Maude Cummings of Elk Falls married Thomas E. Thompson of Howard in late 1882, which was about one year after Asa Thompson, John Thompson, and Thomas E Thompson purchased the Howard Courant.

Evenually, Thomas E. Thompson became sole owner of the Courant and Maude began running a weekly column for women containing information directed at women. Her column always carried the below headline:

                    WRITTEN FOR WOMEN
                      (MEN NOT BARRED)
                              ─────
                        BY HIS WOMAN
                              ─────
GOLDEN RULE: Let every tub stand on
                          its own bottom

"If one of the many corrupt...county-seat contests must be taken by way of illustration, the choice of Howard County, Kansas, is ideal." Dr. Everett Dick, The Sod-House Frontier, 1854-1890.
"One of the most expensive county-seat wars in terms of time and money lost..." Dr. Homer E Socolofsky, KSU
