Wendell Boyd Poovey, 69, of Winfield, Kansas, formerly of Oxford, Kansas, died Sunday, August 22, 2010 at the William Newton Hospital in Winfield, Kansas.  He was born on October 3, 1940 in Santa Monica, California, the son of Boyd and Virginia (DeBaun) Poovey.

After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army.  Wendell served three tours during the Viet Nam War.  Among other ribbons and awards, Wendell received a Purple Heart.  Wendell later traveled and worked for a carnival.  He was their mechanic and ran rides.  He later worked at Wal-Mart in Wellington, Kansas.  Wendell was faithful to his family, taking care of his father for his last 16 years.  He enjoyed motorcycles and traveling.

Survivors include his daughter, Kimberlee Poovey-Barner and husband, Terry of Moline, Kansas; son, Tracy Lee Poovey; sister, Judy Andrest and husband, Bob of Jenks, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Chase Poovey, Chelse Wilcher, and Cody Wade; and 4 great-grandchildren.

Graveside memorial services were held on Friday, August 27, 2010 at 12:30 p.m. at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield, Kansas.
