We're both right! I just googled "factory fort" and it has a nice article from Wikipedia.

From Volume I of Kansas: a Cyclopedia of State History, Embracing Events, Institutions, Industries, Counties, Cities, Towns, Prominent Persons, etc.

"...the government erected there a fort and named it Fort Clark. Biddle says a factory was also erected by the government, but does not tell what was manufactured there."

This author was also confused about the federal government fort factory system.

One source says Fort Clark, after being renamed Fort Osage, was replaced by Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Another says it was replaced by Fort Scott, Kansas.

I just realized that I missed Monday night's program concerning the Cherokee.

It might surprise a lot of people but there was another Indian Reservation beside the Osage in what became Howard County, Kansas.

And, it was all because of a mix up in Congress when that body created Kansas Territory.

Those now living in what became Elgin, the town of Chautauqua, and maybe Hewins in Chautauqua County were in the Cherokee Reservation.

Additionally, what became Caney in Montgomery County was also in the same reservation.

Most folks have heard of the Cherokee Strip in Oklahoma. There was also a very narrow Kansas Cherokee Strip.

The Cherokee gave up the Kansas Cherokee Strip to the federal government the year before Seward County became Howard County.
