Walter Eugene "Gene" Street, age 82, a resident of Marion, Kansas and formerly of Howard, Kansas, passed away Monday, November 24, 2008 at the Newman Regional Health Center in Emporia, Kansas.  He was born on August 8, 1926 in rural Howard, the son of Waler and Martha (Frohm) Street.

He was a graduate of Howard High School.  On June 10, 1945, Gene was united in marriage to Nona M. McCormick at the Howard United Methodist Church.  Gene worked as a data process manager for Skelly, Getty, and Texaco refineries in El Dorado, Kansas.  He was a member of Masons Patmos Lodge in El Dorado and then transferred to the Hope Lodge in Howard.  He was also a member of the Midian Shrine in Wichita.  Gene was in the Electric LIght Elite in the shrine.  Gene also spent time as a van driver for the Shriners Hospital taking children from Wichita to St. Louis  He was a member of the VFW in El Dorado, Kansas  Gene loved spending time outdoors working around the yard from one job to another.

Gene is survived by his wife, Nona of Marion, Kansas; one son, Rick Street of Pretty Prairie, Kansas; one daughter, Autumn Hanson and her husand Doug of Marion, Kansas; four grandsons, Dakota Sreet, Travis Sreet, Riley Ross, and Royce Ross; one granddaughter, Roxann Ross; and six great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Jim and Vernon, and one sister Vera Smith.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 29, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard, Kansas.  Visitation will be Friday from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  Interment with Masonic Rites will be at Grace Lawn Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to the Midian Hospital Van Unit or the Alzheimer's Association and may be left in care of the funeral home.  Online condolences may be left at www.countrysidefh.com.  Arrangements are under the direction of Zimmerman Funeral Home, 206 E.
