W. Gray

A member of the Republican Party, no less. One might note, though, that the Republican Party was viewed as the "pro black" party in those days. Today, the Democrat Party has that distinction.

He was Born in Virginia in 1840.

He was a former slave and the first black man elected to either house in the Kansas legislature.

He had a 200 acre farm near Peru.

He served but one two year term and was chairman of the House Committee on Immigration (immigration into Kansas).
