Randy Ervin, Rocky Ervin, and Rusty Ervin.

The American Legion Carter-Rader Post #149 conducted military graveside rites and interment was in Grace Lawn Cemetery, Howard, Kansas.

* A few lines were unreadable on the microfilm, efforts were made to locate the obit in the Independence Reporter, so that I could fill in the blank, but apparently the obituary was never put in that paper.
