From the Cookson Hardware Store website:
QuoteIn the early 1900's, it was known as the Elk County Store, and was the biggest store in this area of Kansas.  The building  being 258' X 80' was filled to the top with goods for sale which had been hauled in by team and wagon from Chanute to Howard. When the railroad came about, more space was soon needed to accommodate the extra trade, so another room north of the original was added. Shortly after that, it became what most remember as Smith & Goodwin.
