It might surprise some folks that Kansas is one of the largest states in the Union.

At 82, 282 square miles, it is fifteenth largest.

When it came into the Union on this day in 1861, it was fifth largest.

Kansas became a state seventy-four days before the Civil War began.

If it had come into the Union at its original projected size of 127,000 square miles, it would have been third largest with only Texas and California being larger.

Originally, the north boundary of the state of Kansas was slated to be the Platte River, which runs west to east through southern Nebraska.

The western boundary would have been the continental divide.

In 1873, the last Indian tribe (of many) kicked out of Kansas was the Kanza from whom the state took its name.

"One of the most expensive county-seat wars in terms of time and money lost..." Dr. Homer E Socolofsky, KSU
